Sunburns!

It‘s Summer time! We all enjoy those summer cookouts with family and friends, boating out on the lake, lying next to the pool and of course those summer holiday weekends where we spend most of our days outside doing something fun in the sun.  As we enjoy these wonderful things it does come with consequences.  SUNBURNS  Ouch.

Sunburns may seem like a temporary irritation, but they can cause long lasting damage to the skin.  When damage occurs to the skin cells and to the DNA of the skin, some cells are able to repair themselves and the other cells die.  Recurring burning can lead to skin cancers, immune system suppression and premature aging.

To help protect your skin from the UV radiation, slather on sun screen that is water proof and SPF 30 or higher.  No one is perfect and sunburns do happen but there are ways to relive the discomfort you experience with sunburn.

Aloe Vera – Aloe is naturally cooling and contains antioxidants to help reduce skin inflammation.

Calendula (Marigold Plant) – Calendula helps sooth burns and skin inflammation.  Put the petals in water and boil, let it steep and cool down then bathe the skin with it.

Peppermint – The menthol in peppermint is one of the most effective cooling substances that nature offers.  Soak the mint leaves in water to extract the menthol, then dab the liquid on the burn.

Yogurt and milk – The lactose in yogurt and milk helps provide skin hydration. *do not use if you are lactose intolerant*.

Those listed above are just a few remedies to help soothe that painful sunburn.

Sunburns can take a lot out of you. Call your doctor immediately if you are experiencing any chills, nausea, fever, extensive blistering or any other unusual symptoms.  These can be symptoms of sun poisoning or infections.

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:
(From the Kitchen of Lori Anderson)

Grandma C.

Simple, Fresh Summer Salad

Ingredients

  1. 2 cups Diced Bell Pepper, (the small red, yellow and orange variety)

  2. 2 cucumbers, diced

  3. 1 package grape tomatoes, halved

  4. ½ cup Lighthouse brand balsamic vinaigrette dressing

Place diced vegetables in a medium mixing bowl.  Add dressing and toss, then move to a covered container.  Shake lightly and refrigerate for a couple of hours before serving.  That's it!

This salad is easily modified if you like other types of veggies such as zucchini, celery and onion.  You can also add cubed cheese for added flavor, or you can serve it with sliced avocado on top.  It's a very refreshing salad for summer.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I can't get enough of it!

Enjoy!  And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Clayton (TR)

Pool + Water Noodle = Stay Cool Workout!

If you remember my article from May 2014, “Water Work Outs Will Help You Stay Cool and Fit” (you can check it in out in our archives if you missed it), I laid out a pretty good defense for those of us that like a water workout.  I would hope that some of you were able to use a few of the tips that I mentioned to get a good workout and stay cool at the same time.

That brings me to my next topic.  Another wonderful, inexpensive, simple yet valuable piece of equipment… The Water Noodle!

I am sure every one of you have seen this before, but how many of you have ever thought of this as being a workout apparatus?  This lightweight floatation device can help you get one of the best water workouts.
Water Noodle
Here are some workouts you can do with them:

LOWER BODY WORKOUTS:
  1. Chair Kicks:  Put the noodle around your back and under your arms like you are sitting in a chair, and then kick to do laps.

  2. Front Kicks:  Put the noodle around your chest and under your arms, then kick to do laps.

  3. Seated Kicks:  Make the pool noodle into a “U” and sit in it, then kick to do laps
UPPER BODY WORKOUTS:
  1. Back Paddle:  Float on your back with your ankles or knees over the noodle.  Without kicking, just paddle with your arms to do laps.*

  2. Front Paddle:  Float on your stomach with your ankles over the noodle. Without kicking, just paddle with your arms to do laps.*

  3. Seated Paddle:  Make the pool noodle in a “U” and sit in it, then paddle to do laps.
*If you know how to do the backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly or freestyle stroke, then change it up throughout your routine for a better workout.

These are just some of the many workouts that you can do with a pool noodle.  I am sure if you get creative enough you can come up with more.  Whatever you come with, it is a good, fun and cool way to workout and the pool noodles are available at the dollar store!

Until Next Time:  Stay Fit, Stay Strong, Stay Hydrated and Stay COOL

Fun Facts:

Crazy, Zany Facts We Bet You Didn't Know

  • You'll hear the term "The Dog Days of summer" very often, but the real "dog days" refers to the weeks between July 3 and August 11.  They are named after the Dog Star (Sirius) in the constellation of Canis Major.

  • If you want to find out what the temperature is and don't have a thermometer, the frequency of a cricket's chirps fluctuates with the temperature, so if you count a cricket's chirps for 15 seconds and add 37, you will have the approximate outdoor temperature (in Fahrenheit).

  • France's Eiffel Tower grows by more than six inches in summer due to the expansion of the iron on hot days.

  • The higher summer temperatures make July the most popular month for ice cream.  In July, Americans celebrate National Ice Cream Month. U.S. citizens consume about 5.5 gallons per year (on average.)

  • Watermelon is the summer's favorite vegetable.  Yes, vegetable and not a fruit.  It is part of the cucumber, pumpkin, and squash family.  Fruit or veggie, this juicy favorite is 92 percent water and the average American eats 15 pounds of watermelon a year.

  • Seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit is the perfect temperature for pools in the summer time.  Any temperature over 90 degrees Fahrenheit is too hot (except for the girls at savon) and any temperature under 70 Fahrenheit degrees is too cold.

Questions From Our Members

J. Albert of Houston, Tx. asks:  I have the basic plan.  What is the difference between all of the other plans that you offer, ie: Senior Plan, Student Plan, Veterans Plan, etc?

Savon’s Answer

The Basic Plan is the foundation of all our plans.  The only difference between the plans is the cost and length of membership commitment.

School Is Back In Session

Slow Down, School Zone Ahead

Now it seems like just yesterday kids were finishing up school, some for just the year, some possibly for good by graduating.  Well hang on friends…  School is back in session!!

School zone signs are going up all over the country.  Right now it's kind of early but we are actually seeing classes start in various parts of the Phoenix Metro area now.  The police will be out in force just as they are every year and the fines for speeding in a school zone can be stiff.

Here are just a few things to remember when entering a marked school zone:
  • The speed limit is 15 mph UNLESS otherwise posted.

  • No passing means just that!! No Passing!  If you have 2 or 3 lanes going the same direction, IT IS ILLEGAL to pass the first car that enters the school zone.

  • Some school zones (high school for example) run from intersection to intersection and the speed limit is usually 25 mph  Go any faster and you might be meeting a police officer.

  • It is against the law to pass a school bus when it has the stop sign out and and red lights flashing, unless it is on the other side of a divided highway.
The bottom line folks is…  SLOW DOWN IN THE SCHOOL ZONES!!  The life you save may be someone else's kid and the life someone else saves may be your kid!!
