Chilling VS Topical Anesthetic

Ice has been a home remedy for aches and pains for years.  You twist your ankle, you put some ice on it.  You bite your tongue, you put some ice on it.  You have a toothache, you put some ice on it.  You may even remember icing up your ears before getting them pierced.  So, why do they use that foul tasting topical gel before giving you a shot at the dentist?  Well, they may not be anymore…

Studies have shown that the use of a cooling agent (Pain Ease by Gebauer was the noted product) reduced the pain of injections more effectively than standard benzoncaine gel.  Although the company markets this product primarily for IV‘s, minor surgical procedures, and other injections, the FDA did approve it for testing in 2004.

Recently, researchers decided to see how well Pain Ease would work in dental patients.  They took a group of patients and used benzocaine on some, and Pain Ease on the rest.  They had each group rate their level of pain and the results proved Pain Ease more effective.
This product has been proven to be non-toxic.  It works faster than topical ointment and is less messy, however more research needs to be done before you‘ll see it on the shelves at your dentist office.

To your health:

Is a chemical in plastic Harmful?
From an article on drbicuspid.com

Bisphenol A, or BPA as it is better known, is a chemical found in certain plastics used as food and beverage containers, coating on canned goods, as well as certain medical devices.  This chemical is ingested in to the body and has been thought for many years to exit the body quickly and completely through urine.  Recent studies, however, have found that BPA may actually remain in your body longer than it was previously thought.

Researchers tracked the BPA levels in a group of people who had fasted for various periods of time.  While they did see a decline over a length of time, they found that people who fasted for 8 hours had around the same levels as a person who fasted for 24 hours.

Why the worry? BPA is found in products such as baby bottles and formula containers. Toxicologists have expressed a concern that BPA may be harmful to the development of the prostate and brain, and could possibly cause behavioral changes in infants and children.  British researchers also claim that high levels of BPA were linked to heart disease and diabetes.

The FDA plans to do more research on the subject but has no immediate plans to discontinue the chemical.

A question from a member:

Question:  had a root canal done that failed. Does that mean my dentist wasn‘t qualified to do the work?

Savon's Answer:

Root canals, as with most dentistry, are not an exact science. Root canals do fail. This does not necessarily mean that your dentist was not qualified to perform such a procedure. Keep in mind that a root canal is an amputation. If you amputate your finger, your doctor can physically see it. A root canal, on the other hand, is a microscopic work area, and they rely on x-rays to see what they are doing. Dentists are human, mistakes and accidents do happen. For this reason, most dentists have a consent form that you must sign prior to having that kind of work done. The consent forms usually state what is involved in a root canal along with the risks and possible problems that could happen
