Health Benefits Of Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera, sometimes known as the “wonder plant or natural healer” is native to Northern Africa.  Aloe Vera is a short-stemmed succulent plant that can grow to 2-3 feet tall.  The leaves are lanceolate (comes to a point), thick and fleshy, green to grey-green with spikes along the edges.  People say it reminds them of a cactus.

Aloe Vera contains many ingredients which can be grouped into the following categories:  Vitamins, Minerals, Sugars, Enzymes, Lignins, Amino Acids, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Fatty Acids and Salicyclic Acid.  With all these combined together it‘s easy to see why Aloe Vera is known as the healing plant.

Aloe Vera is a popular house plant because it helps heal and soften the skin.  But did you know Aloe Vera has many other health benefits?
Listed below are just some of many ways Aloe Vera is beneficial to your health:
  • Helps fight Heartburn – Consuming 1-3 ounces of aloe gel at mealtimes could reduce the severity of GERD and other digestive problems.

  • Alternative to mouthwash – Aloe Vera extract is a safe and effective alternative to chemical-based mouthwashes.  The healthy dose of vitamin C can block plaque and provides relief to bleeding or swollen gums.

  • Lowers High Cholesterol – When taken internally, Aloe Vera rebalances the blood chemistry in a way that lowers cholesterol and total triglycerides.  To achieve optimal results take 1-2 TB of Aloe Vera juice a day.

  • Helps Prevent bad breath – Drink up to ¼ cup of pure Aloe Vera gel dissolved in a ½ cup of water.  Aloe Vera contains an anti-inflammatory compound called B-sitosterol that soothes acid indigestion, a common cause of bad breath.
As a word of caution, if you want to try Aloe Vera as an alternative to your medications you should always inform your physician first.  You will need to work with them to reduce your prescription.

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:
Recipe from the kitchen of of Dawn Lawler

Grandma C.

SOPA (Mexican Soup)

Ingredients

  1. 1 can Rotel tomatoes (spicy or mild, according to your taste)
  2. 1 large can or 2 small cans El Pato brand salsa fresca
  3. ½ pkg small macaroni shells
  4. 3 tbsp mexican style beef boullion
  5. 1 lb ground beef
  6. 3 cups water

Brown ground beef, drain any grease.  Add Rotel tomatoes and El Pato sauce.  Transfer to a small or medium soup pot.

Meanwhile, in a non-stick skillet, brown the dry macaroni shells.  (yep, the shells!)  Do not use oil!  Simply heat them dry in the skillet on med high heat, turning every minute or so until lightly browned.

Add the shells to the meat mixture.  Add 2-3 cans of water and the mexican style beef boullion.  Stir.   Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Garnish with grated cheese, a dollop of sour cream and sliced scallions.  Serve with warm tortillas.

This is a spicy soup and can be a hearty meal by itself or used as a side dish when you're having tacos or burritos.

Enjoy!  And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Myth Or Fact: Chewing Gum Can Dehydrate You

This is one of those topics that could go either way.  Some will claim It does {dehydrate} and others will claim that it doesn't.  After hours of research on this topic, I am now to a point that I can finally answer the question:  Myth or Fact!

First, let me tell you how this topic came about for me.  I know that over the last 2 years I have written article after article on dehydration and heat related illness.  I have explained what it is, what the symptoms are, how to treat it and more importantly, how to prevent it.

Well, let's just say I failed to follow to my own advice.  On Memorial Day, this year, the Savon Dental Plan staff decided to hit the golf course.  It was a fun day and great round of golf!  The temperature was in the mid 90's here in Arizona.  Well, guess who got mildly dehydrated and came down with a mild case of heat exhaustion?

That's right.  I did.  Needless to say I didn't fully practice what I have been preaching to all of you.  Now, in my defense,I was drinking water, just not enough.  I had a wet towel but that was quickly used to wipe the mud off my golf ball.  So I had all of the tools to keep myself hydrated but was so engrossed in the game that I forgot to use them.

However the one thing that I was doing throughout the game was chewing gum.  I started to wonder if it was the gum that caused me to get dehydrated, which lead to the topic of this article.

Is "Gum Can Dehydrate You” a Myth or a Fact?

Here is what I have found:  Myth - Gum does NOT dehydrate you.  It actually helps reduce the risk of dehydration by increasing your saliva, which keeps your mouth moist.  Swallowing the saliva can slow down dehydration.  **Disclaimer** Gum DOES NOT stop you from becoming dehydrated and should never be used as a replacement for water or fluid intake!

Now, the Fact - I did find that gum can mask the symptoms of dehydration.  When I was chewing gum I rarely became thirsty, so therefore I didn‘t focus on my need for water.  Make sure that you are mindful of your fluid intake!  You still need to be proactive about your hydration regardless of whether or not you are chewing gum.

Until next time: Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong

Dental Insurance VS Your Dental Plan

Here's What The Dental Insurance Companies Don't Want You To Know

Ask Them Why They Think Dental Insurance Is So Great??

Many people are under the misconception that discount dental plans are a "low class" alternative to dental indemnity insurance.  It probably has something to do with the word "Discount".  You may know some people who believe that having their dental work done at a discount means that they are going to receive substandard or discounted care.

Nothing could be further from the truth!!!

The fact of the matter is that dental indemnity insurance is one of the most costly of all types of insurance and it pays the least in benefits.  Dentists accept dental indemnity insurance only because most major companies offer it as a benefit to their employees.  Once the cost of advertising, rejected claims, duplicate X-rays and so on and so forth are added in, dental indemnity insurance is not quite as lucrative for them as it may appear.

If a dentist is any good, why would they honor a discount plan?

First of all…  The credentialing process for a dental discount plan is much the same as it is for insurance companies and in some cases maybe harder.  The biggest reason a dentist will accept a discount plan is Post-Paid Advertising.

Once the dentist is on the plan, the plan advertises for the dental office.  The way the dentist pays for this massive advertising is by agreeing to discount his/her fees to the fees set forth by the plan.  Some plans use a set fee schedule, while others use a sliding scale fee schedule. So, in a nutshell, the dentist joins the plan, members join the plan, dentists get new patients and the patient saves more money than they ever could with dental indemnity insurance.  Rest assured that the only thing that is discounted with a dental plan is the price you pay.  Your quality of care is not affected! The treatment you receive is the same as if you have insurance or are paying in cash.

What Dentists Tell Us Are Problems With Insurance What Dentists Tell Us Are Benefits Of Dental Plans
The time and cost involved in: Hassle free dentistry because:
Verifying eligibilty and benefits (about 15 mins per patient) They pay for advertising ONLY if it works
Processing the claim forms No claim forms to fill out and file
Making sure deductibles and waiting periods are met Membership usually verified by rosters
Making sure the patient's yearly maximum benefits aren't exceeded No worrying about maximum benefits being reached or exceeded
Getting patients to pay what the insurance doesn't No worrying about waiting periods or deductibles
Waiting 30 to 90 days or more for the insurance company to pay them Dentists gets paid faster because they are dealing only with the patient
