To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:

Pet Health

Jourdin
This month I‘m switching things up a little.  I will be talking about pet health.

As much as our health is important to us, so is the health of our fur babies.  The majority of us treat our pets like they are royalty.  Some get homemade gourmet meals, are hand fed, allowed on the furniture and sometimes they even get better medical treatment than we do.  They let us know when it‘s time to play, time to eat, go outside and various other things.  They pretty much live “The life of Riley!”

I know it can be difficult to stay on top of our own health let alone our pets but we all want our pets to live a long, healthy and happy life right beside us.  Am I right?

You can accomplish this goal by using these simple tips that professionals want you to know:
  • Double your vet visits –  Your pet should visit the vet every six months, especially if they are a senior (Small breed: 9-10 years old and large breed: 7-8 years old).  While at the vet also have their teeth checked for any dental problems.

  • Spay and neuter –  Although this cuts down on the homeless animal population, it does have substantial medical benefits such as lowering the risk of cancers and other diseases.

  • Prevent parasites –  Year round prevention of fleas and intestinal parasite control is very important as well has heartworm prevention.

  • Feed them right –  Maintaining a healthy weight is very important.  Research has shown that obese animals life spans are reduced by up two years compared to animals at healthy weight.

  • Enriched environment –  Pets need mental stimulation!  Whether it‘s toys, a walk around the block or a scratching post for your feline, play time keeps their muscles toned and boredom in check.

  • Sooth achy muscles/bones –  If you notice your animal is stiff after relaxing, check their bedding.  If the bedding is becoming hard it‘s time for a new bed.  *If you have a senior animal it might also help if you have them lay on a non-electric heating pad.  Another great way to sooth achy muscles is by giving your pet a massage.  All you need to do is briskly rub large muscle groups with the palm of your hand, then gently lift and squeeze the muscles.  Wrap your fingers around each leg and squeeze gently.  Just remember not to do any of these techniques too hard; this is just a soft/gentle massage.
There are many different types of pet health tips such as seasonal, nutritional, skin care and so on.  What I have provided above are some general overall health tips to keep your fur baby in tip top shape.

Important side note: Many pet owners might not know this buy you can but pet insurance. No matter the size or breed there are coverage options out there for you.

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:

Best Ever Shish Kabobs…  (It‘s all in the marinade!!)

Grandma C.
Ingredients
  1. 1 pkg. Lawry‘s Beef Marinade
  2. ½ c. soy sauce
  3. ½ c. Heinz 57 steak sauce
  4. ½ c brown sugar
  5. 1 TSP prepared yellow mustard
  6. ½ TSP garlic powder
  7. Salt and Pepper to taste
  8. 1½ lbs cubed beef or pork

Prepare the Lawry‘s marinade according to package directions.  Add all other ingredients and stir until well mixed.

Pour into a shallow baking dish.  Add cubed meat (of your choice), stir, cover and marinate in the refrigerator overnight.

At BBQ time, skewer the beef or pork, alternating with your favorite vegetables, (such as onion, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers and even pineapple chunks!) and grill 20 to 30 minutes on medium heat.  Serve!

This mixture goes well with beef or pork or even venison or elk and it is such a simple recipe!  There is very little prep involved.

*Variations include: Pineapple juice.  If using fresh chunked pineapple on the skewers, you can add a few tablespoons of the juice to the marinade for a tropical flavor.  The brown sugar and pineapple juice will complement each other.

Enjoy!  And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Weight Machines vs Free Weights

Clayton (TR)
When you visit the gym there is a wide selection of equipment available for you to use.  So, How do you select which one you will use?

The most common dilemma that you probably have is whether to use free weights or weight machines.  This is a topic that can easily be debated for hours.  Everyone has their own opinion based on their own preference.

Personally, I prefer the weight machines.  My reason is more medically based than preference based.  I had open heart surgery about 18 years ago.  When I go to the gym to work out I generally go alone and most free-weight workouts recommend the use of a spotter.  Since having the surgery, there are points at which I experience a sporadic reduction in upper body power.  The last thing I want is to have that occur when I am lifting a free weight and without a spotter, so I stick to the machines.  If it happens during a weight machine workout, which it has, I can simply let go of the weights and do so without risking injury to myself or others.
For those who are experiencing that constant dilemma, let‘s take a moment and put the two options side by side and see which one wins in each category:
  1. Range of motion:

    • Free weights allow you the freedom to move around and achieve your full range of motion.  This allows your body to move in ways that it was meant to move.

    • The weight machines limit your range of motion to the range that the machine is capable of.  This can cut you short on your workout or force you to use an unnatural motion.

Range of motion advantage: Free Weights

  2. Ease of use:

    • Free weights do not come with an instruction manual, which basically leaves you on your own to figure out the correct way to use them.

    • Weight machines generally have picture tutorials of which exercises can be done and how to do them correctly.

Ease of use advantage: Weight Machines

  3. Specific Area Workouts:

    • Free weights really limit your area-specific workouts due to the excessiveness of having to balance and move while using them.

    • The weight machines, however, are designed to stabilize your body and allow for a more area-specific workout.

Specific area workouts advantage: Weight Machines

  4. Workout Variations:

    • Technically this could be a tie if you count all of the weight machines in the gym, however let‘s look at the machine overall.

With a weight machine you are limited to the variations that the machine allows.  If you want to change it up, you need to change machines.

    • With free weights, if you use the proper techniques, you can do almost any workout with the same weight.

    Workout variations advantage: Free Weights

  5. Risk of Injury:

    • The easiest way to get injured using a weight machine is to take the machine for granted.  By that, I mean you could be adding too much weight because it feels lighter due to the pulleys and the machine doing some of the work.  The danger comes from the “ease” of the workout. You can easily overdo it on the machine and injure yourself.

    • The easiest way to get injured using free weights is improper technique.  One wrong move and you can tweak a muscle or a joint and injure yourself.

    Risk of injury advantage: Tie
Basically, it comes down to preference and what is right for you in your situation.

If you are elderly, a beginner, rehabbing an injury, have a medical reason like mine, or are looking more at keeping in shape than bulking up, then the weight machine may be a better fit for you.

If you are an athlete, experienced in lifting, have a consistent spotter of equal or greater strength or are looking to bulk up, then free weights may be a better fit.

Regardless of which one you use, make sure that you warm up, stretch out and use proper lifting techniques at all times.

Until next time, Stay Healthy, Stay Fit, Stay Strong!

Here’s Your Answer

Questions From Our Members

E. Hendricks of Fresno, California asks:

“You have a lot of different plans.  Can you explain difference in the benefits for each plan?”

Savon’s Answer

This is a question that we get asked all the time.  The answer is simple…  There is no difference in the benefits for any of the plans!

Although we offer 8 different individual plans and 1 business plan, the only difference in the plans is the membership fee and the length of time the plan is in effect.  To become a member, simply find the plan that you qualify for and that fits your needs.  The benefits are all the same.

A Simple Summer Message

Summer Is Here

Every summer we hear news reports of kids drowning.  As the days get hotter, kids are more drawn to water as a way of keeping cool.  There are a lot of safety apparatuses on the market but nothing takes the place of adult supervision.  Please take a few minutes to “kid proof” your home.  Make sure that anything that can hold water is out of the reach of toddlers.  Make sure that your pool gate latch is working and the gate is secure.

Above all…  watch your kids around any type of water!!
