Braces!

Having braces can be the pits sometimes.  In the end, the discomfort that braces can put you through will be worth it!  In the meantime, there are a lot of small details that people with braces must learn if they want to reach that end point; the time in which the braces finally come off.  Unfortunately, one of the most inconvenient parts of having braces is the fact that there are certain foods and drinks that you cannot have.

Foods that are hard have the most potential for damaging your braces.  Apples, hard candy, carrots, ice and potato chips are just a few of the many hard or crunchy foods that might break your appliance.  Also avoid sticky foods such as caramels and tootsie rolls.  Be careful when eating them.  Cut them up into bite-sized pieces or avoid them altogether.

Soft drinks are a problem because they coat the surfaces of the teeth and gums with harmful sugars and acids.  You can't go wrong with fruit juice, right? Wrong.  Unfortunately, fruit juices--particularly those that are 100 percent juice--contain the same problematic ingredients of soft drinks and sports drinks.  While wearing braces, patients are encouraged to drink abundant water and milk.

If you want to wear your braces for the shortest treatment time possible, you'd better know how to take care of them.
  • Make an appointment with you orthodontist every 6 weeks.

  • Brush and floss after every meal.  Use a floss threader to get between the braces and a proxy brush to clear out any food particles.  You can get these both from your orthodontist or at your local store.

  • Every week do a self-examination to see if you have any loose brackets or loose wires.  If you notice you do, contact your orthodontist as soon as possible!

Organic Shampoo!!

There are many benefits of making your own hair products.  People that are looking to lead an organic lifestyle can use products they know are truly organic.  As no chemicals have been used to make the products, homemade hair care will be kind to your hair and skin, and to the environment.

No special ingredients are required to make your own organic hair products.  However, the better quality the ingredients, the better the end result will be.  Therefore use the freshest of ingredients wherever possible.

You can create a shampoo by using a base of castille soap.  Castille soap is basically a vegetable based oil soap as opposed to most commercial soap bases, which use a base of animal fat.

There are many varieties of castile soap that come from the natural oil base that they are made from.  The most popular castile soap bases are: Olive oil, Hemp oil, Coconut Oil, Almond oil and Jojoba oil.

You have two options when it comes to building your shampoo from a castille soap base and that is to either to make it from scratch or buy a pre-made base from an organic soap maker.

Once you have chosen your castile soap base, you can add your essential and/or fragrance oils to the mixture.  Different oils will affect the hair in different ways depending on what you are looking for in a home made shampoo.  If you are looking to control dandruff, then you would add Tea Tree oil and Chamomile to your shampoo base.  If you wanted to add extra shine to your hair with a great scent, then you would add Lemongrass and Rosemary.

Here are some oil and herb combinations that you can used based on creating a shampoo that begins with 4oz of castile soap for placement in an 8oz bottle:
  • Dandruff Control: ½oz Tea Tree oil and 2 1/2oz strained Chamomile Tea.

  • Extra Shine: 2½ oz strained Lemongrass Tea and 1/2oz Rosemary oil.

  • Control Oily Hair: ½oz Lavender oil and 2 1/2oz strained Sage tea.

  • Thicken Hair: 1oz Rosemary oil and 1/2oz strained Nettles.
Once you have created your organic shampoo, store the bottle in a cool and dark area.  Because you are creating something using natural and organic ingredients, the product must be used and cannot have an indefinite shelf life as the chemical additive shampoos that are on the market today.

Easy Extra Fudgy Brownies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • 3 tbsp water
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ⅔ cup flour

½ cup baking chips, frozen, any flavor (chocolate, mint, butterscotch, white chocolate, peanut butter), optional**

Mix all ingredients by hand just until blended.  Avoid overmixing!  Fold in frozen chocolate chips if desired.  Pour into a greased 9x9 inch baking pan and bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.  You can tell they're done when you insert a toothpick in the center of the pan and it comes out clean.  I've found that the baking time for these brownies is almost perfect at 25 minutes*.

* This recipe is small.  I prefer to double it for thicker brownies.  If you double the recipe, increase baking time to 35 min.

If you have a unique recipe that you would like to share with Grandma C., feel free to drop her an email by clicking here.

Colds, Allergies And Toothaches…Revisited

With the cold and flu season in full swing, and allergies coming in behind them… Most Valley residents are unluckily suffering from one of the above maladies.  Personally, I know my dental office has been inundated with patients with toothaches the past few weeks and several were cold or allergy related.  I also had my 6 yr old daughter (who is down and out with the flu right now) tell me that her teeth hurt this evening.  Having explained to her what very well may be causing her a “teethache”, I felt it was a good time to touch on this subject again by revisiting a previous article of mine with all of you.

It is quite normal for person suffering from a cold or allergies, to experience the universal symptom of congested sinuses.  What‘s that have to do with my teeth or my toothache?

When sinuses are congested giving way to that puffy face feeling, it can place undue pressure on the roots of the upper teeth that lay close or within the sinus cavity.  This can cause uncomfortable sensations when chewing and even mild to severe throbbing.  Usually the onset of the toothache arrives shortly after the cold/allergy symptoms do and subside when the latter does as well.

However, not all toothaches experienced when you‘ve got a cold or allergies are caused by sinus congestion.  So it‘s important to pay attention to your toothache.  If it lasts more than a few days and cannot be alleviated with over-the-counter medication, it‘s important to see your dentist to have him rule out other possible causes AND to see your physician to make sure you‘re not suffering from a sinus infection.  Never ignore tooth discomfort of any kind; it‘s usually there for a reason!

Losing Your Job: A Blow to Your Health Too

An exact reprint from Time Health & Science

Losing your job can make you feel lousy.  Whether you're fired or laid-off, joining the ranks of the unemployed is not exactly a feel-good event.  You don't need a study to tell you that.

But what impact does losing a job have on your health?  Could a layoff send a perfectly healthy person into a downward spiral of sickness?  It's possible, says Kate Strully, a sociologist at State University of New York in Albany.  In her new study published in the journal Demography, Strully analyzed a variety of job loss situations – including being fired or laid off or losing a job after the entire company shut down – and found that job loss may indeed trigger serious physical and physiological illness.  more…

Insurance Insight: - Contrary To Popular Belief:

I admitted to being in drug rehab for heroin two years ago and I can‘t get insurance

Poor choices in lifestyle, unfortunately, can make it hard to get major medical coverage.  Carriers go by medical statistics, and a former drug addict has better than a 75% chance of back-sliding in the first five to seven years.  That‘s why the wait before a carrier will take an application.  One or two carriers have a three year wait, others up to seven years.

Also, the carrier worries about other potentially addictive substances, such as alcohol.  There is a correlation between the two, though that is a statistic only.  The reason a carrier won‘t take an application immediately and simply put an exclusion on anything drug-related is because drug abuse generally has an adverse affect on many other health issues and sometimes the use of illicit drugs is only a symptom of a bigger problem.
