Quote Of The Month:  I'm always amazed to hear of air crash victims so badly mutilated that they have to be identified by their dental records. What I can't understand is, if they don't know who you are, how do they know who your dentist is?  (Paul Merton - British writer, actor and comedian - 1957 - present)

Lower Your Blood Pressure With These Foods

Your Diet can either be your enemy or your greatest ally when it comes to blood pressure.  If you suffer from hypertension I'm sure you‘ve been told to avoid salty foods, but did you know a lot of common and popular foods are packed with excess sodium?  Some of these popular foods that add high levels of sodium to your diet are:

  • breads and rolls
  • cold cut meats
  • pizza
  • most soups
  • snack crackers

Eating a diet that is rich in whole grains, fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products can help lower your risk of hypertension.

Here are a few examples of some foods you can enjoy that contain little or no salt:
  • Bananas – This fruit is loaded with potassium.  The mineral helps balance the effects of salt and helps the kidneys function properly.  If you do not like bananas try these other potassium packed foods: potatoes, dates and avocado.

  • Egg Whites – Go easy on the yolk.  Egg whites are high in protein and they contain a peptide which helps lower blood pressure.

  • Tomatoes – Tomatoes are rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that eliminates dangerous free radicals that can damage DNA and other fragile cell structures.  You don‘t need to eat the tomato whole/plain, you can easily swap out your soft drink for a cup of tomato juice or incorporate it into your cooking such as spaghetti sauce.

  • Dark chocolate – All you need is just a small amount every day.  Dark chocolate is packed with age-busting antioxidants and mood-enhancing powers.

  • Watermelon – This fruit is one of the richest natural sources of L-citrulline, the amino acid required for the formation of nitric oxide essential to the regulation of vascular tone and healthy blood pressure.

  • Raisins – Snacking on raisins three times a day could mildly lower blood pressure.  Raisins nutritional value includes potassium, fiber and antioxidants.
Hypertension is not something you want to mess with, it has many side effects if not treated such as: stroke, enlarged heart, heart failure, heart attack and many others.  As always, consult with your doctor before you switch your diet or try treating hypertension on your own as some of these foods can adversely affect people with diabetic conditions.

Chiles Rellenos Casserole Made Easy

Ingredients

  • 4 small cans whole green chiles
  • 5 eggs (4, if the jumbo eggs)
  • 1 can evaporated milk (13 oz)
  • 1½ cups grated cheddar and jack cheese blend (I buy the pre-mixed pkgs)
  • Additional ¾ cup of cheddar cheese, grated
  • 3½ tbsp flour
  • 1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.  Grease bottom and sides of a glass casserole dish**.  Rinse the chiles, remove seeds, dry.

Layer half of the chilies on the bottom of the dish, followed by ½ the cheese blend, the remaining chiles, then the rest of the cheese blend.

In a mixing bowl, beat the eggs, evaporated milk, flour, salt and pepper until frothy.

Pour egg mixture over chiles and cheese. Bake for 1 hour, remove.  Immediately spread tomato paste evenly over the casserole, top with remaining cheddar cheese, then bake for additional ½ hour.

Let it stand for a few minutes before you serve.  Recipe serves 6.

**An 8 x 11 casserole dish is ideal, 8 x 8 will make a thicker casserole and will take a little longer to bake.

Note to my readers:  There are times that I will post a recipe that I haven't had a chance to try.  If you have a problem with a recipe or if you have discovered a variation, please send me your feedback!

Enjoy!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Water Work Outs Will Help You Stay Cool And Fit.

I don‘t know about all of you, but I hate working out in the summer.  Now, I think I have an excuse because I live in Arizona where it is 100+ degrees 6 months out of the year, at least it feels that way.  However, excuses aside I think that majority of you will agree with me that working out in the heat is miserable.

Well my fellow fitness freaks, once again I come to you with an answer.  A way that can help you get your work out in and stay cool.  The best of both worlds!!  It is called Water Workouts!  That‘s right, working out in the pool.

Now before you send me a bunch of emails claiming that this is an “elderly person‘s way of working out’ (as the misconception goes), I will quickly jump to my defense by reminding you that many professional athletes in ALL sports work out in a pool.

There is more to a pool workout than just swimming laps.  There are multiple exercises that you can do, some require an apparatus and others don‘t.

Before I give you some ideas, I need to throw out a quick disclaimer.  Make sure that you exercise in the shallow end of the pool, ideally no more than 4 feet deep and please make sure that you do have someone with you in case of an emergency.

Here are some ideas for some great pool workouts:
    With Apparatus:

  1. Paddle Boat:  Take a kick board or noodle and lay your upper body on it.  Do laps in the pool by only kicking your feet.  You can do this laying on your back to chest to work both sides of your legs.

  2. Wheel Boat:  Do the same thing as above, but put your legs on the apparatus and do laps by only using your arms.  You can do the freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly or backstroke.
    Without Apparatus:

  1. Bicycle:  Lean back against this side of the pool and place your arms out on the sidewall.  Paddle your legs as though are pedaling a bike

  2. Pendulum:  Do the same as above, but keep your legs together and swing them left to right.  (Hint: this is a great warm up and stretching exercise too, it stretches the lower back really good)

  3. Crunch:  Do the same as above, but now pull your knees up to your chest and then stretch them out.
Whichever one of these you try, I will assure you that will get a good workout.

Until Next Time:  Stay Fit, Stay Strong, Stay Hydrated and Stay COOL!!
