Quote Of The Month:   "Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases:  If it moves, tax it.  If it keeps moving, regulate it.  And if it stops moving, subsidize it."  (Ronald Regan - 1911-2004 - 40th President)

Senior Health

People in the United States are living longer than ever before.  Many seniors live an active and healthy lifestyle, but there is no getting around one thing:  as our loved ones age, their health, bodies and mind change.

Of course we want our loved ones to live forever, but we know that‘s not the case, so it‘s important to understand what to expect and help them live a longer, healthier life.

Having a healthy lifestyle can help your loved one deal with normal aging changes and make the most out of their life with these simple tips.

  • Get Moving - Physical activity is very important for developing the strong bones and muscle they will need in case of a fall or accident.  Exercise helps in controlling weight, improves moods, boosts energy, and promotes better sleep with many more benefits.  Aim for 30 minutes a day whether you break it up into 10 minute sessions or do it all at once.  *As always, consult your physician before beginning*

  • Prevent Falls – Elders are prone to injuries from falling, so it‘s important to anticipate potential hazards at the residence.  Reduce the risk of falling by removing things that can be tripped on (shoes, books, and clothes).  Install hand rails, use non- slip rugs in the bathroom and kitchen and improve the lighting in the house.

  • Regular Checkups - Seeing your doctor on a regular basis to discuss your general health will help you stay on top of potential problems.  As a senior you may be taking a handful of medications so it is important to review all prescriptions so that your doctor can make changes if needed.

  • Driving – Aging comes with changes to eyesight, hearing and reflexes which can make driving trickier and may increase the chance of accidents.  If you have concerns or are convinced that a loved one is dangerous behind the wheel, please confront them about your concern and talk about hanging up the car keys.
Caring for Elders is never easy, though it needs to be done whether it means being a full time caregiver or just overseeing their care.

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:

Grandma C.

Cheesy Garlic/Dill Mashed Cauliflower

Ingredients

  • 2 heads cauliflower (cut into florets)
  • 2-3 Fresh garlic cloves (to taste)
  • ½ cup sour cream
  • 2 tsp fresh dill weed (optional)
  • 2-3 TBSP milk
  • ¼ cup fresh grated parmesan cheese

In large sauce pan place the cauliflower and garlic cloves together in approximately 1½ inches of water.  Bring to a boil and then reduce heat and simmer until lightly tender.  You will want the vegetables to be slightly crunchy for consistency.

Drain remaining water and place the cauliflower, garlic and the rest of the ingredients in a food processer.  (A blender will work but the process takes a bit longer.)  Blend until the cauliflower takes on the quality of mashed potatoes.  It will be slightly more grainy than potatoes.

Spray a baking dish with cooking spray.  Transfer the mixture to the baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes.  Serves 4-6 people.

This is a great recipe for low carb lovers! You would never know that it isn't potatoes!

Enjoy!  And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Clayton (TR)

Just Do It!

No…  this is not a Nike endorsement!

This is my subtle attempt to make a plea for people to get out and exercise.

There is this common misconception that you need to pay $25.00 per month for a gym subscription, go 4 times per week and dose up on a bunch of vitamins and supplements to be healthy.

That is not always the case.

Don‘t get me wrong, going to gym is fantastic.  The vitamins and supplements serve their purpose.  I take vitamins on a regular basis.

My point is this;  Keeping fit and staying healthy does not mean that you have to be ready to participate in the strongest man competition or be the most ripped person on your block.

“In-Shape” and “Healthy” are two very generic terms that vary from person to person.  Me being in shape is different from you being in shape.  Why do you think that is?  If you answered “because all of our bodies are different” then you are correct.  There is no committee out there to tell you whether or not you are in shape.  It is not determined by the size of your pecs or whether or not you have a “6 pack” of abs.

Still not sold?  Look at the professional football players.  These guys are in better shape than most athletes out there and not all of them have a washboard stomach.

The important thing when it comes to physical activity is to “Just Do It”.  You would not believe the workout I get by doing simple everyday things like pulling the weeds in the yard, running with my dog or even working on a car.

Believe it or not, I can work out more muscles by doing those then spending a hour at the gym.  Running, Jogging, Biking, Hiking and walking are all great ways to stay in-shape and I don‘t know about you, but I feel great after doing some of those.  My body is loosened up, stretched out, blood is flowing good and my energy level is up.  All signs of being in shape.

So in-closing, my plea is this.  ust Do It!!  Physical activity of some sort on a regular basis.  I have said it many times in previous articles, the main key to keeping fit is consistency!

Until next time, stay fit, stay healthy, stay strong!
