What´s New at Savon
Quote Of The Month: One Easter morning, a farmer's wife boiled some eggs, colored them, and hid them in the barn for her kids. A little while later the rooster found them. Not knowing anything about Easter, he beat up the peacock. - (Unknown)

Health Benefits Of Watermelon
|
It‘s about that time of year again… SUMMER!
What comes to mind when you hear the word summer? I picture boating, fishing, swimming, cookouts and my favorite summer fruit, watermelon… Yummy!
Watermelon is more than delicious; it is the representation of summer and is the most consumed melon in the United States followed by cantaloupe and honeydew.
What's really important about watermelon, (but most people don't know) is it's a super food that contains about 92% of water and it‘s packed with high amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Health scientists have found that consuming watermelon whether, it‘s the actual fruit or drinking the juice has many health benefits such as:
|
- Hydrating the body – A study conducted at the University of Aberdeen Medical School found that watermelon can hydrate your body, even better than pure water. This is because watermelon contains extra rehydration substances like calcium, magnesium and potassium.
- Relieves muscle soreness – Watermelon contains an amino acid called L-citrulline which is a natural remedy to help soothe muscle pain. A huge study was done at a University in Spain and they found if you drink about 2 cups of pure watermelon juice one hour before working out you will notice less muscle soreness post exercise.
- Keeps kidneys healthy – Watermelon contains a natural diuretic which helps flush toxins from the body. Eating watermelon also reduces the risk of kidney stones.
- Gum health – Studies have shown that low vitamin C concentrations have been determined to be a risk factor for periodontitis. Although having low vitamin C doesn‘t cause periodontitis, it can put you at risk for the disease. Since watermelon is high in vitamin C, eating this fruit can help your oral heath.
With just the few health benefits I named, it seems as if there isn‘t much that watermelon can‘t help! What more could you ask for in a fruit?

Stationary Bike
|
Just like a treadmill, the stationary bike is an apparatus that is in every gym.
Nowadays with the youth movement of workouts, they are getting classified as an “old person‘s workout”.
Seriously, I have heard them referred to as that at the gym. However, the stationary bike, when used correctly, is a great multi-faceted tool.
Here are some ways that one can be used to your biggest advantage, regardless of your age.
1. Cardio Workout: If you are looking to get your heart rate up and increase your blood flow, a stationary bike is great. You want to put it on it‘s low gear setting so the petals are easy to use and you pedal faster.
|
2. Leg and Hip workout: Stating the obvious for anyone that has ridden a bicycle, it is quite a leg workout. There is no different with a stationary bike. If you use the mid to higher gears you can get a great and effective workout for your legs and hips.
3. Conditioning: A stationary bike is great for building stamina and conditioning for, well just about any activity. Whether it be a marathon, a 5K walk, swimming or just about any sport, bike riding helps build the endurance that you need to get through it. Just ask any professional athlete; a stationary bike is used in almost every sport. On the stationary bike, you find a comfortable pedaling gear and set a goal for time and distance and over a period of time, you increase the time and distance.
4. Rehabilitation: A stationary bike is the go to rehab tool for most lower body injuries. Thus being the reason there is one in just about every training room, physical therapy center, locker room, clubhouse and sideline. Ever see them on the sideline of an NFL game? Yes, they are there for rehab purposes. When a player comes off of the field with a cramp, he is stretched out and then jumps on the stationary bike. If you have ever had a knee injury, pulled a hamstring, strained a calf, sprained an ankle, bruised your hip, have a tender lower back or had surgery on any part of your lower body, I can almost assure that you the stationary bike will be recommended as part of your recovery. The main reason is the fact that you are seated while using it. You can work the joint or the area while putting minimal pressure on it. This allows for a more effective and targeted rehab session and lowers the risk of an in-rehab reaggravation.
The biggest reason that a stationary bike is used for lower body rehab is also the biggest weakness of the apparatus. It is area focused. Unlike a treadmill or elliptical which work out more of your body, the stationary bike is designed for a lower body workout. Not to mention the fact that you are seated. So if you are looking for a full body workout apparatus, then look past the stationary bike. However, if you are looking for a lower body workout, an endurance workout or looking to rehab a lower body injury then the stationary bike should be your go to device.
Until next time: Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!

Questions From Our Members
J. Wilson of Tucson, Arizona asks:
“I travel to Florida a lot and I see that Savon can not be purchased in Florida but you have providers there. If I need dental work while I'm there, is Savon good at these providers?”
Savon’s Answer
Florida is a regulated state and Savon does not have enough members there to make it worth our time and money to become sales compliant. Although we can't and don't sell the plan there, it is legal for our network of providers in Florida to provide services for any Savon member.
Funny Easter Jokes
The Meaning Of Easter
A Sunday school teacher was asking her six-year-olds about the meaning of Easter. “Children,” she said, “Do you know why we celebrate Easter?”
A little girl raised her hand.
“Yes Jenny,” said the teacher.
Jenny said, “ Is Easter when we put on costumes and go trick-or-treating?”
“No, Jenny. That‘s Halloween. Does any one else know?”
A little boy yelled, “It‘s when we set off fireworks!”
“No Jimmy, that‘s Independence Day. Anybody else?”
A shy little girl in the back said, “Easter is when Jesus died.”
The teacher replied, “That‘s right, Shauna. And what happened to Jesus that makes Easter special?”
“Well, he died and got buried. And every Easter he comes out. And if he sees his shadow there‘s 6 more weeks of winter.”
Palm Sunday
One Palm Sunday, little Johnny was sick and stayed home from church. When his brothers and sisters came home carrying palm branches, Johnny asked where the palms came from.
His father replied, “When Jesus walked by, people held palm branches over his head.”
"Just my luck!" Johnny said. "The one time I don‘t go to church, Jesus shows up.”
