Breathe Easier During Exercise

Breathe in, Breathe out - sounds simple right?  Not so fast!  Controlling how and when you inhale and exhale can be a little more complicated than you think.  There are many different techniques on how to breathe depending on if you are running, strength training or even doing yoga.

Breathing is probably not the first thing that comes to mind before your workout, but proper breathing is very important for delivering oxygen to your body.  Also proper breathing can help you exercise longer and help clear your mind.

Running - Huffing and puffing will not get you far if you‘re a runner!  Studies have shown that improper breathing techniques can affect your speed and performance.

How to do it right - On the inhale take two steps (one left, one right) and on the exhale take two steps (one left, one right)

Strength Training - We have all heard exhale on exertion.  Contracting the respiratory muscles help you brace the load during heavier lifts, and this also helps stable the lumbar.

How to do it right - Bench Press example:  Exhale slowly while lifting and inhale on the way back down.  Keep your core engaged to protect your spine.

Yoga - Relaxation time!  There are two different types of breathing techniques.

How to do it right - Sama Vritti (Equal breathing); this type of breathing helps calm the nervous system, lower blood pressure and reduces stress.  This is done by matching an equal length inhale to equal length exhale.

To power through more demanding types of yoga, such as Ashtanga, Vinyasa and Power Yoga many rely on Ujjayi breath (Victorious breathing); do this by simply breathing in and out through the nose, maintain a slight contraction in the throat.

If you‘re still out of breath, there are many strength training exercises you can try to improve your performance.  Also ditching cigarettes, bad posture and keeping asthma and allergies in check are key factors for better breathing.

Seasoned Home Fries with Chipotle Dipping Sauce

Ingredients

    Potatoes
  • 1 or 2 pounds of Mini Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1 TBSP Olive Oil
  • 1 TBSP Mrs. Dash seasoning, any flavor

  • Dipping Sauce
  • ⅓ cup BBQ sauce, any style
  • ⅓ cup Sour Cream
  • 1TBSP Ground Cumin
  • 1TBSP Chipotle seasoning
  • Salt and Pepper

Slice potatoes lengthwise into quarters.  Put them into a lage zipper style plastic bag.  Add the olive oil and Mrs. Dash seasoning to the bag and shake to mix until all of the potatoes are covered.

Place them on a cookie sheet (single layer, don't stack!).  Bake at 425 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

While the Potatoes are in the oven, mix the BBQ sauce and sour cream in a bowl.  Add in the ground cumin, chipotle seasoning and salt and pepper (to taste), mix well.  Serve with home fries.

This is a surprisingly easy recipe and it's got a great flavor!

To Your Health: with Clayton "TR" Parker

Heat Related Illness

Here in Arizona we deal with record breaking and sometime excruciating heat.  It is not uncommon that we will reach 113+ degrees on a summer afternoon.  A heat wave can be tricky too.  At times it may not feel as hot as it is due to random cloud cover.  This is when it becomes very dangerous as well.  Since it does not feel as hot as it actually is, certain heat related safety guidelines are often not followed.  This causes a rise in heat related illness every year.

Heat related illness is preventable if you follow the guidelines to keep yourself hydrated and safe.

A good rule of thumb to follow on a 113+ day is: “if you feel thirsty then you are already overheated” so drinking water consistently is very important.

There are 4 types of heat related illness.
  1. Heat Cramps (caused by low salt levels due to excessive seating)

  2. Heat Syncope (or Heat Fainting, caused by standing too long)

  3. Heat Exhaustion (caused by losing too much water and salt)

  4. Heat Stroke (when the body is unable to cool down)
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke are the two most commonly recognized by people.  However, one common misconception is that they are the same thing.  Heat exhaustion is basically the warning sign that heat stroke is near onset.  Someone suffering from heat exhaustion can usually recover with little or no difficulty by sipping water or clear juice slowly (so you do not get sick), and resting in a cool place.  Heat stroke on the other hand can be life threatening.  When someone suffering from heat stroke, their body temperature can reach or exceed 106 degrees in a matter of minutes.  Any attempt to cool them down with water and a cool place to rest will be ineffective because the body is unable to cool down.  A heat stroke victim needs immediate medical attention.  Call 9-1-1 immediately, place them in cool area, soak their clothes with water and fan them until paramedics arrive.  Here are symptoms for both Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke:
  • Symptoms for heat exhaustion include:  Heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle cramps, change in complexion, nausea, clammy skin, higher body temperature, fast and shallow breathing

  • Symptoms for heat stroke include:  profuse sweating or no sweating, crying with no tears, chills, hallucinations, hot dry skin, high body temperature, confusion, dizziness, slurred speech and throbbing headache.
Heat is no joke.  I have lived in the desert state of Arizona my whole life and trust me when I say that being “used to the heat” is a myth.  Please make sure that if you are out in the heat, regardless of what you are doing, that you make sure that you have plenty of water (recommended is 1 gallon per person, per day) on hand and spend adequate time in the shade.
