How Soda Destroys Your Body

Soda, pop, cola, soft drink – whatever you call it – is one of the worst beverages that you can drink.

I know this is will be a lot to take in if you are currently a soda drinker but don‘t freak out!  We may think it‘s harmless to drink a bottle of soda or more, but the negaTive effects are too great to be ignored.

Some of these negative effects include:

  • Brain Damage:  When mixed with a common food dye, the fake sweetener aspartame becomes toxic to brain cells.

  • Aging:  Phosphates, which give many soft drinks their tangy taste can accelerate aging.

  • Breast Cancer:  BPA coatings found in linings of soda cans can disrupt your hormones, promoting breast cancer.

  • Diet-Soda Belly:  You may think since it‘s diet it‘s better for you, however, drinking two or more a day may lead to weight gain around the belly.

  • Tooth Sensitivity:  Phosphoric and citric acids alter pH balance in the mouth, leading to permanent enamel erosion.

  • Skin Rashes:  Some sodas contain flame retardant brominated vegetable oil, a chemical linked to rashes and nerve disorder.

  • Increased blood Sugar:  Ingesting sugar and high frucTose corn syrup causes a spike in blood sugar and insulin, which can lead to stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

  • Kidney Stones:  Fructose increases excretion of calcium, oxalate, and uric acid, which can contribute to stone formation.
If you are currently a soda drinker, please consider all of these risk factors and try to control this unhealthy habit.  Moderation is the key.  Limit your intake of these sugary beverages as much as possible.  This includes energy drinks, sports drinks, juice and even sweetened water & tea.

Crockpot Chicken-Hawaiian Style

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs boneless chicken breast, cubed
  • 1 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 can (20 oz) chunk pineapple
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • ½ cup onion, diced in laRge chunks (the sweet style, purple onion)
  • ½ cup green pepper, sliced
  • Salt and pepper

Mix the pineapple juice, soy sauce and brown sugar together.  Add cubed chicken to crock pot.

Add chunked pineapple, green pepper and onion over the chicken.  Pour pineapple juice mixture over the top.

Cover and cook on low heat 6 hours or high heat 4 hours.  Serve over white rice.

Tip:  A good variAtion of this meal if you prefer dark meat, is to use whole chicken thighs instead of chicken breast.  Also, use coconut water or coconut milk to cook the rice and it adds a nice tropical flavor to the dish!

Enjoy!  And remember, if it looks good, eat it!!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Clayton (TR)

Your Music Choice Can Affect Your Workout!

Think about it!  The quality of your workout can be affected by the music blaring in your ears.

You may not realize it but if you become mindful of it you may see it.  It really makes sense.

A study reported in The Journal of Sports Medicine® evaluAted the work-out routines of athletes.  The results were interesting.  They reported that athletes who listen to upbeat music with a fast tempo worked out at a faster pace, for a longer period and reported that they were fulfilled in their workout.

Athletes that worked out to softer music with a slower tempo worked out at a slower pace, for a shorter period of time, took more time between sets and reported that they were tired out but did not feel as fulfilled in their workout.

Why do you think that is?  It has to do with cadence.

Take running, for example.  Whether you are on a treadmill or distance running and listening to music, you tend to run to the cadence of the music.  It is a natural human reaction.  When you hear the beat and feel the beat then you tend to move to the beat.  The tempo of the song sets the pace.

The second part of this is psychological.  Slower music tends to be more calming to the mind and faster music tends to stimulate the mind and increase the flow of adrenaline.

So, for those times when you feel that something may be lacking in your woRkout, evaluate your playlist on your IPOD or MP3.  Change it up, see if it works for you!

Until next time, Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong and Upbeat! (pun intended)
