To your health:
The trick to New Years resolutions

Every year thousands of New Years Resolutions are made, from losing weight and quitting smoking, all the way to money management to drastic lifestyle changes.  Did you know that roughly 80% of all New Years Resolutions are broken by January 31st? So, now we ask, how do the other 20% do it? The answer is easy...  They have a plan.

Most resolutions are made on a whim, no real thought behind it, just a simple statement of what you “plan” to change for the next year.  There are some out there who do plan their resolutions in advance, but they still lack the same things as the people who don‘t.  Here are a few things to think about when making your resolution this year:

Be realistic...  Make your resolution something that is actually possible.  You know that saving a million dollars in 2009 is a pretty unreachable goal.  Make your goal something that you know you can actually do, if you stick to it.

Make a plan.  Yes, actually sit down and write out a plan.  Start with what you want the overall outcome of your resolution to be.  For example, “by this time next year, I want to be 60lbs lighter.” That will be your goal for December 2009.  Then, set a small goal for every month in between, goals that will help you achieve your main goal.

Reward yourself...  Resolutions are about you as an individual (most of the time).  Chances are, no one else is going to reward you for your accomplishments (depending on what your resolution is), and this can be discouraging and can cause you to break your resolution.  So, it‘s important to reward yourself every time you accomplish one of your goals.

Put on your obstacle-blocker...  No one‘s life is “perfect” and things do come up that can prevent us from reaching our goals.  However, a resolution is about bettering yourself and your own life.  By allowing obstacles to interfere with your goal, you are allowing other elements to control your life.  For example: “I quit smoking for New Years and I‘ve been doing good, but my boss really made me mad today and I had a cigarette...” You just let that situation take control of your life.  You‘ve got to set your goal and not let ANYTHING get in the way no matter what.

There are thousands of different things we can do as a “resolution,” but with a little will power, determination, and a good plan of action, anything is possible.

Here‘s to a glorious holiday season and safe (but fun) New Year!

A question from a member:

Question:

I want to buy a plan as a gift for a needy friend.  Does Savon offer have a program for this?

Savon's Answer:

Yes! During the holiday season, Savon offers gift certificates for purchase at a reduced price.  The gift certificates are available for both the Basic and Plus Plans, and you as a member will also receive a gift for purchasing a certificate.  This program is in effect until December 20, 2008.  For details on this offer, call us toll free at 1-800-809-3494.

It’s not too late to donate!

Despair

Charities across the country are suffering a holiday crisis due to the decline of the economy.  Charities who cater to the less fortunate have seen a steep decline in donations, leaving them with an extreme demand for emergency food boxes and other items used to donate to needy families.

It‘s times like these that we need to come together as a community.  Money is tight for everyone, but by reducing the amount we spend on ourselves this year, why not take a little chunk out of that to help make someone else‘s holiday a little better? Here‘s how you can help:

Go through your cupboards...This shouldn‘t “cost” you anything, and can be a great help to a family who may not get to have Christmas dinner this year, or even a Christmas at all.  If you have canned or boxed food that have been filling the shelves of your pantry for months, make some space by donating those items to your local food drive.

Go through your closets..  You know that pair of jeans or that sweater that doesn‘t fit anymore?? There are families out there who have no winter clothes or any new clothes at all for that matter...  Check your local charities for clothing drives, or donate to local thrift stores.  Your local Salvation Army will also accept food and clothing donations all year long.

Give a penny to a bell ringer...  You see the Salvation Army bell ringers outside major department and grocery stores throughout the holidays.  Many people walk right by and ignore it, but what people don‘t realize is that these people are volunteers, taking time out of their personal life to try to help make someone else‘s a little bit better.  So, maybe next time you walk by a bell ringer, take the two seconds to stop and drop in a penny.  Every cent counts!

There are many other organizations and charities that are in need of donations this year.  If you want to give a little bit more, you can check in to other programs such as Adopt-A-Family or The Angel Tree.  Your local charities may also have similar programs to choose from.  So this year, make your holiday brighter by helping someone else have an enjoyable one.

Holiday fun facts:

Seeing that it's holiday time, we thought that you would enjoy some fun facts pertaining to this time of year:

  • Due to time zones, Santa Claus has only 31 hours to deliver presents.  This means he would have to visit 832 homes a second!

  • Hanukkah is correctly spelled many different ways including Chanukah, Chanukkah, and Hanukah.

  • Americans feast on 535 million pounds of turkey on Thanksgiving.

  • Alabama was the first state to declare Christmas as a legal holiday in 1836.

  • It takes 44 candles all together to observe all the nights of Hanukkah.

  • Only male turkey‘s gobble.

  • Oklahoma was the last state to declare Christmas as a legal holiday in 1907.

  • Once lit, Hanukkah candles may not be used for anything else like lighting other candles or reading.  There is a “helper” candle called the Shamash that is used to light the rest of the candles each night.  This candle is always lit first.

  • Turkey‘s can drown if they look up!

  • During the Holiday Season, Visa cards alone are used an average of 5,340 times a minute in the US alone!
See you next month with more fun facts.

From our Marketing Department:

The transition from 2007 to 2008 was relatively smooth as far as marketing goes.  The decline in the economy has brought on some challenges for us this year, but we‘ve taken those challenges and used them to our advantage as well as our members.  With thousands of people losing their benefits this year, we‘ve adjusted not only our prices and plans, but we‘ve also fine-tuned our customer service to meet the needs of our suffering economy.  We‘ve taken the term “flexibility” to a whole new level by adjusting and tweaking anything we can in order to help someone.  This has allowed us to help people in this time of need as well as maintain our good reputation in customer service.

Sadly, Savon has taken a big hit this year with the untimely and unexpected death of Gordon Parker, a key partner and co-founder of Savon Dental Plan.  Gordon was a very successful salesman and had a very good grasp on marketing in general.  The marketing department was lucky to have Gordon and looked to him often for advice and ideas.  His passing has given us the drive and determination we need to do our part to keep this ship sailing.  All we can do is take what he has given us, move forward with it, and make him proud, which is what we intend to do.

Over all, the year has flown by with minor obstacles, but you can rest assured that our 2009 will be a successful one.  We will continue to adjust as our economy adjusts so that we can maintain the stability we have always provided for our members.

Have a happy holiday season and best wishes for 2009!

The Marketing Department

From Account Retention & Customer Service:

Wow how this year has flown by. Doesn't seem like as you get older time seems to fly by? This year has been a rough one for some of us. I would like to thank those who have stuck with Savon Dental Plan for their dental needs. I think we have all felt the crunch of the economy in one way or the other.  Most find that paying for their dental plan is not top priority but here are a few reason why you might not want to let it lapse.

  1. Right now you are locked into a rate that will not change as long as you remain an active member.

  2. A toothache seems to happen when you least expect them. If your plan is canceled and you are unable to reach Savon Dental Plan it will end up costing you more to go to the dentist then if you had your Savon coverage.

  3. If you have kids we all know accidents can happen at any time. You may call up to reinstate your plan, however if billing is not available there may be a waiting period until your coverage begins again.
So, if you need some help give me a call. We do have monthly plans to offer or if you just need a little extra time to get your payment in I am here to work with you as much as I can.

Thank you and Happy Holidays! Jennifer

From Provider Relations:

With another year coming to a close, I would like to take a minute to wish everyone a safe and Happy Holiday Season and to thank all of our providers for their continued support. We greatly appreciate the effort you have put forth in sending us referrals, and the caring, quality service you have given our members has been outstanding.  While this year has not been a banner year economically for anyone, I believe (from our perspective, at least) it has been a banner year for customer satisfaction within this industry.

Looking forward to a bright New Year….

With Sincere Thanks,

Provider Relations Department
