Floss Cuts and Pizza Burn…  A Pain in Everybody's Gums

Floss cuts can occur at anytime while flossing.  Most patients experience these irritating invisible little things when flossing between their bicuspids and molars, especially in areas where the contacts between teeth are extremely tight and the floss snaps through and into the gums.  Floss cuts can usually be avoided if when flossing between the tight contacts, you gently work the floss through until the contact is breached.

Pizza burns are just one of those horrible eating hazards everybody experiences.  Aside from waiting for your pizza to cool prior to eating it, there isn't much one can do to avoid getting the pizza burn.

The good news is, the treatment for both these annoyances is simple and inexpensive.  The remedy?  Salt water!  That‘s right, the best way to aid the healing process is warm salt water rinses.  Most floss cuts and pizza burns will heal on their own in 7-10 days, but the rinses help cut down on lingering irritation and help speed up the healing process.

Keep in mind that if you experience elevated pain or inflammation, definitely have your dentist check out the areas to see if an alternate treatment method is recommended.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is a beneficial treatment for many medical conditions.  The whole body is placed into an airtight chamber.  The patient is then given a treatment of 100% pure oxygen to breathe in.  Normally a standard treatment consists of a 60 minute session where a certified technician is monitoring the patient at all times.

There are many advantages in using the Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy.

  • First it increases the oxygen in the body‘s tissues
  • Stimulates the growth of blood vessels
  • Aids the treatment of infection by enhancing white blood cells

This treatment also helps lessen symptoms of diabetic ulcers, wound care, autism, cerebral palsy, head trauma, multiple sclerosis, Lyme disease and many other ailments.

As with all medicine and medical treatments there are some known side effects of the Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy.  You may feel tired, experience a change in your eye sight.  If unable to clear your ears you may be at a risk to bruise your ear drum.  Convulsions are a risk but this is very unlikely to happen.

To your health:

Seasonal Dehydration

Did you know that you can become as dehydrated in the colder winter months as you can in the dead heat of the summer?  I stumbled across an article on survivaltopics.com that offered up some very surprising information.

"…In general the higher the temperature the greater your water consumption needs to be. If you are active or exposed to the hot rays of the sun you may need upwards of a gallon of water per day to stay to healthy.

Perhaps surprisingly, very cold environments can be as dry as the driest desert.  This is because cold air cannot hold much moisture.  This cold dry air serves to dehydrate your body with every breath you take.  Cold dry air can also rob your body of moisture via loss from exposed skin.  This is one reason why your lips may be prone to chapping.  So during cold weather even though you may not be sweating nearly as much as when you are in a hot environment you may still easily become severely dehydrated without even realizing the danger you are in.

Wind can also play a role in the amount of water you need to take in.  A dry wind on exposed flesh can suck the water right out of a person…"

So whether you're staying in or headed out to brave the cold this winter season, make sure you drink plenty of fluids!
