Worst Snacks For An Afternoon Slump

Do you ever get the three o‘clock droop feeling where you become very tired and hungry again?

Once this happens we often reach for these common snacks to perk us up.  If you tend to reach for any of these pick me up snacks… Don‘t!!

We need to pick smarter snacks that will help us avoid the afternoon slump and will keep us full until dinner.

Here are some of the snacks we grab for and what we should replace them with:

  • Pretzels:  Yes, pretzels are healthier than potato chips, but this snack will not energize you or keep your blood sugars under control.  Pretzels contain calories and carbohydrates with tons of sodium… this will not keep you nourished.
*Try –  Mixing cereal that is high in fiber with some mixed nuts.

  • Baked potato chips:  Yes, these are healthier than the original chips but they contain little protein, fiber and fat.
*Try –  Dry roasted edamame.  (immature soybean).  These offer a nice crunch if that‘s what you are looking for.  They are also rich in protein, fiber and a great source of iron.

  • Sports or energy drinks:  Don‘t let the name fool you.  These drinks are pretty much straight sugar, which makes you feel energized for a short time and once it wears of it will make you crash.
    * Try –  Drinking lots of water.

  • Apples:  Yes, fruit is packed with minerals and vitamins, but eating this alone will not satisfy you.
*Try –  Paring your fruit with some mixed nuts, or dip your fruit into some nonfat greek yogurt.

  • Frozen Yogurt:  We see the word yogurt and we automatically think it will be healthy.  Wrong!  Frozen yogurt is full of sugar, calories and lacks calcium.
*Try –  Getting the smallest cup you can.  Do not add candy for toppings, add fresh fruit.
Hopefully by switching to these new snacks you won‘t experience the three o‘clock droop anymore.

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Need A Workout Partner?  There‘s An App For That!

“There‘s an app for that”!  With the advancement of technology, you could say that about almost anything.  When it comes to health and fitness there are well over 1500 apps in the Google® play store alone and I am sure there are about the same amount for the IPhone® as well.  With these apps you can schedule your routine, track your reps, calories, diet, steps, etc, etc, etc.

My favorite form of working out is bike riding.  I have an app on my phone called Sports Tracker that will track my mileage, mph, time, calories burned, hill inclines and declines, heart rate and even map out the route that I rode that day.  I like it because it helps me track my progress each time out.

However, what if you are one of the people who gets a better workout when you have a partner to work out with?  Well, you guessed it…  There‘s an app for that too!  There are apps out that there that will inform your workout partners of the status of your workout or exercising activities.  One of our co-workers has the Fitbit®.

Fitbit® is a device that she wears on her arm that tracks all of her steps etc.  When she was first telling me about it, my reaction was “Whoo Hoo.. a $100.00 pedometer, the dollar store has those”.  My point of view changed when I researched it and found out what all it can do.

This particular device can connect to an app on your phone or mobile device via Bluetooth or wifi.  It can track your steps, sleep habits, calories, plan out meals, monitor weight loss or gain, track calories and much more.  The neatest thing about this is that you can connect it to your workout partner.

My co-worker has a sister that lives in another state.  They both have the Fitbit® and are connected on it.  They can see each other‘s work out routines and other information that they choose to share with each other.  I remember a couple weeks or ago when she got the “you need to walk more” call from her sister.

The nicest thing about these apps, whether you use Fitbit® or another app, is that they are all relatively inexpensive if they cost anything at all.  You do not need to be a tech guru to figure out how to use it, either.  They are great tools to help you monitor your fitness habits.  There is only one downfall that I have seen so far though…  It will not spot you on weight lifting or stand over you yelling “one more set, come on, you can do it, one more set”.  So in essence it really cannot fully replace your workout partner, but it can help them monitor your progress on your non-gym days.

Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!  See you in 2014!

News From Inside Your Dental Plan

A Holiday Message From C.J. Parker Jr., C.E.O.

As we approach the end of 2013 we let it go with mixed feelings.  For many people 2013 has brought somewhat of an economic recovery and a new hope for the future.  We hope this has been the case for you!  Others, however, have had a very tough time this year and can‘t wait for 2013 to be over.

I‘m not going to sit here and try to paint a pretty picture of 2013 and Savon Dental Plan for you.  The past three years have been very difficult for our dental plan and the new Affordable Care Act isn‘t helping matters at all!  This is the most confusing legislation that I have seen in many years and judging by the reaction, or lack thereof, by our members, you are likely just as confused.  That said, there are a couple of things I would like to point out that many of you may not be aware of.

Under this new act most insurance companies are offering some sort of dental coverage.  The new law requires that pediatric dental be included in the policy.  The law does not require dental to be included for adults, so insurance companies are offering it as an add-on.  The cost of the dental coverage can raise your premiums; the benefits are no better and in most cases they are less than the benefits of dental plans like Savon.

The most important thing to remember about dental insurance is that the new rules affecting pre-existing conditions only apply to health insurance, not dental.  Dental insurance still has pre-existing condition riders, waiting periods and maximum yearly benefit limits.

I would like to personally thank every member of Savon Dental Plan for the trust and loyalty you have shown to us and our providers.  I am especially honored to mention the following people that have been members of our plan for 20 years or more.  I am listing only the primary members, so please know that all spouses and dependents are appreciated as well!

Deborah Craig Jim Lehrman George Masciarelli Harold Bachman
Peter Swarm Ettore Damiani Cinnamon Hayes Tim Martell
Sean McNulty Frances Camacho Shelby Haines Mary McLain
Jamal Gills Sebastian Wolfe Jason Rometty Mildred Davis
Pamela Maher Sherrie Bunten Anthony Ricks Robert Runyon
Ray Perez Gary Blazek Marcus Reyes Joyce Snowden
Rosemary Saucedo Kathryn Bow Avis Beck Valerie Sullivan

I also send a special thank you to every other member of Savon from our newest members to those that have been with us for quite some time.  It's the confidence that you have placed in Savon that has made it possible for us to remain America‘s Dental Plan.  As always, we will do everything in our power to protect this trust and make sure that Savon Dental Plan remains the best value for your dollar.

From Savon Professional Services Inc., and Savon Dental Plan, we send the warmest wishes to all members of the Savon family for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Successful New Year.
