A Year End Message From Our C.E.O. Clayton Parker Jr.:

Clay

Out with 2014 and in with 2015!

Thanksgiving is over, the holiday season is officially here and in the blink of an eye it will be 2015.

As I reflect on the past year I am overcome with many emotions.  I have seen some people have a very successful year but I have seen many more (too many) struggle just to get by and make ends meet.

Savon has not been immune from the trickle down effects of the Affordable Health Care Act and we have felt the pinch as many of you have.  In years past (2009 and earlier) no health insurance company offered individual dental coverage.  Between 2013 and now, virtually all health insurance companies offer it.

These insurance companies have the capital and means to make what they are offering to its‘ customers attractive, however in the end people are finding that it is a far inferior product to what Savon offers.  The good news is that many members are realizing this and returning to Savon!

We pride ourselves in our customer service and we will go to any reasonable extreme to work with our members and make them happy.  Our phones are monitored by a customer service representative 7 days a week, (and yes… I personally helped one of our members on Thanksgiving Day while I was watching football at home).

For those of you that may be facing financial challenges, we have re-instituted our monthly payment option and the 50/50 option.  The early renewal option has also been a great success as it has saved us on printing and postage and we have been able to pass those savings along to the members that take advantage of the early renewal offer.

At the request of many of our members, we are exploring the possibility of aDding an optional vision and hearing plan to our portfolio and we will keep you posted as progress is made.

Our Nominate Your Dentist program is going great and with your help we have been able to recognize the providers that you feel have done an outstanding job of taking care of your oral health.

I would personally invite, (beg, grovel, implore, request or whatever word best describes it) you to visit to our page on the Better Business Bureau and give us a review.  Please note:  This review is for the dental plan not the dentists.

The Better Business Bureau is a strong marketing tool for us and we have had an A+ rating since they started their rating system.  In the past the only thing the BBB allowed consumers to do was file a complaint against a business.  They now allow you to give reviews and express their feelings (good or bad) about a business.  Please take a few minutes and give us a review.  It will be greatly appreciated.

This has been a snapshot of Savon for 2014 and in closing, I would like to wish each and every one of our members and their families the happiest of holidays and a fantastic and prosperous 2015.

Stay safe, stay healthy and stay with Savon, “your dental plan every step of the way!”

Contact Lens Hygiene Mistakes

Contact lenses are great for some people and in most cases extremely suitable for those with active lifestyles.  They work much the same as eyeglasses, but since they don't have frames they stay in place during activities and if you ask any contact lens wearer, they will come up with other advantages over eyeglasses.  There are many different brands, colors and materials used for contact lenses so chances are pretty good you will be able to find the best fit and color for you.

Contact lenses are one of the safest forms of vision correction if you follow the proper care and wearing instructions provided by your eye doctor.  When you don‘t follow the instructions you were given the consequences may be dangerous.  If you are not following proper hygiene while caring for your contacts you could be damaging your eyes.

Below are some of the mistakes you could be making with your contact hygiene.  These maY sound harmless but have serious consequences.
  • Cleaning your lenses or case with water:  Cleaning your contacts with water can cause the lens to change shape, swell and stick to your eye.  This can lead to scratching the cornea, which can cause infections.  Wash your case with contact solution, wipe it out and let it air dry completely.

  • Topping off the old solution with new solution:  When you do this you are causing the solution to lose its effectiveness.  ALWAYS use new solution every day.

  • Not cleaning out your contact case after every use:  A layer of film will start to build up on the bottom and this could put your eyes at risk for infections.  After every use rinse out your case, wipe it and let it dry.

  • Using the same case over and over:  Cases should be replaced every 3 months.

  • Not washing your hands before handling the lenses:  When you don‘t wash your hands before touching your lens you are placing bacteria in your eye.
I have worn contacts for many years and I never knew you were not supposed to clean your lenses with water.  I also found out the hard way that filling your contact case with water (didn‘t have any solution on hand so water was the next best thing) can cause your contacts to stick to your eyes like a suction cup making them almost impossible to get out.  Now that I'm a little wiser, I have corrected my errors in my contact lens hygiene and I hope this helps you too!

Until next year… Have a safe, healthy and happy holiday!

Keeping Fit 2014: The Year In Review

Wow!  I cannot believe we are almost to 2015.  It seems like just yesterday I was writing an article for January 2014.  I hope that this year has been great to each and every one of you.  We have covered a lot of topics this year and I hope that you have learned something new, found a good tip or two and enjoyed reading about the topics we have covered.  Thank you to everyone who has submitted feedback.

We started off the year talking about my favorite exercise apparatus, the exercise ball, (Exercise Ball: An All Around Workout Tool For Both Men and Women, Jan2014), and how you can use it for anything from stretching to a complete workout.  On a side note, this is a GREAT gift idea for anyone and it is very inexpensive.

In February I touched on the importance of staying hydrated in cold weather just as you would in hot weather.  (Cold, Warm or Hot Weather, Hydration is still the key, FEB2014).  The important thing there is to make sure that you drink fluids regularly during your workout!  Remember that just because it is cold outside does not mean that you cannot get dehydrated.

March was another flu season and a bad one nonetheless.  It challenged my masculinity as I tried to use the “tough guy treatment” sweat it out.  Let‘s just say that…  ummm…  it did not work.  (Don‘t “Sweat It Out” This Flu Season, MAR2014).

April was a special segment for those of you dealing with flat feet.  (Have Flat Feet- You Can Work-out Without The Pain, APR2014).  I got some great feedback from some of you that have flat feet.  I hope that the arch supports worked for you!  I would really like to hear from you again and know if they helped.

As the weather warmed in May and June, I gave you some tips on staying cool while working out, (Water Workout Will Help You Stay Cool and Fit, May2014) and how adrenaline can hide the symptoms of dehydration.  (Adrenaline Can Mask Dehydration, June2014)

As summer peaked in July, I dug deep in my arChives of notes from my Athletic Training classes and presented you with an acronym called “R.I.C.E”.  This acronym is used as tool to help you treat your minor sports injuries. (RICE Is The Best Way To Treat Your Minor Sports Injuries, July2014).

So, let‘s test you. Whoever emails me and can correctly state what the "R.I.C.E." acronym stands for will be entered into a drawing to get either 2 Months Free (If you are a Savon Member) or a $10.00 Starbucks Gift Card.  Let me know which one you would like when you email me.  If you are a current member, please include your member ID number.  Good Luck!

August brought us to the topic of music and how your choice in music can influence your workout.  It is a proven fact that when you listen upbeat music you will workout harder and if you listen to slower music your workout will be slower.  (Your Music Choice Can Affect Your Workout, Aug2014)

September and October both consisted of me presenting my case and pleading with you all to not throw calisthenics out of your workout.  I think I presented a fair argument and won you all over with it.  Just remember that calisthenics will not only give you a workout, but they will condition you as well.  (Don‘t Throw Calisthenics Away Part I, Sept2014, Don‘t Throw Calisthenics Away Part II, Oct2014)

In November I wrapped my 2014 Keeping Fit Series by addressing our new workout recruits by giving you tips for getting through your first set of workouts.  (Surviving the First Workout, Nov2014). Remember to pace yourself, don‘t max out your set, stop when tired and stretch out before and after your workout.

As I officially wrap up 2014, I want to thank you all for reading.  I invite everyone to join me again in 2015 as we continue to embark on the endeavor of staying fit and healthy

Until next year, Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong and have a safe and wonderful holiday season!

Fun Facts:

Interesting Facts About Christmas We Bet You Didn't Know

  • Your Christmas tree is edible.  Well, unless it‘s made of plastic.  The bark of evergreen trees is not only edible, but is actually a pretty good source of Vitamin C.  Just don‘t eat the pinecones.

  • The average Christmas tree takes seven years to grow to a height of 6 to 7 feet… and is used for about two weeks.  That means, if you were born today, and a tree was planted today, you‘d be in second grade by the time that tree reached appropriate Christmas height!

  • Seven out of 10 dogs get Christmas presents from their owners.  I guess those other three-out-of-10 dogs shouldn‘t have been digging in the back yard.  Santa‘s watching!

  • Santa would have to visit roughly 1,300 homes per second to deliver presents just to the United States alone.  This just proves what I‘ve been trying to convince my granddaughters this whole time:  Santa really is magic.

  • Bing Crosby‘s “White Christmas” is the best-selling Christmas single of all time.  Not surprising that it beat out “Jingle Bells” -- that song doesn‘t actually mention Christmas once.

  • If you count all the gifts given in “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” you‘d get 364, which means a gift for every day of the year -- except Christmas, I guess.  If you ask me, I‘d say just give me the five golden rings and keep the lords a-leaping.

  • The traditions of trees, mistletoe and elves all stem from pagan roots.  In fact, a lot of Christmas traditions actually pre-date Christianity.  Same with Easter.  Look it up.

  • Finally, Humphrey Bogart and Sir Isaac Newton were both born on Christmas and famous funny men W.C. Fields and Charlie Chaplin both died on Christmas
