To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:

Eczema

Jourdin
Scratch, scratch, scratch…  This is a constant sound you will hear when someone is suffering from Eczema.

Eczema is the inflammation of the skin causing red, itchy, dry patches.  It can be found on all parts of the body but more commonly the face, inside the elbow, behind the knees and on the hands and feet.

The cause of Eczema is still unknown but Eczema affects mainly children and about 3% of adults.  Most people outgrow Eczema but some people continue to have symptoms throughout their life.  Eczema is not curable but can be managed with medical treatment and it is not contagious.

When someone is suffering from Eczema they will try just about anything to relieve the pain, here are some tips to treat damaged skin:

  • Avoid products with hidden chemicals – A lot of the over the counter lotions contain chemicals that have been proven to cause the same condition they claim to cure.

  • Restore the skins natural PH – Start looking at labels, use soaps that are closer to the skins natural PH of 5.5 - 6.5.  Most soaps, lotions and hair products are at 8-10 PH.

  • Avoid foods that cause inflammation – What you put in your body has a huge effect.  Avoid processed foods, fatty meats and sweets.

  • Nourish and hydrate the skin – Our skin needs vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids and enzymes.  Treat your skin to powerful products straight from the kitchen such as; Coconut oil, Aloe Vera, Avocado and Egg Whites.
I have personally suffered from extreme Eczema for the majority of my life during the fall and winter months.  Like I mentioned above you can either have it all over your body or in certain areas.  I had it from my stomach to my toes.  I think I tried every lotion and prescription medication they offered.  Nothing cured mine except for one thing which I found by accident at the tanning salon.  It was the tanning equipment itself.  After 2 days of using the tanner it was cleared up.

I wish I would have known about these tips years ago!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Keeping Fit 2016 Year In Review

Clayton (TR)
2016 is almost in the books and what a year it has been!  I hope that you accomplished at least some if not all of your workout goals.  This year, I can finally say that personally, I have.  I lost the weight that I set-out to lose and my workouts have been more consistent.  Honestly, I am surprised that the time has already come to do my annual review of what we have covered throughout the year.  I know I say it every year, but this year has really flown by!  So let‘s get started!

We opened the year by talking about creating a “Point of Emphasis” (Jan 2016).  This is a foundation for your workout plan for the year.  By setting a point of emphasis I was able to adjust my workout routines and accomplish my goals for this year.  Now is a good time to start thinking about what they will be for next year.

In February we addressed the differences between the Elliptical and the Treadmill and the advantages and disadvantages of both.  In March I declared that FitBit© won me over and I became a fan.  Update: I still have my “FitBit© Charge”, still wear it every day (and I did buy my mom a new one to replace the one I lost.)

In April and May, we talked about different workouts that you can do without using any weights.  We talked about leg workouts in April and upper body workouts in May.  Have you tried any of them?  Which one do you use the most?  For me, I use the calf raises and arm curls.

In June we addressed that never ending dilemma of using Weight Machines or Free Weights.  I still prefer the weight machines and at times will go to free weights, but ultimately it comes down to personal preference.  In July we discussed different ways to remind yourself to stay hydrated.  Which method do you use?  I still use the alarm on my Fitbit©, however I have asked Santa for a hydration pack this year.  Hopefully I am on the nice list!

In August I bragged about being able to swim the mighty Colorado River while addressing the workout you can get by doing some Counter Current Swimming.  The September challenge this year was to “Forget the Elevator and Take the Stairs”.  I am averaging 45 flights of stairs per day and that has helped me reach my goals for the year.  When you are out shopping at the malls this year, just remember to take the stairs instead of the elevator.  It‘ll make a huge difference in terms of fitness.

In October I was amazed by the concept of bungie swimming.  As a swimmer, this is definitely something I still want to try.  Have any of you had the chance to give it shot yet?  We wrapped up the 2016 Keeping Fit article in November with an important formula given to me by a Doctor friend of mine.  Rest, Then Rehab = Recovery.  Update: My elbow is doing much better but I still have pain from time to time.  I did reinjure it swinging a hammer a few weeks ago but I am now officially back into the “Rehab” process and it is getting better every day.

As we close out 2016, it is my hope that you were each able to take something out of the 11 articles I wrote this year and use it to advance your personal goals.  The series that I am planning for 2017 will continue along these lines.  If you missed any of these articles, please visit our Newsletter Archives in the Member Center of our website.

Have a safe and wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Until 2017: Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!

Here’s Your Answer

Questions From Our Members

D. Rosenburg of Houston, Texas asks:

“Prior to making an appointment with one of your providers, I checked them out for complaints with the dental board.  This particular dentist (I'm not going to mention their name), had 3 complaints.  Does Savon know about these complaints and if so, why is the dentist on your plan?”

Savon’s Answer

Unless a complaint is recent (within the last 90 days), the answer is YES we do know about any complaint that any of our network providers have.

The reason that we have them on our plan is the severity of their complaints does not raise an issue with our credentialing department staff one of which is a retired dentist.

The bottom line is no dentist is going to be able to please everyone they treat.  Some patients file a complaint with the board without even trying to resolve the problem with the doctor.  Some patients are always looking for anything that they can get for free.

That being said, we check all of our network providers for complaints every four months.  If we determine a complaint is serious enough, we take the proper actions with the most drastic being revocation of their certification with Savon and removal from the plan.

From Our C.E.O. To You

A Year End Message To Our Members

Clay
First off, I would like to thank our established members for the continued trust that you have placed in our plan.  I would also like to welcome all the new members that have joined us this year.

2016 has truly been a historic year.  We watched a bitter Presidential campaign between the first Woman nominated by a major party and a business man with no military or political experience.  No it is time to put the poetical differences aside, become united, pray for the new administration and the health and well-being of our great Nation.

This season finds a lot of people that can use some help.  Savon supports the efforts of the Salvation Army but there are also a host of other fantastic organizations doing the same work.  If you have the ability to donate, these charities would greatly appreciate your help.

From all of us at Savon, however you celebrate it, have a safe and happy holiday season.  For those of you that believe as I do…  Merry Christmas.

Finally, to everyone, I personally wish you a healthy, prosperous and healthy 2017.
