Quote Of The Month:  "I got a Valentine's Day card from my girl.  It said, 'Take my heart!  Take my arms!  Take my lips!'  Which is just like her.  Keeping the best part for herself."  (Robert Orben - comedy writer 1927-present)

Beautify Your Skin And Hair

Ladies, we all want to have the perfect skin and hair.  I‘m sure you have tried many home beauty techniques to achieve that perfect look.

You may want to add this odd ingredient to your beauty routine:  Beer.  Yes, I said beer!

Beer has a very low pH which helps tighten hair follicles and removes dirt and grease from the hair.  The froth in the beer contains yeast and that helps fight acne.  Yeast also contains vitamin B, proteins, iron, magnesium and potassium.

Here are a few ways to incorporate beer into your beauty routine:

  1. Beer and strawberry face scrub:
    Ingredients:
    • 2-3 strawberries
    • Few drops of beer
    Directions:
    • Mash the strawberries and add a few drops of beer until it makes a paste.
    • Rub paste onto your face and let it dry for about 15-20 minutes.
    • Wash off.

  2. Beer bubble bath:
    Ingredients:
    • Olive-oil based soap
    • Beer (any preference)
    Directions:
    • Mix soap and beer and add it to running bath water.
    • Soak for as long as you would like - (this will make skin feel soft and smooth).

  3. Beer rinse for hair:
    (Recommended once a month)
    Ingredients:
    • 1 oz distilled water
    • 1 oz beer
    • 2 tsp. apple cider vinegar
    • 7 drops (favorite scent) essential oil
    Directions:
    • Mix ingredients together.
    • Shampoo and rinse hair.
    • Pour mixture over hair and work through.
    • Rinse.
As you can see, beer is good for more than just drinking.  Try it and realize the benefits of this odd ingredient!

Easy Skillet Mac & Cheese

Ingredients

  • 3 tbsp Butter or Margarine
  • ¼ cup finely sliced green onions
  • 1/2 cup bell pepper (any color variety)
  • 1 tbsp parsley, chopped
  • 1 cup rotini pasta
  • 1 cup water (extra water if needed up to 1/4 cup)
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup shredded mozzerella cheese
  • ¼ cup milk or light cream

Melt the butter in a skillet.  Add onion, pepper, water and macaroni, bring to a boil.  Cover and cook for 10-12 minutes or until macaroni is tender.

Stir in the cheeses, milk or cream and add salt and pepper to taste.  Stir in the parsley last, just prior to serving.

For added taste, you can add diced ham or bacon to this dish or, for a mexican twist, add a can of Rotel diced tomatoes.

This entire dish can be done in less than 30 minutes, which makes it a great meal for something quick during the work week!

Cold, Warm Or Hot Weather: Hydration Is Still The Key!

Whether you are playing a sport, working out in a gym or exercising on your own, staying hydrated is extremely important.

Now, if I was writing this article in July, I am sure that a lot of you would be saying “tell me something I didn‘t know”.  However, I am writing this in February for a specific reason.

It is a common misconception in the land of sports and exercise that dehydration can only occur during the hot summer months.  That is not true at all.  More focus is put on dehydration in the hotter months because the heat can accelerate the onset the dehydration and increase the chance of heat related illness.  However, in the colder weather the chances of becoming dehydrated actually increase.

A study done by the University of New Hampshire stated that “colder weather increases the chance of dehydration because people just do not feel thirsty when the weather is cold”.  It goes on to say “When they do not feel thirsty, they do not drink as much fluids and this can lead to dehydration.”

This actually makes sense when you think about it.  Let‘s say you are out for your morning run.  In the summer time you are most likely wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt or tank top.  In the winter time you are most likely wearing pants, a shirt and sweater or jacket.  Your body is working harder with the weight from the extra clothing also your sweat will evaporate quickly in the colder air.  Although you may not feel thirsty, you are losing just as much, if not more, fluids from your body as you would in the hot summer months.

The National Athletic Training Association (NATA) recommends the following for staying hydrated:
  1. Drink at least 16oz of fluid within 1 hour before your activity (water, juice or sports drink)

  2. Drink up to 4-8oz more every 15-20 minutes during the activity (regardless if you feel like you need it or not)

  3. Rest and drink fluid slowly and/or seek medical attention if any of the following occur: chills, dizziness, dry mouth, headaches, thirst or weakness.
Until next time, Stay Hydrated and Stay Healthy!
