Are Cell Phones Affecting Our Health?

Cell Phones are an addiction for many people ranging from children to elders.  They even have a name for it, Nomophobia, which is “the fear of being out of mobile phone contact.”

Cell phones present a hazard for people who cannot break away from constant mobile contact.  The majority of people have replaced traditional social skills with texting and social media.

But when it comes to our health, it turns out these handy devices are not as convenient as we thought.
  • Cell Phones and cancer:  Cell Phones emit radiofrequency energy, which can be absorbed by tissues closest to where the phone is held.  Because cell phones are usually held near the head when being used, the main concern has been whether it causes or contributes to tumors in the head and neck area.  A few studies have also looked for possible links to other cancers suck as skin, breast and testicular cancer.  The cell phone-cancer study continues with no conclusion in sight.

  • Vision Problems:  Staring at your phone screen can cause problems with your vision later in life.  Cell phone screens are much smaller than computer screens (not so much anymore!) and TVs so you are more likely to squint and strain your eyes to read messages.  You may not realize you‘re hurting your vision but you are.

  • Chronic pain:  Cell phones require constant use of your hands.  Responding to messages all day, every day can cause pain and inflammation of your joints.  You may also develop “text neck” which is caused by stress and pressure on the neck from messaging and browsing the web.

  • Spreading of bacteria:  Cell phones follow us everywhere and 75 percent of Americans take their phones to the bathroom.  Fecal matter can spread E-coli which can cause many health problems.
Without a doubt cell phones have dramatically changed the way we communicate with others and how we live our lives.  In the long run are our cell phones really more important than our health?

Tips For Proper Stretching

Stretching is an essential part of your pre and post workout routine, or it least it should be.  There are many resources available that will teach you how to stretch out just about any muscle in your body.  However, I have not found much regarding the proper way to stretch out.  There are many factors that play into the effectiveness of your stretch. Here are some things to keep in mind when stretching.
  • Stretch out your whole body, every time:  Just because you are working out your legs that day, does not mean that you only have to stretch out your legs.  Not stretching out your whole body could cause injury to a part that you do not even think that you are working out.  The human body‘s muscular system is very complicated.  Any action that you do uses a lot more muscles than you might think.  Stretching out your whole body will ensure that every one of them is ready to go for your workout.
  • Stretch Head to Toes or Toes To Head:  It really makes no difference which end of your body that you start with.  That is a personal preference.  Whichever one you choose, work up or down from there.  This will ensure that you are stretching out your whole body and not missing any muscles.  When you jump from hamstring to biceps, to quadriceps and to shoulders you can easily forget to stretch out one of them.  Also, it will give you the false sense of being stretched out and the less obvious muscles will be overlooked.  That makes them susceptible to injury.

  • Stretch to your range of motion:  A good point of reference when stretching is to stretch the muscle until you feel the stretch and then go just a little past that.  If it is hurting, then you have gone too far.  If you cannot feel the stretch then you have not gone far enough.  Going too far can cause hyperextension and damage the muscle tissue.

  • Hold each stretch for 20-30 seconds:  Contrary to popular belief, you can over stretch and under stretch.  Holding a stretch for under 20 seconds won‘t allow the muscle fibers and tissue to lengthen.  Stretching for too long can cause hyperextension or injure the muscle tissue.

  • Breathe while stretching:  Many people tend to hold their breath while stretching, which is understandable because often the position you are in when you are stretching makes it tough to breathe.  However, breathing improves circulation, relieves tension, provides oxygen to your muscles and increases your range of motion and flexibility.  If you hold your breath, you will deprive your muscles of oxygen and you will be tenser and will not get a good stretch on the muscle.  This will lower your flexibility and increase your chance of an injury.
These 5 steps used before and after your work out will help reduce your chances of getting a pulled or strained muscle and help you reach your work-out goals.  For information on which stretch technique should be used to stretch-out, you should consult your doctor, trainer or coach.  It can vary from sport to sport and athlete to athlete.  Whichever technique they advise, these 5 steps should still be applied to ensure that you properly stretched out.

Until next time, Stay Healthy, Stay Fit, Stay Strong!
