Winter Itch
|
You can run but you can´t hide from dry winter skin!
Although dry skin can be a problem any time of the year and there are many different causes of dry skin, the most common is due to low humidity. This prevents the skin from taking in enough moisture. In fact, dry and itchy skin often appears in colder weather, and many people refer to this condition as the “Winter Itch.”
Skin is made up of several layers of cells that are partially protected from dehydration by an insulating blanket of oil. When the humidity drops, as it does in many places during the winter, the skin has less of a chance to moisturize itself. As a result, the skin becomes dehydrated.
Fortunately, there are many simple things a person can do on their own to combat “winter itch”, such as:
|
- Take shorter showers or baths while using lukewarm water.
- Take fewer showers or baths - if possible (shower every other day)
- Use a type of soap that has a moisturizer in it.
- Pat the body dry, don´t wipe off the water.
- Moisturize. It´s recommended to moisturize right after bathing and at least twice a day.
- Avoid moisturizers that contain fragrances and alcohol.
- If your body isn´t responding to lotions or creams, try over the counter ointments.
If your skin begins to crack or become red and inflamed, it may be time to see a dermatologist. They will be able to prescribe a medication such as a topical steroid. Thankfully the “winter itch” usually disappears in the spring!!

Grandma´s Kitchen With Grandma C.:
Simple Low Carb Lemon Mousse
|
What makes this dessert so special is that it has only 2 ingredients!
- 1 pint heavy whipping cream
- 1 pkg (1 oz) sugar free lemon pudding mix
With an electric mixer, beat until light and fluffy. Chill and serve!
That´s all there is to it! This dessert is especially rich, and very low carb.
For those who prefer a more sugary treat, simply use regular pudding mix.
|
I personally like the Lemon flavor but you can use any flavor of Jello pudding; chocolate, vanilla, banana… and you can garnish it with vanilla wafers or graham crackers, whatever you´d like!
Also, if you´d like something without so much heavy cream, you can use half and half cream instead, or simply use half cream and half milk. This recipe makes about 6 servings.
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Artisan Family Dentistry |
|
Our spotlight for February goes to the city of Glendale, Arizona and shines on Artisan Family Dentistry
Dr. Jeremy Carson, DMD, received his dental degree from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Carson prefers to offer patients options when it comes to their dental care, realizing that not all patients have the same goals for their teeth, or financial abilities to meet their dental needs.
For Patients with Gum Disease, Dr. Carson is a licensed provider of LANAP (Laser Periodontal Therapy) surgery using the Periolase MVP-7 Nd:YAG laser. LANAP is a revolutionary new laser procedure offered as an alternative to traditional surgical methods of treating gum disease. With LANAP, we are now able to effectively control gum disease and even reverse some of its harmful effects to the teeth and surrounding bone.

Here´s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
J. Halstrom of Houston, Texas asks:
“I missed a dental appointment and was charged over $250.00 for missing it. The office won´t schedule a new appointment until the fee is paid. I feel that this is unfair and want to know what Savon is going to do about it. A $250.00 fee for missing a dental appointment is plain stupid.”
Savon’s Answer
The simple answer is that there is nothing Savon can do about it.
We checked the fee schedule for your state and it appears that the dental office had set aside an hour for your appointment. That facility only has 2 operatories so time is even more critical to them than it may be to a larger facility.
When you are a “no show” for an appointment, the time that was allocated for you becomes “dead time” because the facility does not have the opportunity to reschedule another patient into that time slot and to make matters worse for the facility is the expenses continue (i.e.; labor, utilities, etc.).
Missed appointments “no shows” are a real concern to the dental office and for Savon. If you need to cancel an appointment please make sure that you give the dental office at least 24 hours notice. With proper notice the office has the time to move appointments around and fill up the vacant time slot and you don´t get charged that“stupid fee”.
The most important thing to remember is to do your best to keep your appointments and if you can´t, give the dental office plenty of notice (at least 24 hours).

Why Women Suffer More from Dry Eye-And How They Can Find Relief
A direct reprint from News USA via Copyright Free Content
|
More than 16 million Americans report that they suffer from a condition called dry eye, and the total number may be as high as 30 million. Women are twice as likely as men to endure this often-painful condition, with symptoms including irritated, scratchy, or burning eyes, a feeling of something in the eyes, excess watering, and blurred vision.
Why is dry eye more common in women? One reason is that computer use, makeup and contact lens wear can exacerbate the condition, explains John D. Sheppard, M.D., M.M.Sc., President of Virginia Eye Consultants.
The hormonal changes associated with menopause and pregnancy may also adversely affect the eyes and the incidence of dry eye rises with age. But now, women can find relief from these symptoms, thanks to an eyelid hygiene product from NovaBay Pharmaceuticals (NYSE MKT:NBY) called Avenova.
|
A key root cause of many cases of dry eye is the dense population of bacteria growing on the eyelids and lashes. “These bacteria can block glands in the eyelids that produce an oil that keeps our tear film from evaporating,” Dr. Sheppard explains. “Without enough oil, the eyes dry up and become painful.” The bacteria also release toxins that cause inflammation and produce an enzyme that compromises this crucial oil layer.
First, Dr. Sheppard and his colleagues are directly fighting the bacterial overpopulation using Avenova ocular eyelid spray. The key ingredient in Avenova is Neutrox, a pure 0.01 percent formulation of hypochlorous acid, a substance that is naturally made by our human white blood cells to fight microbial invaders. “Avenova does an excellent job removing the excess harmful bacteria,” says Dr. Sheppard. “Moreover, it directly inactivates the lipase enzyme that breaks up our vital oil.”
Dr. Sheppard and his colleagues also manage dry eye by using oral Omega 3 and essential fatty acid supplements to help control inflammation. These natural, organic and extremely safe approaches are bringing huge improvements for Dr. Sheppard´s own patients. “Women may no longer need to suffer from this often-painful condition.”
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
