Snoring
Hear that? It‘s the sound of someone sawing Logs! Not really, but I‘m sure you have heard someone snore in your lifetime and it can be quite a nuisance.
Snoring is a common condition that can affect both genders, although it‘s more frequent in men and those who are overweight. Snoring also becomes more serious as people age.
Snoring occurs when the flow of air through the mouth and nose is physically obstructed.
Air flow can be obstructed by one or a combination of factors such as:
|
- Obstructed nasal airways – This can be due to allergy season, sinus infections or you may have a deviated septum.
- Poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue – the muscles become too relaxed which allows them to collapse and fall onto the airway. This can result from taking sleeping pills or drinking alcohol.
- Bulky throat tissue – This is caused by being overweight.
Simple snoring can often be treated with these at home remedies:
- Adjusting your position – Sleeping on your back causes you to snore more, so try sleeping on your side.
- Play with pillows – Sleep with a body pillow between your legs, this helps align the spine and makes side sleeping more comfortable. If you still can‘t sleep on your side put a pillow under your shoulders and one under your neck to prop you up, this might help keep the throat open.
- Avoid alcohol – Do not drink alcohol four hours before you head to bed. Alcohol relaxes the muscles so snoring becomes worse than what it all ready is.
- Open your nose – Snoring isn‘t always due to the loose muscles in the throat, it may be due to clogged or narrow nasal passages. Try using the Breath Right® strips.
- Belt it out – Sing! Singing helps strengthen throat muscles.
If snoring is left untreated you may be at risk for seRious health problems such as sleep apnea, which has problems of its own. Some of these problems may include breathing interruptions, light sleeping, frequently waking up and strain on the heart. This means your brain and the rest of your body may not get enough oxygen.

Savory Bread Pudding
Ingredients
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 6 eggs, beaten
- 2 cups Milk
- 1 tbsp butter, melted
- 2 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 3½ cups of hard crusted bread, i.e. baguette or italian bread
- 1 cup raisins
|
Topping
- 1 small pkg instant vanilla pudding mix
Instructions
In preparation, cube the bread and let it sit out on a cookie sheet overnight, or, a quicker method is to let it sit in a warm oven for about 1 hour to dry it out.
Grease a 9 x 13 baking dish. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Place bread crumbs in greased baking dish. Disperse raisins evenly over the top of the bread crumbs.
Mix sugar, cinnamon, beaten eggs, milk and vanilla in mixing bowl. Add melted butter, stir. Pour mixture over the cubed bread.
(Liquid may not come all the way to the top but it will expand during cooking.) Sprinkle with brown sugar.
Bake 45 minutes or until set. Remove to a cooling rack.
Topping
Poke approximately 16 holes (spaced evenly) in the warm bread pudding with the handle of a wooden spoon.
Mix the vanilla pudding according to package directions except add in 2/3 cup extra milk.
Pour the pudding mixture over the top letting the pudding seep into the holes.
Serve warm with whipped cream on top!
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

New Year‘s Resolution: A Work-Out Plan
Welcome to 2015! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. The time has come to make those New Year‘s Resolutions; that dreaded list of things that you would like to accomplish this year. I don‘t know about you, but I have a few more carry over items from 2014 than I would like to have.
Regardless of your resolutions, a plan is a must! Working out is no exception to that rule.
I hear a lot of people say “I am going to hit the gym more” or “I want to get more fit this year”. Those are fantaStic goals, but how do you plan on doing it?
Do you have a plan for working out that extends past the point of going to the gym more, riding a bike more or walking more? If not, then chances are good that you will fall short of your work-out goals and it will be on your carry-over list for next year.
|
So let‘s get to planning! Here are some ideas to help you lay out a plan. Just ask yourself these questions:
- How often do I want to work out? – Whether it is 2, 3 or 4 days a week, knowing how many times you want to work out will help you plan the routine and gain consistency needed for an effective work-out.
- When do I want to work out? - Believe it or not, this is very important. If you are not a morning person, the 5am work-out is not for you. Make sure you pick a time that you feel energetic and driven to give it your full effort.
- What do I want from my work out? - The end result is important. This is the foundation for what routine is going to work best for you. Whether it is weight loss, muscle gain or rock hard abs, knowing what you want will help you plan the steps and routine to get there.
- What routine will I do each day? – Planning a routine saves you time in the gym and allows you to mAke the most of your time. It takes away from the indecisiveness of choosing between the treadmill and the free weights. Also, laying out a routine will help you plan for a proportionate work-out. A good mix of legs, arms, chest and cardio is always the most effective way to work-out and reach your goals.
- How will I track my progress? – Tracking your progress is often overlooked. The feeling that you had a good work-out, or just knowing you did 10 more sit-ups than last time is great but you will never truly know how far you have come unless you track your progress. There are many tools to track your progress such as creating your own spreadsheet. Some gyms have progress tracking cards available that you can keep on file there or you can work with a personal trainer who can keep a progress chart for you. Also, you guessed it, there are apps for that! There are multiple apps to help you plan your routine and track your progress.
A plan is a must as you embark on the endeavor of your 2015 work-out goals.
Until next month, Happy Planning, Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!
