Flossing VS. The Waterpik

This month‘s topic comes to us via the dental hygiene department. Hygienists are often asked by patients if they have to floss if they use a waterpik daily. The answer came plain and simple. YES!

Standard floss is the most effective tool for cleaning the tight spaces between your teeth. By scraping the floss up and down the sides of your teeth, food particles and sticky plaque caused by bacteria is removed, thus preventing a build up of calculus. Brushing alone is not sufficient enough to remove the plaque from in between your teeth.

The Waterpik is a very popular oral irrigator that works by allowing the user to direct a stream of water or irrigating solution in between the tight spaces of your teeth.

It is a very useful aid in keeping the gums and teeth healthy by rinsing out food and bacteria from between the teeth and increasing the oxygen concentration making it harder for destructive bacteria to grow. It is NOT a replacement for flossing, but a good addition to your oral care regimen.

Now don‘t get me wrong, a waterpik has its absolute advantages. Dentists and Hygienists are known to recommended the use of a waterpik to patients who are are periodontally compromised, have crown and bridge work, braces and those with various maladies that are known to increase chances of gum disease.

For those of you who aren‘t so forthright with your flossing, don‘t ditch your pik…Waterpik that is. Daily use of your Waterpik is definitely encouraged and better than not flossing at all. As my hygienist, Autumn Heller, RDH told me, “ Brush first, floss second. Waterpiks help, but NOTHING replaces flossing!”

Feng Shui with Shona Frasier:

Feng Shui with Shona Frasier!
An Introduction to Feng Shui

Have you ever gone into some businesses and notice that certain items are placed similarly? Maybe a fountain, plant, or a fish tank is placed in this business? This placement of items is called Feng Shui. Feng Shui is an ancient Asian art to help promote your health, wealth and family luck (we definitely could use some during these economic times). Many Asian business owners use this art to increase their business, by balancing their energy. Not only is this used at their business but at their homes as well. I know it sounds silly, but in actuality this philosophy has been around for thousands of years.

Most people know that getting rid of clutter will make you feel better at work or at home. If you know this, then you already know the first thing about Feng Shui. Believe it or not, getting rid of clutter is the start of balancing your Chi energy. I found going through my house and throwing away items that were broken helped me to get rid of some clutter right away.

Anything that is not needed or cared about in the house or office is basically clutter. That does not mean, we throw away nice pictures, special mementos or even some of our figures we love and care about. It means items that are around for no particular reason anymore: broken, junk, meaningless items.

Of course there is more to Feng Shui than just placement of items and getting rid of clutter, but don‘t be alarmed, it may sound difficult but that‘s what I am here for. Over the next few months, I will be giving you basic tips on how to do the very basic Feng Shui. These tips will help you in your health, career and family life. Looking forward to seeing ya'll next month!

To your health:

FDA Votes on Pulling Acetaminophen Products

Voting by an advisory panel has already began on recommendations to either lower the recommended dosage of Acetaminophen in certain products, or to remove those products from the shelves all together.

Acetaminophen is a drug commonly used to treat pain and fever. It is found in many over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, Ny Quill, and various other combination medications. However, according to the FDA, Acetaminophen overdoses have been liked to 26,000 hospitalizations and 458 deaths in the 1990‘s. Another study conducted by the Centers for Disease and Control estimated that there are roughly 1600 acute liver failures each year with Acetaminophen being the likely cause.

The subject is still in voting, however certain trade organizations are arguing, claiming that over-the-counter combination drugs are responsible for only a small portion of Acetaminophen overdoses. The advisory panel is currently weighing 9 different options which will be narrowed down to one, and then submitted to the FDA for it‘s final decision.

A question from a member:

Question:  I received a sticker with my renewal information… What‘s this for?

Savon's Answer:

In an effort to cut back material usage and waste, we have done away with the distribution of renewal membership cards. In it‘s place, we have issued a renewal sticker to be placed over the “year box” on your current membership card (just like the tabs on your license plate). If you have received a sticker and do not have a membership card, simply contact us at 1-800-809-3494 and we will send you one immediately.
