They‘re Not Bumps, They‘re Tori!
1 out of every 20 dental patients are familiar with those little bony swellings on inside of the floor of their mouth called mamdibular tori. Some experience them on the roof of their mouth as well and they are known as palatal tori. These bony swellings or outcroppings that develop in the mouth are not unusual. They come in many shapes, sizes and positions. They usually can be found along the tongue side of your lower jaw or the middle of the roof of your mouth.
Tori are considered to a developmental anomaly, however they usually begin to appear as adults and continue growing slowly through life. Tori have been commonly found in patients with bruxism and clenching problems. Mostly common in females, tori have been reported in children as well.
The good news about tori is they are harmless. Aside from needing a little extra care from your dental assistant when placing xray films, tori are just what they look like. A lumpy bone growth. Some patients who are considering dentures or partials are almost definitely candidates for having them removed.

Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is the growth of cells that invade and cause damage to the tissue it surrounds. It often appears as a growth or sore that does not go away. Oral cancer can be located on the lip, tongue, check, floor of mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, pharynx. Some ways to determine oral cancer are patches in the mouth that are white, red, or mixture of both. Sores that will not heal, bleeding in the mouth, pain when swallowing, loose teeth, and a lump in the neck. Anyone with these symptoms should consult a doctor or a dentist.
Treatments for oral cancer are the same for other types of cancer. Surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. Proper treatment is solely dependant on what stage the cancer is at. Surgery is commonly used for oral cancer this is usually done with a biopsy to remove the cancer. Most people who are diagnosed with oral cancer are over the age of fifty years old. There is no single cause of oral cancer, but some factors increase oral cancer are, smoking or chewing tobacco, alcohol, also sun exposure to lips.

Sick From Vacation?
It that time of year, when most individuals, couples and families get out of town. With the lure of tropical beachy places, cabins in the woods, boating on lakes etc... why worry about a thing…unless that thing turns out to be a bug, a flu bug. It‘s common for people to have sensitivities to germs and viruses they are unaccustomed to, and these sometime violent maladies aren‘t afraid to bite.
I found over the years that Airborne, Zycam and a pint of hand sanitizer are three travel MUSTS when heading out of town with my little ones. Hand sanitizer helps cut down on the amount of germs coming in contact with your mouth or nose, Airborne is taken at the beginning of a vacation to stave off any potential germs looking for a ride along, and Zycam helps cut those nasty side effects short. If you have questions about what you should take to protect yourself from illness when on vacation, contact your physician for suggestions.
Have a safe, healthy and happy summer!

A question from a member:
Question:
I received a quote from my dentist and went for a second opinion and it was different. Why?
Savon's Answer:
It is a common misconception that every dentist is going to charge the exact same price for what you need done. What most people don‘t realize is that every dentist is going to have a different opinion of what they think you need to have done. One dentist may say you need a filling. Another might think you actually need a crown. If they both think you need the exact kind of crown, then the prices should be exactly the same (lab fees will vary). The prices listed on the fee schedule are fixed and our Network Preferred Providers are contractually bound to it.
It‘s the difference in the diagnosis that causes the fees to vary.

Insurance Insight - An Indepth Look At Medical Insurance - Part 2
Contrary To Popular Belief...
“Carriers are always looking for reasons to deny applicants!”
If they were, they would not be in business. Carriers are looking for reasons TO cover applicants, so they HAVE a business, but there are only so many medical negatives a person can have before a carrier cannot safely assume the risk. Many of the questions asked on an application and answered YES will result in neither a decline or an exclusion – but the carrier wants an overall picture. Sometimes, one question answered YES can result in a decline of coverage altogether. Five answered YES may not bother the carrier at all.
Insurance is about risk – jut like home-owner‘s or auto insurance. You cannot call your Allstate or State Farm agent while your house is burning or two minutes after you broad-sided a truck on the freeway and expect them to sign you up and cover the costs.
