Keeping Children Active during Summer Break

Schools out!  No more formal routines, homework, or even school sports.

Children become super lazy during summer vacation; this is the time where they sit in front of a television or computer all day, every day.  Studies have shown that kids are more likely to experience unhealthy weight gain over summer break.

We all know trying to get your children to exercise can be difficult, but if you follow these simple tips you will get them moving in no time.

  • Limiting usage - Limit the time of your child‘s passive activities (ie; computer, television, and phone.)  Along with the new time constraint incorporate some physical activity, such as do jumping jacks during a commercial break.

  • Family Affair – Have a family exercise night, whether it's a quick walk after dinner, or a work out video inside.  Great way for family bonding and everyone get some exercise.

  • Camps - Check out free day camps.  Many communities offer free day camps during the summer break. This is a great way keep your kids active, and social.

  • Involve friends – Let your child have a friend/friends come over for a few hours to play.  There are so many great games they can play outside with each other (ie; hide and seek, kick the can and even kick ball) this is also a way to get them out of the house and for them to get some fresh air.
Regular physical activity can produce long term health benefits.  People of all ages, shapes, sizes and abilities can benefit from being physically active.  Health benefits of being active include; stronger bones, lower blood pressure, more mobile, healthier heart and lungs and exercising can help reduce the risk of diabetes and some cancers.

Remember, School‘s out… Exercise is in!

Simple Crock Pot Thai Chicken

Ingredients

  • 1½ lbs boneless skinless chicken breast
  • 1 pkg fresh snow peas*(optional)
  • 1 can water chestnuts
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • ⅓ cup chicken broth
  • ¼ cup soy sauce
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter

Cut chicken into 1 inch slices and place in the bottom of crock pot.  Add peanut butter in dollops on top of chicken.  Add onions.  Add chicken broth, soy sauce, ground cumin and water chestnuts.  Stir the mixture in the crock pot with a wooden spoon until it is somewhat mixed.

Note:  The peanut butter will not mix well but it will cook down during the process.

Add snow peas and red bell pepper to the top of the mixture.  Squeeze the lime juice over everything before you put the lid on the crock pot.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Cook for about 4 hours on high, or 5-6 hours on low**.

Serve over rice or noodles.  Serves 4 people.

*You can substitute carrots for the snow peas, or add them both for extra color and flavor to this dish.

**I made this recipe and cooked it for 6 hours on low…  the chicken came out a little dry so you may want to reduce the time.

Overall, this was a very tasty dish!

Coping With Anxiety Disorder

Anxiety is a problem that affects people of all ages.  Experiencing anxiety is something we can all expect to a certain degree in our lives, but for some it is an overwhelming, debilitating disorder that completely overtakes and disrupts their lifestyle.  It can be difficult to get a clear diagnosis because there are such a wide variety of symptoms associated with the disorder… no one case is exactly the same.  There are many types and also different levels of anxiety disorders.  This is what makes finding a way to cope with this disorder such a difficult process.

The following is a list of common symptoms associated with anxiety disorder.  It is by no means a complete list, and there may be symptoms that you or a loved one are having that do not appear on this list.  It is worth checking out, however, if you have some of these common symptoms.

  • Constant worrying about small things

  • Constant feeling of being on edge

  • Irritability

  • Feeling of impending doom

  • Sleep disorder (either too much or too little sleep)

  • Brain fog

  • Obsession with issues, big or small

  • Racing thoughts

  • Muscle aches and pains

  • Sensation of panic with rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath

  • Intestinal distress

  • Sweating
In children, the disorder may manifest in different ways.  They may lack confidence and need extra reassurance about their schoolwork, projects or performance in sports.  They may obsess over their work and feel the need to completely redo it if it isn‘t perfect the first time.  They may have unnatural fears about weather events or other catastrophic events.

Anxiety is easiest to treat when it is diagnosed early.  It will not generally go away on it‘s own and the symptoms tend to worsen over time, therefore it is essential that you seek medical treatment if you think you may have this disorder.  That said, there are things you can do for yourself that can help.  Eat a healthy diet, avoid sugar and fatty foods.  Exercise daily.  Avoid alcohol.  Try relaxation techniques such as meditation or yoga.  There are support groups available!  A proactive approach combined with good medical care can help you to get back to the lifestyle that you are meant to live.  Don‘t hesitate!

The above health material is provided as an information service.  It should not be used for diagnostic purposes nor is it intended to take the place of the important relationship between you and your doctor.

Marketing Tips From Our Marketing Department With Clayton III

Clayton (TR)

Marketing:  Pick Your Battleground

“Right Church, Wrong Pew”, “Right War, Wrong Warzone” no matter how you say it, the message is there.

You are running a marketing campaign that is not working.  Day after day my phone rings with a “marketing consultant” that wants to “help” me increase my website traffic, make my phone ring, increase my sales and ultimately give me a 300% return on my investment.  Word of advise: Don‘t Fall For It!  Don‘t get me wrong, some of them are actual marketing consultants and can help you, but most of them are sales people trying to meet their monthly quota.

When I talk to them, I test them.  I start asking questions about our company to see if they have done any homework.  When they can‘t answer them, I ask how they can help market a company that they know nothing about.  That will usually get me removed from their call list rather quickly.  Here are a couple of tips to make sure that you are not agreeing to market through a money pit:

  1. Check out the company.  Don‘t just look at their website.  I could design a website that can make someone look like they are next in line for papacy if I wanted to.  Look around the internet, do your homework.  If they are as effective as they claim to be, someone, somewhere will have written about them.

  2. Listen for “key things” that they are promising:

    • “First on Google, Bing, Yahoo.”  There is no guarantee that any company besides Google, Bing and Yahoo can get you a first place listing.  These rankings are created with an algorithm that is as complex as NASA Shuttle launch codes, if not more, and it changes frequently.  Furthermore, some places will tell you that they can get you listed first, but really it is a listing that you have on their website which is towards the top in searches.  Don‘t waste your money.

    • “You Only Pay Them When Your Page Is Clicked On:"  Sounds good right?  Really… no.  This is called pay-per-click.  First of all, if you do not sell something on your website to where a customer can actually purchase it when they go there, then pay per click is worthless to you.  If you do sell something, it can be worthwhile IF you find the right company to guide you.  My advice, if you want to go this route, seek out a reputable marketing company that suits your needs.
Marketing is BIG investment.  You need to pick your battles.  Just because something sounds good and the deal the guy is offering you ends as soon as you hang up the phone, does not mean it is going to work.  Be mindful of who you are engaging with and where you delegate your money.  A good measuring tool is the “3 Month Rule”.  Within 3 months of running a marketing campaign, you should have a return on your investment or be making progress in that direction.  If you haven‘t, you may need to try another pew or warzone.
