In a pan over medium heat, toast peanuts until golden bRown, about 5 minutes. Add mustard seed and shake pan another minute or so while mustard seeds pop. Remove from heat and set aside. Brown the onion. Add turmeric, curry leaves and lemon zest with a tbsp or so of water if needed to help blend the spices. Mix the cooled rice with the onion mixture. Stir in black beans. Sprinkle in the lemon juice 1 tbsp at a time and toss, tasting as you go. (Some prefer less tartness than others, so feel free to stop at 1 tbsp.) Top with the toasted peanuts and mustard seeds. Enjoy! And remember, if it looks good, eat it!! If you have a recipe that you would like to share with Grandma C., drop her an email by clicking here. Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker
Ice: Notice that this is ICE, not HEAT and not ICY-HOT (Such as FlexAll454). At this point, Ice is what is what is needed. Ice will reduce swelling, numb the injured area and start the healing process. Icing an injury can be tricky. There are many ways to ice down an area of your body and everyone will tell you how to do it differently. Some suggest ice packs wrapped in a towel and others will suggest a small bag of ice placed directly on the skin of the injured area. Personally I prefer the ice placed directly on the skin. It is up to you and what you can handle. I also recommend a 15-10 1 hour cycle. 15 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 4 times so that it is iced for an hour. Repeat the process no more that 2x per day. On a side note, in case some of you are wondEring why you don‘t want heat or icy-hot: The injured area is inflamed. Heat increases inflammation and causes the injury to swell-up. Until the swelling is reduced, you will not be able determine the true seriousness of the injury. Icy-Hot (such as FlexAll454), works really well overall, just not at this point. These types of creams are better used after the RICE formula. Icy-hot creams work by soaking through your skin to sooth the injured area. When the injured area is inflamed, it can‘t soak through far enough to be effective and the “hot’ part of icy-hot will also increase inflammation. Compression: Once your ice treatment is complete, you will then want to wrap the injured area with an ace wrap or some other compression wrap. This will keep the swelling down and allow for your body to start healing. It is important that you DO NOT WRAP TOO TIGHTLY. If you do, swelling can occur below the injured area. If there is tingling in the area after wrapping it up, then your wrap is too tight. You do not want to wrap the area for more than 48 hours at a time. Elevation: You can do this in conjunction with the ICE or the COMPRESSION step. BaSically, anytime you are sitting or lying down, you want to elevate the injury above the heart. This will also keep the swelling down. By following this simple formula, you will be well on your way to getting back into action. Be sure to consult your doctor before fully returning to your activity to make sure that there isn‘t a more extensive injury that you can‘t see visibly. Until Next Time. Crazy, Zany Facts We Bet You Didn't KnowIn last month‘s article one of our facts was "In space, astronauts cannot cry, because there is no gravity, so the tears can't flow. One of our members commented that when the 9/11 attacks happened someone she knew was on the International Space Station and could see the carnage from space. He cried as he was watching but his tears just floated around the cabin of the space station.
