Sleep Better

You may think your sleep routine is as simple as putting on your pajamas, turning the lights off and hopping into bed.  Guess again!  Did you know you may not be sleeping correctly?

Letting proper sleeping habits vAnish is one of the easiest ways to put your health at risk in the long run.  Some long-term consequences of untreated sleep disorders are obesity, depression, heart failure/attack and stroke, just to name a few.

If you are suffering from sleep problems, there are some things you can do to get a better night‘s sleep:

  • Set a schedule – Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, even on the weekends.  Eventually, your “biological clock’ will kick in and you should no longer need an alarm clock to wake up.

  • Cut caffeine- Afternoon is the time of day your body temporarily loses focus and the urge to have caffeine strikes you.  Try avoiding caffeine after 2 PM.

  • Temperature- For a good night‘s rest, set the room temperature to about 65 degrees.

  • Ditch the devices – Avoid any electronics for at least one hour before you head to bed.  Blue lights from devices puts off an alerting mechanism ( the same as the sun) which tells the body to ’wake up’.  If you cannot put the device away at least dim the light to the lowest setting.

  • Naps- Power napping may help you get through the day but if you are having trouble sleeping at bedtime, eliminate the napping.
Healthy sleep habits can make a big difference in your quality of life.  Having healthy sleep habits is often referred to as having good “sleep hygiene’.

  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • ¼ cup raw peanuts
  • ¼ cup black beans
  • ½ tsp mustard seed
  • 6 curry leaves
  • ½ tsp lemon zest
  • 3 tbsp lemon juice

Brown the onion.  Add turmeric, curry leaves and lemon zest with a tbsp or so of water if needed to help blend the spices.  Mix the cooled rice with the onion mixture.  Stir in black beans.

Sprinkle in the lemon juice 1 tbsp at a time and toss, tasting as you go.  (Some prefer less tartness than others, so feel free to stop at 1 tbsp.)  Top with the toasted peanuts and mustard seeds.

Enjoy!  And remember, if it looks good, eat it!!

RICE:  The Best Way To Treat Minor Sports Injuries!

Minor injuries while working out or playing a sport are inevitable.  Whether it be a sore muscle, swollen or tender knee or shoulder, or a sprained ankle, the pain can hinder your ability to keep going.

I don‘t know about you, but anytime that I am down with an injury, the only thing that I am worried about is how long it is going to be before I am able to get up and back at it.

If treated correctly, the comeback trail can start immediately after the minor injury occurs.  There is a formula that is used to help nurse a minor injury back to health.  The formula consists of the word RICE.

RICE is an acronym for Rest, Ice, Compression & Elevation.  Let‘s break it down and see how it works.

Rest:  Not only is this the first step, it is the most critical and the hardest to do.  As an athlete, the first reaction is to try to “toughen up’ or “walk it off’.  That may work for a little while, but eventually that minor injury will become something major.  Rest is important.  Stop the activity and rest the injured area as much as possible.

Ice:  Notice that this is ICE, not HEAT and not ICY-HOT (Such as FlexAll454).  At this point, Ice is what is what is needed.  Ice will reduce swelling, numb the injured area and start the healing process.  Icing an injury can be tricky.  There are many ways to ice down an area of your body and everyone will tell you how to do it differently.  Some suggest ice packs wrapped in a towel and others will suggest a small bag of ice placed directly on the skin of the injured area.  Personally I prefer the ice placed directly on the skin.  It is up to you and what you can handle.  I also recommend a 15-10 1 hour cycle.  15 minutes on, 10 minutes off, 4 times so that it is iced for an hour.  Repeat the process no more that 2x per day.

On a side note, in case some of you are wondEring why you don‘t want heat or icy-hot: The injured area is inflamed.  Heat increases inflammation and causes the injury to swell-up.  Until the swelling is reduced, you will not be able determine the true seriousness of the injury.  Icy-Hot (such as FlexAll454), works really well overall, just not at this point.  These types of creams are better used after the RICE formula.  Icy-hot creams work by soaking through your skin to sooth the injured area.  When the injured area is inflamed, it can‘t soak through far enough to be effective and the “hot’ part of icy-hot will also increase inflammation.

Compression:  Once your ice treatment is complete, you will then want to wrap the injured area with an ace wrap or some other compression wrap.  This will keep the swelling down and allow for your body to start healing.  It is important that you DO NOT WRAP TOO TIGHTLY.  If you do, swelling can occur below the injured area.  If there is tingling in the area after wrapping it up, then your wrap is too tight.  You do not want to wrap the area for more than 48 hours at a time.

Elevation:  You can do this in conjunction with the ICE or the COMPRESSION step.  BaSically, anytime you are sitting or lying down, you want to elevate the injury above the heart.  This will also keep the swelling down.

By following this simple formula, you will be well on your way to getting back into action.  Be sure to consult your doctor before fully returning to your activity to make sure that there isn‘t a more extensive injury that you can‘t see visibly.

Until Next Time.  Stay Healthy, Stay Fit, Stay Strong

Fun Facts:

Crazy, Zany Facts We Bet You Didn't Know

In last month‘s article one of our facts was "In space, astronauts cannot cry, because there is no gravity, so the tears can't flow.  One of our members commented that when the 9/11 attacks happened someone she knew was on the International Space Station and could see the carnage from space.  He cried as he was watching but his tears just floated around the cabin of the space station.  We thank this member for her comment and we invite anyone else that wants to comment to email us by clicking here.

Now more facts

  • The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who later served as President of the United States were John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.

  • President John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe all died on the Fourth. Adams and Jefferson (both signed the DecLaration) died on the same day within hours of each other in 1826.
