Fingernails And Your Health
What do we really know about our fingernails, besides the fact that we paint them, polish them, bite them, trim and manicure them?
You might not be aware of this, but your fingernails can reveal clues to your overall health. If you find irregularities such as pitting, ridges, spots or discoloration on your nails, these are usually cosmetic issues. But there are some nail irregularities that are associated with serious medical conditions.
Below are some signs that your nails are indicating a medical condition:
|
- White bands – This is characterized by a pair of horizontal white lines running parallel to the nail base. If you have undergone chemotherapy you might notice this occurrence, but this also may be linked to liver and kidney disease.
- Nail clubbing – Nails that are curved downward and appear thick may indicate lung, cardiovascular, liver disease, inflammatory to the bowels and HIV infection.
- Spoon nails - Spoon nails may be abnormally thin and flat or even concave (can hold a drop of water). This condition is associated with: Severe iron deficiency anemia and repeated exposure to chemicals or trauma.
- White nail plates - This is a condition known as Terry‘s nails, most of the nail appears white except for a narrow pink band at the tip. Although this will appear as part of aging, this is also associated with congestive heart failure, diabetes and HIV infection.
As much as we like to show off our work from our manicurists, sometimes it‘s best to take a break and observe your nails. You never know what you could be missing by having your nails always done.
If you notice any irregularities in your nails, make an appointment with your primary care physician.

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:
There are so many combinations for this wonderful side dish, but I had this one once at a BBQ and I loved it!! It was served with grilled Pork Ribs. The pineapple and brown sugar gave it such a nice, sweet flavor.

Grilled Sweet Potato Foil Packets
Ingredients
- 3 or 4 sweet potatoes, cut into 1 inch cubes
- 3 bell peppers (yellow or red) cut into 1 inch pieces
- 1 large onion, red, cut into 1 inch cubes
- 2-3 cups pineapple (fresh) cubed
- butter or margarine, melted
- brown sugar
- salt and pepper
|
Use heavy duty tin foil (approximately 9 inch pieces ,each packet serves 1 person)
Spray cooking spray on the foil. Place cubed vegetables and the pineapple in the center of the foil packet. (Do not overfill!)
Drizzle a Tablespoon of the melted butter over each packet, sprinkle lightly with brown sugar. Salt and pepper to taste. Fold the foil, bringing the ends up and folding the sides in, making sure that no liquid can escape. Just fold the ends over until the packet is sealed and compact.
Grill for approximately 30 minutes. Serve Immediately! This recipe will serve 5-6 people.
**Use care when opening the packets. The contents will be steamy hot!
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Doorway Pull-Up Bar!
One of my favorite things to do is to find those few "use at home" items that can help define your workout. Last year it was the exercise ball. Now it is the doorway pull-up bar. Yes my fellow fit-nuts, this item works on a multi-faceted level.
Mine, which is pictured below, is probably the most used workout apparatus in my house. The style that you get will determine what kind of pull-ups you will be able to do. (Wide, shoulder width, close, palms in or palms out).
However, this simple and convenient apparatus can be used for so much more than just pull-ups! You can get very creative with your workout by using this, especially if you have other equipment such as an exercise ball. By combining these two inexpensive items, you can get that solid upper body and core workout.
|
|
Here are some other ways that you can use a doorway pull-up bar:
- Stretching: If you are anything like me, (one that spends most of the work day in front of a computer) then you, too have a really hard time getting a good stretch on your back and shoulder area. This device is perfect for that. Using the different bars that are on it, I can stretch out my shoulder and all parts of my back.
- Lead-up Crunches: This is a good core workout because of the tension on your core when you are literally hanging from the apparatus. All you do is bend your knees and pull your legs up to your chest as tight as you can, then put them down slowly. Repeat this set with the number of reps of your choosing.
- Core Twists: (If you have an exercise ball): This is one my favorite exercises. It serves 2 purposes. It will stretch you out really well, but it will also give you a great core workout. You start by placing the exercise ball on the clamp side of the bar, grip the bar, put your calves on the ball and the roll the ball from side to side. Just be sure you have a real good grip on the bar if you try this!
|
These are just 3 ideas. I could probably list about 3-4 pages of ways that this apparatus can be used.
One thing I need to add about using a doorway pull-up bar safely is to make sure that you have it on a very solid door frame and make sure that when you are doing the exercises, you are doing them on the opposite side of where it clamps above your door. If you do them backwards, there is a potential to dislodge the device from the doorway and you could fall.
The doorway pull-up bar is relatively inexpensive. They usually run anywhere from $30 to $80 depending on the style that you get. Mine retails for about $50. However, for those of you that like to save money try a thrift store. Like I said mine retails for about $50, but after a great Saturday sale at a nearby Goodwill store, mine was hanging up in my house for $9. You can't beat that!

Here’s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
Member A. Ludwitz of Las Vegas, Nv. asks: “I have had Savon Dental Plan for several years and I am due to renew. I have found a few plans that cost less to join than Savon. Can you explain why Savon is more expensive and what it offers that the other plans don‘t?”
Savon's Answer
First of all, make sure you‘re comparing apples to apples. Savon is one of the most comprehensive plans on the market.
With the other dental plans, you may find a few procedures that are less expensive, however, the overall savings with Savon comes from our comprehensive Schedule of Benefits. Every dentist that takes our plan is under contract to charge our members according to our Schedule of Benefits. We set the prices, not the doctor. This avoids the possibility of the dentist inflating the fees and allows the patient time to plan their budget as well as offering a clear definition as to what they are paying for.
Unlike the other dental plans, Savon allows the provider to charge for virtually every procedure. This means that the provider is bringing in a profit (even if it‘s a little one) on almost every Savon member that they treat. What this means to you is a greater longevity with the providers that accept Savon. Providers stay with Savon because our fee schedule is fair and reasonable, for both our providers and our members.
In short, the provider can make money while the patient saves money!!!
Most dental plans list somewhere between 25 and 50 procedures. In most cases, their discounts are only for the procedures that are listed. If a procedure is not listed then you pay the provider's usual fee. Savon‘s Schedule of Benefits lists over 225 procedures.
With Savon, any procedure done by a general practitioner that is not listed on our Schedule of Benefits is still discounted by 50% off of the doctor's own usual and customary fee.
The only thing we offer that is not at least 50% off is specialty work, which is always done at a 25% discount at any of our preferred specialist offices.
If you’re considering changing to Dental Indemnity Insurance… Consider this!
Prior to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, it was almost impossible for an individual to purchase individual Dental Indemnity Insurance. Now… almost every health insurance company offers it. In some cases they even tell you “it’s included in your health coverage.” Just remember, nothing is free!!
You are paying for that dental coverage and we promise you that you will be paying a lot more and getting a lot less coverage that you will get with Savon. We suggest that you visit our Comparison Center and do some homework.
A few minutes on your part will save you money up front on premiums and in the long run on your dental work.
These, of course, are just a few reasons why Savon is the best choice for alternative dental coverage. For more information on the different types of dental coverage as well as some pro‘s and con‘s, read Unraveling the Mystery of Dental Coverage.
