To Your Health:
Heat Related Illness
Here in Arizona we deal with record breaking and sometime excruciating heat. It is not uncommon that we will reach 113+ degrees on a summer afternoon. A heat wave can be tricky too. At times it may not feel as hot as it is due to random cloud cover. This is when it becomes very dangerous as well. Since it does not feel as hot as it actually is, certain heat related safety guidelines are often not followed. This causes a rise in heat related illness every year.
Heat related illness is preventable if you follow the guidelines to keep yourself hydrated and safe.
A good rule of thumb to follow on a 113+ day is: “if you feel thirsty then you are already overheated” so drinking water consistently is very important.
There are 4 types of heat related illness.
- Heat Cramps (caused by low salt levels due to excessive seating)
- Heat Syncope (or Heat Fainting, caused by standing too long)
- Heat Exhaustion (caused by losing too much water and salt)
- Heat Stroke (when the body is unable to cool down)
Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke are the two most commonly recognized by people.  However, one common misconception is that they are the same thing.  Heat exhaustion is basically the warning sign that heat stroke is near onset.  Someone suffering from heat exhaustion can usually recover with little or no difficulty by sipping water or clear juice slowly (so you do not get sick), and resting in a cool place.  Heat stroke on the other hand can be life threatening.  When someone suffering from heat stroke, their body temperature can reach or exceed 106 degrees in a matter of minutes.  Any attempt to cool them down with water and a cool place to rest will be ineffective because the body is unable to cool down.  A heat stroke victim needs immediate medical attention.  Call 9-1-1 immediately, place them in cool area, soak their clothes with water and fan them until paramedics arrive.  Here are symptoms for both Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke:
- Symptoms for heat exhaustion include: Heavy sweating, dizziness, muscle cramps, change in complexion, nausea, clammy skin, higher body temperature, fast and shallow breathing
- Symptoms for heat stroke include: profuse sweating or no sweating, crying with no tears, chills, hallucinations, hot dry skin, high body temperature, confusion, dizziness, slurred speech and throbbing headache.
Heat is no joke.  I have lived in the desert state of Arizona my whole life and trust me when I say that being “used to the heat” is a myth.  Please make sure that if you are out in the heat, regardless of what you are doing, that you make sure that you have plenty of water (recommended is 1 gallon per person, per day) on hand and spend adequate time in the shade.

Here´s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
A. Garland of Dallas, Texas asks:
“I have a tooth with some decay and my dentist said that instead of a composite filling that he wants to do an inlay or onlay. Can you explain the difference?“
Savon’s Answer
Inlays and onlays are a specific type of dental restoration that restores a tooth by providing additional support without requiring the need to damage or destroy too much of the natural tooth. It is often recommended as a form of treatment when a patient has a situation where a composite filling won´t provide enough support to properly restore a tooth, but the damage isn´t so bad that it needs a dental crown.
Inlays and onlays are a solid, single piece of porcelain material that fit snuggly onto a tooth that has a hole left by tooth decay. There is a slight difference between an inlay and onlay. An inlay is shaped to fit the space that occurs near the center of a tooth, while an onlay is larger and fits over the biting surface or the space between teeth.
A composite filling is a quick, easy tooth restoration process that can be completed in a single office visit. Dental inlays and onlays are sturdy dental restorations for teeth that have been damaged to much for a composite filling to be sound, but not so damaged they need a dental crown. The dental inlays and onlays are customized to securely and snugly fit the gap caused by tooth decay. Since inlays and onlays are created in a dental lab they require two visits to your dentist.

What Is Minimally Invasive Dentistry?
A direct reprint from Academy of General Dentists
 |
The goal of minimally invasive dentistry, or microdentistry, is to conserve healthy tooth structure. It focuses on prevention, remineralization, and minimal dentist intervention. Using scientific advances, minimally invasive dentistry allows dentists to perform the least amount of dentistry needed while never removing more of the tooth structure than is required to restore teeth to their normal condition. In addition, in minimally invasive dentistry, dentists use long-lasting dental materials that conserve the maximum tooth structure so the need for future repairs is reduced.
How does it work?
First your dentist will evaluate your risk for tooth decay. The presence of bacteria, quality and quantity of saliva, and your diet are all contributors to decay. Your dentist will then use strategies to prevent or reduce your risk for tooth decay. For instance, if you have a high level of oral bacteria, you might be advised to use mouthwash daily, limit the intake of certain carbohydrates, and practice good oral hygiene.
|
Which techniques are used?
Minimally invasive dentistry techniques include:
- Remineralization: Remineralization is the process of restoring minerals. Remineralization can repair the damage created by the demineralization process. Fluoride plays a very important role in remineralization.
- Air abrasion: When a tooth cannot be remineralized and decay is present, your dentist may use air abrasion to remove the decay. Air abrasion is used instead of a traditional drill and may not require anesthesia. It resembles microscopic sand blasting and uses a stream of air combined with a super-fine abrasive powder.
- Sealants: Usually made of plastic resin, dental sealants protect teeth from bacteria that cause decay. Sealants fit into the grooves and depressions of the tooth and act as a barrier, protecting against acid and plaque. Sealants do not require any cutting of the tooth and can be placed on teeth that might be susceptible for decay at any time.
- Inlays and onlays: Usually dentists use crowns to restore a tooth, but inlays and onlays do not require them to remove as much of the tooth structure. Inlays are similar to fillings except that they are custom-made to fit the cavity in your tooth and are typically the same color as the tooth or gold colored. Onlays are used for more substantial reconstruction and also do not require your dentist to remove as much of the tooth as would a crown.
- Bite splints: Many people grind their teeth at night. Grinding, or bruxism, may cause serious damage to the teeth, and may require you to need crowns. Grinding, which often begins in your teenage years or early 20s, can be detected and corrected before much damage has been done. Dentists can create bite splints for you to wear at night or during stressful times when most teeth-grinding occurs.
Where can I find a dentist who practices minimally invasive dentistry?
Most of our network dentists use some type of minimally invasive dentistry techniques in their everyday practice. Ask your dentist if he or she uses these techniques.
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
