Cohen’s Corner – Straight talk from the Doctor:
Gasoline and My Teeth??
I promised you last month, after I wrote that very technical and heavily medically - compromised article, that I would go easy on that stuff this month. So let‘s talk about something that we all can easily understand and are all being hit very hard with: The Price of Gasoline.
Before I start I want to let those of you who don‘t know that besides having a dental degree, I also have a degree in finance. So let‘s talk about the price of gas and how it can
directly affect your oral health. Energy, which includes gasoline, is what is known as a core indicator of inflation. What this means is that if the price of gasoline goes up,
and boy we all know that has happened, the price of many other things we use in our daily lives go up also. The bad news is that, except for fluctuations in the price, I don‘t
foresee the price of gasoline going down any time in the near future. As a matter of fact, it is my opinion that the prices we are now paying for gasoline could be the lows in the future.
Okay, you are saying, please don‘t add any more pain than I am already feeling at the pump and how the heck does gasoline affect my teeth anyway?? The answer is that as the price
of gasoline goes up, so does the cost of doing business for the dentist. As the price of running a dental practice rises, so do the dental fees that the dentist charges his
patients. If this were not true, the dentist couldn't‘t keep his/her business going and would have to close his/her doors. Unfortunately, this scenario of upward movement
of prices follows for anything that is delivered from one part of the world to another part because it all takes gasoline (energy) to get there. Haven‘t you seen the cost of food going up lately? Now the good news! (You didn‘t think I was going to leave you hanging until next month like all of those season finales on television, did you?) The good
news is, even though we are all going to have to tighten and trim our budgets so that we can get all the things we need, companies like Savon Dental Plan are working hard to help you
save money by teaming up with dentists in your community so that they can offer you a reduced fee on your oral health care.
Neglecting your oral health needs is not the answer because it is a proven fact that “waiting ’til it hurts” most of the time costs much more than if you go for a check up and have any
minor things that need to be repaired taken care of when they are still minor. You say that you have dental insurance at work and so you don‘t need a dental plan such as Savon
Dental Plan; not so! As the cost of things go up, the insurance companies jump right in and will usually raise their costs to you also. The money that comes out of your
paycheck for insurance just keeps going up and up and, as a matter of fact, this cost usually leads to prices going still higher! If you are one of the very few lucky ones that
has their work paying for their insurance needs, and I don‘t know if there are any more companies like that around these days, my advice is to stick with them and work very hard for
them because these companies are as good as gold. What‘s a person to do! The answer is the same as it was in second grade: “stop, look, and listen!” Stop and recognize the problem, look around and see if there is a solution to the problem, and listen to what other people are doing to solve the problem. The people at
Savon Dental Plan are there to serve you and maybe they can help you “ease the pain at the pump” by lowering the cost of your dental health care. The phone call is free
(800-809-3494) so you have nothing to lose. To all my readers again, thank-you for your interest and concerns, it is your suggestions that help me put together an interesting and informative “Cohen‘s Corner”.
Again, thank-you and keep those suggestions coming. Dr. B. Cohen
Congratulations to J. Holter of Lanham Maryland Winner of our May's T. V. Drawing
Mr. Holter was the winner of May's T. V. drawing. A new 20" television was delivered to him a couple of weeks ago. Again, thank you to everyone that entered the drawing.
Secret word contest getting results:
For almost a year I have posted our newsletter on the website running the secret word contest. In that time I have not had anyone respond with an answer. Last month we initiated our first Email newsletter. The response for the contest was impressive. On June 10th we will draw a name and the winner will be sent a check for $25.00. The name of the winner will be posted in Julys newsletter.
We need ideas for YOUR newsletter:
The object of this newsletter is to help keep the members informed and enlightened. Month after Month I sit here and try to come up with interesting, informative and entertaining ideas to share with you. I believe that we can make this a better tool for all of us if we receive member input.
To that end, if you have an idea or an article that you would like to submit for the newsletter, type it up and email it to me. You will find my email link near the bottom of the Contact Us page. Send you articles to Clay P.
Our goal is to make this YOUR newsletter and we will include as many articles as space permits.
To your health:
A message from Clay Parker, Director of Operations
Prior to the start of Savon Dental Plan in 1991, I spent 20 years in the floor covering business, both as an installer and the owner of a company. The end result was damage to my knees, arms, back and just about every other joint in my body. I had decided that the pain and discomfort was something that I was just going to have to learn to live with and I accepted that there were things that I just was not going to be able to do anymore.
After 5 years of trying to play golf, in January I started taking lessons. The lessons and the practice brought out aches and pains that I never had before. Then quite by accident, I learned about a juice that may just be able to help me. The person that introduced it to me was my golf coach. Since he did not want to give me any false hopes, he told me to just try it and see what happens.
I have been taking it for a week now and I am quite impressed. I am leaving on the 5th for vacation and I will continue to drink it while I am gone. I will report back to you in the July newsletter and let you know what the name of it is and if it's a good product or just "snake oil".

Savons' nationwide move is going strong :
Some of our members may not be aware of this, for the past 18 months we have been expanding our list of Network Preferred Providers.
In the past, members that lived or traveled outside of Arizona were forced to use the services of Network Providers. Although the Network Providers have
done the job so far, we realize that the key to our growth is to have Network Preferred Providers available nationwide. Below is a list of the states that have network preferred providers:
- Arizona
- California
- New York
- Texas
- Nevada
- Washington
- Utah
- New Jersey
- Georgia
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- Florida
- Maryland
- Illinois
- Virginia
- New Mexico
- Ohio
These Providers are in order from the most per state to the fewest per state. To find out if we have Network Preferred Providers near you, a friend or relative, please visit the Find a Provider page on our website.
Golf tournament update:
We are now in stage 2 of putting together a charity golf tournament planned for the fall of this year.
The response from our members has been impressive. We have even had a member from Tucson that has offered to drive up to Phoenix to help with the event.
To those of you that have already responded to us, we will be getting back to you after I get back from vacation (the last week of June). It also looks like we may have picked up a corporate sponsor, but we won't know for certain until I get back.
We are looking for 18 - 4 person teams. The event will be a shotgun start, best team score. Again if you are interested in playing or helping with this event, please contact our Director of Sales and Marketing: Ms. Meri Osborne. We need all the help we can get to make this tournament a success.
Business partners' guide update:
We are still in the process of developing the business partners' guide. As a member, if you have a business that you would like to have listed, now is the time to get your name in.
Please email your name, a brief description of your business and your website url to ().
If you have a business and don't have a website, we can help. We have the ability to design and maintain professional looking websites at a fraction of what other companies charge.
If you are interested in a website, send a short email to me at (). I will be checking my email while on vacation and I will respond to you as soon a possible.
