To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:
Cycling For Good Health
|
Everywhere you look lately, people are riding bikes. Bike riding is good in many ways such as helping the pollution problem, saving your money, and one of the BEST things; it‘s a great way to get outdoors and exercise! Did you know there are many health benefits to riding a bike too?
Bike riding is one of the easiest ways to exercise - you can ride your bike just about anywhere and almost any time of the year!
Builds Strength and tones muscles - cycling primarily involves the legs but also tones other muscles such as the buttocks and thighs. Cycling also helps the mobility in your knees and hips and working the handle bars help tone your arms.
Reduces stress - cycling regularly helps reduce stress and depression. Once you are outside in the fresh air enjoying the beautiful ride you become more relaxed.
Torches Calories - cycling is a great way to shed those extra pounds, you can burn around 300 calories per hour!
|
If you are looking to lose weight cycling is a great way to do it! Go dig your bike out from the garage and go take a spin! Here are a few ways to put your bike to good use:
- Go for an hour ride around your neighborhood
- Gather a group of family/friends and take a bike ride
- If you have errands to run that are close by, ride your bike
Simply by riding your bike regularly you can lose around a pound a week but if you decide to take up cycling there are some considerations to take into hand first:
- Consult your physician before starting a fitness program
- Start Slowly (set a small goal first and work your way up)
- Better to be safe than sorry so use proper protection (headgear, elbow/knee pads)

Let it set for about 4 hours in the refrigerator to blend the flavors.
Serve with Tortilla chips, Fritos , or as a wonderful topping for Tacos and Tostadas.
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Here’s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
Dave S. of Phoenix, AZ asks:
“I am in my late 70's and I have been on blood thinners for a few years now. I have been going to the same dentist for quite sometime and have only needed cleanings and minor fillings. The last time I went in, he decided that I needed to have a tooth extracted but would not do it at this visit because of the blood thinners. If they can do all of the other work, why can't they just pull the tooth?”
Savon’s Answer
You are taking blood thinning drugs (antiplatelet or anticoagulant) to maintain the consistency of blood and prevent blood clotting. These make the blood thin enough to flow through fine vessels and this reduced consistency can be dangerous in case of deep wounds or surgeries.
For dental procedures that do not involve cutting – like fillings, whitening, or cleaning – it is relatively safer for you to continue using blood thinners than to give up the medication completely. That‘s because, there are a number of local measures (like using gauze) which can be applied to control bleeding.
Sometimes, patients using blood thinners need major dental surgery or procedure like implantation, extraction, or root canal. As always, the benefits and potential risks of stopping the blood thinners must be analyzed and weighed. Dentists might require conducting a series of blood tests to determine the consistency of the blood, and prescribe some pre-treatment medication to the patient.
Although it is very rare in dentistry to cause critical or life threatening complexities, it is important to inform the dentist about blood thinners before going for a dental procedure. Not only about anticoagulant medications, but you should also discuss with the dentists about every medicine you are taking. While people using anticoagulant medications can have dental work, dentists recommend patients to share their health record with them.

Bad Breath Tops List Of Partner Turnoffs
An edited reprint of an article by Melissa Busch of DrBicuspid.com
|
With summertime love in the air, who doesn‘t want to know what turns off partners? Unsurprisingly, bad breath tops the list, according to a recent poll from oral care product company SmartMouth and research firm OnePoll.
Of 2,000 U.S. respondents, 52% found bad breath to be the biggest turnoff when meeting a new partner. Halitosis beat out bad hygiene/body odor (47%), a bad sense of humor (35%), and cockiness/overconfidence (28%).
Respondents also reported that nothing ruins a first kiss like bad breath. Nearly 40% reported that bad breath ruins a first kiss followed by inexperience or lack of technique (15%), or a lack of chemistry (9%), according to the poll results, which was conducted in late 2022.
Also, respondents recognized how less–than–fresh breath affects their self–confidence, especially during important life events. The moments that had people most worried about bad breath were going on a date (48%) and interviewing for a job (40%).
|
Sorry, dentists, patients weren‘t nearly as worried about bad breath when visiting the dentist. Only 16% were concerned about bad breath when they go to appointments, according to the results.
“This survey shows how important fresh breath is, in terms of its influence on one‘s self–confidence, as well as on interpersonal relationships,” SmartMouth CEO Jim Scheetz said in a press release dated February 2.
Though individuals were aware of bad breath and how it affects their lives and others, many weren‘t aware of what caused it. Most (41%) pointed to food as the culprit followed by bacteria (36%), smoking (35%), dry mouth (28%), and sulfur gas (12%). Volatile sulfur compounds, which arise from dental plaque and oral bacteria, are major contributing factors to bad breath.
“My hope is more people become educated about sulfur gas‘s role in causing bad breath so they can take the necessary steps to eliminate it –– and bad breath,” Scheetz said.
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
