Got a canker sore? Put a little B12 on it!
This information was found in an article on Dr. Bicuspid
Recent trials have suggested that the use of vitamin B12 on repeat canker sores is a safe and effective treatment, and it’s inexpensive as well.
The cause of canker sores is unknown, however, the frequency of a repeat canker sore is estimated as much as 25% in the general population. Many treatments have been brought to the table over the years, including antiseptics, vitamins, herbs and other over-the-counter treatments. While these do help to relieve pain and minimize the appearance of canker sores, very few of them have any lasting benefits.
In a study done using B12 on one group and a placebo on another group, it was found that B12 significantly reduced the amount of sores, as well as pain, and the duration of outbreaks. Over half of the group that was given the B12 were canker sore free by the last month of the trial.
Although it is unclear as to exactly how vitamin B12 achieves these effects, the important thing is that it has been deemed safe and more effective to use as an alternative to more expensive treatments.

To your health: Study-Stress and Depression Linked to Gum Disease -- Is stress bad for your teeth?
This information was found in an article on Dr. Bicuspid
The cause of gum disease has always been linked to genetics, diabetes, and smoking. However, in a recent study, it was found that stress and depression might be the cause as well.
The study looked at 45 patients within a specific age group (45-82) who have a history of periodontal issues. The participants took surveys on health, oral hygiene, stress and depression. Their stress hormone (salivary cortisol) was measured, and they had a hygienist assess the level of perio disease. Researchers found that stress, depression, and salivary cortisol are factors in the development of periodontal disease.
It has been recommended that addressing psychological issues, such as depression, may be an important part of preventive maintenance.
How can you doctor help you?
- First, they should do an assessment of stress as part of the evaluation. Also, they should educate you on the relationship between stress and perio disease and ways to manage it, for example:
- Explain that you can not cure stress or make it stop, you must change how you react to it
- Recommend that you change how you react and behave in different stressful situations
- Stress the importance of continuous preventative dental care
Some other ideas for controlling your stress levels would be exercise and relaxation. Also, paying extra close attention to your dental needs while under stress may help, such as flossing, brushing, and regular exam visits.
The above health material is provided as an information service. It should not be used for diagnostic purposes nor is it intended to take the place of the important relationship between you and your doctor.
A question from a member:
Question;
I renewed my plan and received my membership card. Why does it say it’s expired?
Savon's Answer:
The new format of our membership cards has created a bit of confusion and we are currently working on a solution to that problem. Your card expiration date should read the Month and Day (i.e. 01/05), with the expiration YEAR is inside the box on the face of your card. If the number inside the box is the incorrect year, your card may be expired or it may be an error. In either case, simply contact us at 1-800-809-3494 and a representative will assist you.
