Stress And Your Health
Stress – We all (children to adults) suffer from it. Sometimes stress can be a positive force by making you motivated to succeed, but stress is a negative force making you want to throw your hands in the air and just give up. If you experience stress over a long period of time it can become chronic, unless you take action.
When chronic stress starts interfering with your ability to live a normal life, at this point it has become dangerous. The longer the stress lasts, the worse it is on your body.
Below are just some of the effects stress can have on your body:
|
- Respiratory and Cardiovascular Systems - Stress hormones affect both your respiratory and cardiovascular systems. During the stress response, you start to breath faster. If you have any pre-existing respiratory problems like asthma, stress will make it harder to breathe, which can lead to hyperventilation that can bring on panic attacks.
Your heart also pumps faster with chronic stress raising your risk of hypertension and problems with your blood vessels and heart. You‘re at a higher risk of having a stroke or heart attack.
- Digestive System - Under stress, your liver produces extra blood sugar to give you an energy boost. With this extra boost of blood sugar you are at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
The rush of hormones, rapid breathing and increased heart rate can also upset your digestive system which can cause vomiting, nausea, stomachache, diarrhea, constipation even worse, heart burn and acid reflux.
- Muscular System – When the body is stressed, muscles tense up all at once, then release their tension when stress passes. When muscles are tense for a long period of time, it may trigger other reactions in the body such as headaches and migraines.
The key is to stop stress before it stops you. It‘s simpler than you might think; follow these simple tips to help keep stress at bay:
- Although you can‘t control certain things, keep a positive outlook.
- Learn and practice relaxation techniques such as yoga or mediation.
- Exercise regularly.
- Eat balanced meals.
- Say NO to things that will add more stress to your life.

Easy Peasy, Tasty Shortcake
I have done this many times when in a pinch for a dessert, or even when I'm just in the mood for something sweet. There are so many possibilities with this one and it's always a hit!
Ingredients
- 1 loaf of Pound Cake (homemade, frozen or store bought. Your preference.)
- 1 can Pie filling, chilled (Cherry, Blueberry, Apple, Peach… even Lemon!)
- Whipped Cream
|
Slice the Pound Cake in thick 1 inch slices. Place on individual serving plates, according to the number of guests you are serving.
Spoon a serving of pie filling over each slice. Top with Whipped Cream and serve!
It looks pretty on the plate and it tastes divine!
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Work-Out Dizziness
Anyone that has worked out at one point another has experienced some dizziness. Dizziness is a complicated issue. It is like getting a check engine light on in your car. It could be something really serious or something really simple that can easily be rectified. Regardless, the panic of “what could it be” is still there. Now, don‘t get me wrong, dizziness is something that should never be downplayed and should always be taken seriously.
Dizziness is a warning sign. Just like the check engine light in your car is alerting you that something is wrong, dizziness is doing the same thing. Feeling dizzy within itself during a workout can cause you to get nauseated, lose your balance and feel light headed. If at any point in time during your workout you start to feel dizzy you should stop immediately, keep your head above your heart, sit down or walk around. Do not lie down.
|
There are many causes of dizziness but there are 4 main reasons why you could get dizzy during a workout:
- Lack of water: Dizziness is a warning sign of dehydration. Drinking plenty of water during your work out will help reduce the risk of dehydration.
- Improper Breathing: This could be a result of holding your breath during reps or stretching. If you are overexerting yourself then your breathing will be short and rapid. When this happens you are not getting enough oxygen and it will cause you to feel dizzy.
- Low Blood Sugar: If you think that low blood sugar is only for those people that have diabetes or hypoglycemia, then you are mistaken! Your body uses sugar in the form of glucose for just about everything it does. If you skip a meal before a work-out or don‘t take in enough calories, then your blood sugar is already low. Working out will cause the blood sugar to drop even more and cause you to feel dizzy.
- Medical Related Issues: Sometimes the dizziness can be related to another medical issue that you may have. It could a particular medication you take as well. In this case, you should consult with your doctor and get checked out prior to continuing to work out.
