To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:

Shamrock Shakes

Jourdin
Saint Patrick‘s Day is just around the corner which means festivities, parades, decking out in green gear and pinching.

There's Irish car bombs and green beer for those who love alcohol but let‘s not forget McDonald‘s is now offering their delicious famous green, minty drink… the Shamrock Shake!  Millions of people around the world patiently await this time of year, myself included.

Although these shakes are delicious and only available for a limited time, that doesn‘t mean we should over indulge.  This seemingly harmless tradition is destroying our health one minty sip at a time.

Why do I say that?  Let‘s take a look at these mind blowing nutritional facts of a medium (16oz) Shamrock Shake:
  • Calories – 580 (equivalent of a full healthy lunch)

  • Calories from fat – 150

  • Fat – 16 grams

  • Saturated fat – 10 grams

  • Trans fat – 1 gram

  • Carbohydrates – 74 grams

  • Cholesterol – 65 grams

  • Sugar – 80 grams (equivalent of eating six slices of bread all at once)

  • Sodium – 190 milligrams
According to Mary Hartley, registered dietitian and online nutritionist, Shamrock Shakes aren‘t the worst think out there, there's the Dairy Queen Blizzard.  Hartley admits “Making your own healthier version at home might be the perfect compromise.”

You can find many healthy Shamrock Shake alternative recipes online.  Some recipes that I've come across replaced ice cream with Greek yogurt and even included fruits and veggies like avocado, spinach, bananas and coconuts.

Now we can enjoy our favorite St. Patty‘s Day treat in a healthy way!

Add another tbsp of oil to the fry pan, reheat over med heat and add carrots and celery.  Fry for several minutes, just until vegetables begin to soften.

In the meantime, in a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sesame oil and orange juice.

Add the cooked rice, cooked shrimp, pineapple, peas, scallions and the sauce blend.  Salt and pepper to taste.  Toss until coated.

Remove from heat and top with a garnish of your choice, such as peanuts or cashews, and fresh parsley or cilantro.

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Take A Fitness Class That Works For You

Clayton (TR)
What is the purpose of joining a fitness class?  Let me assure you that is not a trick question, however most answers will be different for everybody.  Basically it usually comes down to a few answers.
  1. My friend goes to it
  2. I feel healthier after the class
  3. It works for me
The first answer is very common.  Most people actually go only because their friend does.  You can usually pick those people out of the crowd pretty quickly.  They are the ones that need the extra coaching from their friend or they just go through the motions.  It is usually clear that their friend is getting more out of the class.  Also, they usually do not show up unless their friend is there.

The second answer is reasonable and makes sense.  However, try to avoid the misconception that feeling healthier means that you had an effective workout.  I feel healthier after drinking a glass of milk, but that does not mean that the act of lifting the glass was an effective workout.  There are a lot of things that will make you healthy or feel healthier and there is no doubt that they are healthy for you.  However, that does not mean that they are helping you make progress towards your fitness goals.

The third answer should be your answer if you want to make advances in your workout plan.  If you find a fitness class that challenges you physically, one that you have the post workout exhaustion or maybe even makes you a little sore afterward, then that is a class that is working for you.  That is the class that should be part of your fitness plan.

There are many fitness classes and programs available.  Each one is designed for a particular type of exercise and is slated to bring you different results.  That does not mean that every one of them will work for you or bring you those results.  Ever heard the phrase “Results May Vary”?

Take Zumba for example.  I tried a Zumba class and it really did not work for me.  It is a great program, do not get me wrong.  It was fun to mix a dance style with exercise and increase my cardio, but that was all it was for me.  It may work for you, it just did not work for me.  I can get the same cardio workout on an elliptical and get a better workout for my legs.  I went to the class because of answer #1, my friend invited me to go.  It works for him, but not for me.  So I stopped going and went on to something that helps me make progress towards my goals.  It goes back to my article from a couple of years ago where I talked about doing your own workout and not someone else‘s.

So join a fitness class, enjoy it, just make sure that it works for you! Every time you leave the gym you want to make sure that you made progress!

Until next time: Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!

Fun Facts:

Crazy, Zany Facts About St. Patrick's Day We Bet You Didn't Know

confused
  • The world‘s first recorded Saint Patrick's Day Parade took place in Boston on March 18, 1737.

  • Ireland took over a century to jump on the parade float with the rest of the world and only had their first St. Patrick‘s Day Parade in Dublin in 1931.

  • The original color associated with St. Patrick was blue, but because the Saint preached about the Holy Trinity through the symbol of the shamrock and the Irish ‘little folk‘ were also associated with green, it became the most common shade in connection with him.

  • In 1961, business manager of Chicago‘s Journeymen Plumbers Local Union, Stephen Bailey, received permission to turn the Chicago River green for St. Patrick‘s Day.  Due to uncertainties about the amount of dye it would take to turn the river green, a massive 100 lbs of vegetable dye was used in comparison to the 25 lbs used today.  The Chicago River stayed green for a full week.

  • And not a snake in sight. Patrick is said to have banished the snakes from Ireland but in fact, Ireland never had any snakes as the weather was too miserable for the cold-blooded reptiles.

  • On Evacuation Day, March 17, 1776, the General Orders issued by Washington were that those wishing to pass through Continental Army lines should give the password “Boston,” to which the reply should be “St. Patrick.”

  • Saint Patrick was actually born in Roman Britain at the end of the 4th century AD and taken to Ireland by slavers when he was a teenager.  The exact place of his birth is debatable as some say Scotland and some say Wales but, either way, he‘s Irish now.

  • Saint Patrick is a saint of the Catholic Church, and his holy day is the day of his death, and subsequent entrance to heaven.  St. Patrick went to his reward on March 17, 461 AD.

Here’s Your Answer

Questions From Our Members

R. Victor of Las Vegas, Nevada asks:

“I see other dental plans on the market that offer vision, chiropractic and other benefits.  Does Savon offer anything other than dental?”

Savon’s Answer

The answer to this question is no we don't.  Over the years we have tried offering other benefits but decided that we needed to be great at one thing instead of good at several things…  We chose to be great at dental coverage!
