To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:

Flossing While Driving Can Cost You Money

A partial reprint from an article by Melissa Busch at DrBicuspid.com
Jourdin
A Tesla driver in Canada decided to work on his oral health while behind the wheel but it didn´t quite go as he expected.  The man was charged with careless driving after police caught him using both hands to floss his teeth while cruising on “autopilot,” according to news reports.

The unnamed 58-year-old Ontario motorist was pulled over in January when officers noticed that he didn't have any hands on the steering wheel because he was flossing his teeth.  He was driving 84 mph, which is about 60 mph over the maximum speed limit in Oakville, where he was pulled over.

Though Tesla vehicles come equipped with a self-driving function that assists drivers with maintaining speed, changing lanes, and parking, the company urges motorists to pay attention and be prepared to take the wheel during difficult situations or to avoid crashes.

Unfortunately, this man isn´t the first Tesla driver to misuse the car´s self-driving function.  In December, a Connecticut man was driving on autopilot when he crashed into a police car.  The man was given a ticket for reckless driving after he admitted he wasn´t paying attention.  People have been caught eating, drinking, sleeping, and even creating a pornographic video while using autopilot.

The bottom line is, new cars have a lot of new perks and safety features.  Make sure that you stay focused on driving.

If you can´t pay attention…  Get the floss off the road.

Here´s Your Answer

Questions From Our Members

F. Jenkins of Santa Anna, California asks:

“I´m 23 years old and I´m considering braces.  I saw the ads from a company called Smile Direct Club.  What do you know about them and what are your feelings about this service?“

Savon’s Answer

There are a lot of things today that can be accomplished remotely, (buying insurance, clothes, shoes, vacations, etc.) but we feel that anything having to do with your personal health is better handled face to face with a professional.

The best way to fully answer your question is to refer you to the article below entitled “Thinking Of Mail Order Braces?  Buyer Beware!”.

Whatever decision you make, do your homework, check for reviews, read the fine print and know what you are getting yourself into.

Thinking Of Mail Order Braces?  Buyer Beware!

A guest article by Corilee Parker

Information from an article posted by Becker´s Dental Review on February 14th, 2020 indicates that the SmileDirectClub may not be all it has been advertised to be!  There could be trouble in the water for this growing company.

This is how it works:

The popular company, which promotes an orthodontic product (clear aligner) online, offers an at home kit for you to create impressions and send to them.  Then a licensed dentist reviews the impressions and determines whether you are a candidate for clear aligners.  If, in his expert opinion, you are, he will then design a custom plan to transform your smile, complete with a computerized preview so that you can see what your teeth will look like when the process is completed.
Next, they will make a complete set of custom aligners and send them all to you with instructions on how to wear them and for how long.  You will be assigned a dentist who will check in with you every 90 days, for the duration of your treatment.  (Treatment times vary, average is 18 mo.)

After your treatment is complete, you can purchase retainers to wear at night to keep your teeth in alignment.

Payment arrangements can be made through SmilePaySM for just $85 monthly.  The site claims there are no forms to fill out and no credit checks.

There seem to be some fundamental problems with this entire process. Nowhere does it mention filling out a medical history form prior to treatment.  Refunds appear to be nearly impossible because their “non-disclosure” agreement requires a patient to sign the agreement prior to posting any reviews or complaints on social media, et al.

Of course, signing the agreement means that you cannot post negative reviews about the company.  Many people do not realize that, and will post a review or contact an attorney first, and then of course, the company will not refund.

NBC news placed hidden cameras at SmileDirectClub shops in 3 states and they caught employees on video “misguiding patients, telling them they don´t have to see a dentist before treatment”.  This is significant. It is proof that things are not always as they seem.

Additionally, they don´t appear to mention on their website that all potential customers are required to see a dentist within 6 months before they begin treatment, as well as having a mid-treatment evaluation at one of their SmileShops.

It is interesting to note that on their website, SmileDirectClub asserts that they have “more than 750,000 grinners and counting”.

To date, the Better Business Bureau has logged over 1,800 complaints.  The complaints range from minor to major, including customer service issues and product quality to nerve damage and broken teeth.

Editor´s Note:  The BBB website states that “Due to the volume of complaints filed against this business, BBB only publishes the details for 50% of the total complaints filed.”

Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
