Managing Your Weight

The majority of the people who have lost weight on a diet usually end up gaining the weight back within a few years if not sooner. The reason they gain the weight back is the strategies they use to lose weight are not the same as the strategies necessary keep weight off.  Diets can help you lose weight but in order to keep the weight off, a life style change is needed.

The KEY to keeping weight off after a diet is by making everything a habit by:

Exercise - Do this everyday weather its stroll around your neighborhood, at home exercises, or even going to the gym.  It doesn't matter what you do as long as you stick to it.

Count Calories – Studies have shown that strict calorie counting does not help in the long run.  Women:  Your meat portion should be the size of your palm.  Men:  Your meat portion should be the size of a credit card.  Then double the meat portion with veggies, and the remainder of the plate with a whole-grain food.  Calories do count but you don‘t have to be so strict.

Fiber – High fiber foods fill you up (veggies, fruit and whole grains).  You should eat 4-5 cups of fiber rich foods a day.

Other helpful tips on managing your weight:
  • Control your carb intake

  • Portion Control

  • Take Vitamins

  • Don‘t forget your dairy

  • Keeping a food diary
Staying Positive and motivated is an important part of weight management.  Try to stay stress fee.  Eat balanced meals.  But MOST IMPORTANTLY don‘t become obsessed with your weight.

Shrimp Scampi (With A Healthier Twist!)

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ Tbsps Extra Virgin Olive Oil (I use the light olive oil)
  • 1 ½ lbs uncooked medium shrimp (tails on, peeled and deveined)
  • 6-8 cloves of fresh garlic, minced or diced
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • ½ cup dry white wine (not necessarily the cooking wine… use your own leftover wine if you like)
  • ¼ cup lemon juice
  • ¼ cup fresh minced parsley

Saute the shrimp with the minced garlic for approximately 3 minutes.  Remove shrimp from pan and set aside.

In the skillet, combine the chicken broth, wine, lemon juice, parsley, salt and pepper.  Boil, letting the sauce reduce down to about half.

Remove from heat, add the shrimp to the sauce and immediately spoon over cooked Angel Hair pasta and serve.

There are a few of variations to this recipe!  Although I have not tried them all, I will list them for you here:
  1. I made this dish using pesto instead of parsley, and I mixed the pesto directly into the pasta and not the sauce.  Loved it!

  2. I'm told that ¼ cup of grated parmesan cheese added to the sauce adds a creamy texture and flavor to the dish.

  3. Someone else suggested that you could add some sweetened coconut milk and a small amount of flaked coconut to the sauce for a Coconut Scampi.  This is one I would like to try!  If you do try it, please let me know how it turns out!

Prevent Memory Loss!

If you‘re anything like me, many times you have walked in to a room, stopped, stared for a minute, and completely forgot what you went in there for.  Memory loss is something most of us associate with age.  While that is one of the biggest causes, there are other things in your daily life which could be causing you to be more forgetful than usual.

STRESS:  Maybe you‘re overloaded at work, maybe you‘re worried about bills, or maybe your schedule is just too busy.  Stress can cause short term memory loss, primarily due to the distractions and disruptions a chaotic environment brings.  Having “too much on your mind” can also cause you to forget things like names, numbers, short conversations, etc.

LACK OF SLEEP:  When you don‘t sleep, your brain loses a percentage of functionality which directly affects concentration and focus.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE: For obvious reasons, any kind of substance abuse can directly affect your memory.  While your memory might be compromised while you‘re intoxicated, alcohol and substance abuse can cause long term damage that cannot be reversed such as dementia, multiple personality disorders, Alzheimer‘s disease etc.

Here are some things you can do to help keep your mind sharp!
  • Exercise the mind and body - The best thing you can do for your body and brain is to work it out.  Exercise daily, a brisk walk or a jog around the block, do yoga, and STRETCH!  Do challenging puzzles to engage your brain, crosswords, jigsaw, etc.

  • Power up on brain-friendly food -

    • Apples - good for brain health all the way around, they contain a high level of antioxidants which raise the levels of neurotransmitters for memory.

    • Iron - is also essential in helping those neurotransmitters work properly.

    • Drink red wine - it helps lower your cholesterol, which is also hard on the memory.  High cholesterol can cause a multitude of problems ranging from simple to fatal.  Your ENTIRE body is affected by high cholesterol, not just your memory.  Opt for healthier food options with lower levels of cholesterol.

    • Don‘t forget to get your omega-3‘s!

  • Slow down - doing too much at once, spreading yourself too thin, over booking your schedule, whatever it is that is stressing you out, slow down your pace.  Rushing leads to heavier breathing, leading to panic and anxiety, causing you to lose focus and concentration.  Make sure you‘re giving yourself time to relax, breathe and regroup!
Here‘s to a healthy memory!
