Waist Training
Over the last couple of months I have noticed from my personal social media accounts that many personal friends and celebrities are doing this new “weight loss” fad called waist training.
You may be wondering what waist training is, just like I did when I first saw/heard about it.
Waist training is a gradual process of waist reduction using a waist-cinching corset. Waist training practice came about in the Victorian times but has made a comeback recently. Wearing a waist- cinching corset, eating balanced meals and exercising can radically reduce your waist size instantly, and give you a beautiful silhouette. However, although you may feel beautiful with a smaller waist there are many dangers of waist training:
|
- Chafes of skin - Chafing happens when your skin rubs together over time and gets very irritated. Because chafing happens most often when your skin is moist, wearing these tight corsets can cause you to sweat which will lead to a rash.
- Makes it hard to breathe – We all know how hard it is to breathe when are clothes are too tight. Corsets can press hard on your body and can restrict your lungs.
- Fractured ribs - Your rib cage protects your organs. Wearing the corset for long periods of time and tightening of the corset can crack your ribs.
- Harmful to internal organs – Since the corsets job is to condense your waist, it can compress your stomach, intestines and colon.
If you want to lose weight around your mid-section and have thought about giving waist training a try, please realize how dangerous this can be to your body. There are more healthy ways to achieve a slimmer waist; all you need to do is eat healthy and be active on a regular basis. I know this is not the trendy, fast way but it‘s the right, healthy way!

Simple No-Bake Berry Surprise
Ingredients
- 1 cup blueberries
- 1 cup strawberries, sliced thin
- 1 container strawberry glaze
- ¼ cup sugar (optional, according to taste)
- 1 regular tub whipped topping
- 1 box Twinkies or Cloud Cakes
|
In a 9 X 9 square glass baking dish, arrange as many twinkies as you can fit in the pan without crowding them. Place them in the freezer for about 20 minutes.
While the twinkies are chilling, combine the sliced strawberries and the blueberries in a bowl.
Remove twinkies from freezer and pour the strawberry glaze over them reserving about ¼ cup for the berries. Add the sugar to the remaining glaze and toss into berry mixture. Spread the berries over the top of the glazed twinkies. Spread the whipped cream over the top. Refrigerate.
*This recipe is best if you eat it on the same day!
I have seen a few unique variations of this recipe online. People are so creative!
Apparently, you can add marshmallows, walnuts, shaved white chocolate on top, or even coconut! Or, you can change up the fruit and use canned mandarin oranges, or even line pineapple on the bottom of the pan and put the twinkies over them first, then top with the strawberries, glaze and whipped cream.
Any way you do it, it's a great summer treat!
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Body Mass Index (BMI) And Your Workout
Body Mass Index or BMI is one of the complicated numbers that most people do not want anything to with. It is a measurement of body fat based on your height and weight. By using a specific formula, it will let you know whether or not you are underweight, average, overweight or obese. The formula is rather complex and looks something like this:
BMI = Weight (lbs) / [height (in)2 X 703
Example: Weight = 150lbs, Height = 5‘5“ (65“) Calculation: [ 150 / (65)2] X 703 = 24.96 BMI
See, I told you it was complex! FYI, you can find multiple websites that will do the calculation for you.
|
There are standard categories associated with BMI ranges for adults.
Below 18.5 = Underweight • 18.5 – 24.9 = Normal • 25.0 – 29.9 = Overweight • 30.0+ = Obese
**Note** these are “standards” used by the CDC, these do not apply to everyone. Bone density, muscle tone and other factors are not considered in this index.
So, now that I have probably confused you with all of this math, I will get to the point of the article.
Your BMI should be used as a foundation for your workout. Knowing your BMI will help you set better workout goals and determine which routine is best for you.
Ideally, everyone wants to have a BMI in that “normal” range, but realistically not everyone does, myself included (my BMI is 25.1). Someone that has a BMI within the normal range can focus on muscle building, endurance and strength conditioning because their mass index will allow for that. However, someone that has a BMI that is higher would be better served to practice a routine that is designed to lower their BMI to a range that will allow for a more fit based routine.
Knowing your BMI will help you do a workout that will be more effective for you. Too many times when we work out we are focused on matching our workout partner set for set, weight for weight or speed for speed. Although it is fun and competitive, the workout itself may be ineffective and set you back from your workout goals, especially if your workout partner has a lower BMI than you, which mine does. So trying to keep up with him as he builds muscle is ineffective for me, as I am trying to lower my BMI.
Moral of the story: Do YOUR workout based on YOUR goals, not someone else‘s!
Until Next Time, Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!

Fun Facts:
Interesting Facts About Memorial Day That We Bet You Didn't Know
- It was originally called Decoration Day. Although Memorial Day became its official title in the 1880s, the holiday wouldn‘t legally become Memorial Day until 1967.
- It wasn‘t always celebrated the last Monday of May. It used to be observed every May 30th. With the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971, Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday of May to ensure long weekends.
- It‘s legally required to observe a National Moment of Remembrance. I bet you didn't know that in December 2000, Congress passed a law requiring Americans to pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day to remember and honor the fallen.
- James A. Garfield delivered a rather lengthy speech at the first Memorial Day ceremony. On May 30, 1868 then Congressman Garfield gave a speech at Arlington National Cemetery in front of several thousand people. “If silence is ever golden,” Garfield said, “it must be beside the graves of 15,000 men, whose lives were more significant than speech, and whose death was a poem the music of which can never be sung.”
- Several states observe Confederate Memorial Day. Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Alabama, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee and Georgia. The days vary, but only Virginia observes Confederate Memorial Day on the last Monday of May, in accordance with the federal observance of Memorial Day.
- Waterloo, New York is considered the birthplace of Memorial Day. According to the town‘s website, in 1966 Congress unanimously passed a resolution to officially recognize Waterloo as the birthplace of the holiday.
- More than 36 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home this Memorial Day. At least, according to AAA estimates. That‘s the highest total since the recession

Important Information
Schedule Of Benefits Adjustment For Zone 1
Here at Savon we are always working hard to ensure that you are getting the highest quality dental care possible at the lowest reasonable cost.
Please keep in mind that being a member of a “discount dental plan” does not mean that you are receiving lower quality dental care! Through the power of the number of members that we have on the plan, we have been very successful in negotiating fees that are fair and equitable to both our members and our providers.
The new Schedule of Fees and benefits for the Urban areas of Arizona (Zone 1) went into effect on May 1, 2015. Please note that although the fees for some procedures have been adjusted up, many have stayed the same and some items that were not listed (no A.D.A. codes available) are now covered with a set fee.
The driving factors in the adjustments are:
- Our last adjustment was made in June of 2013.
- Rising cost of labor at dental facilities.
- Rising operating costs at dental facilities.
- Crown, bridge and denture labs have seen a rise in costs related to overhead as well and have passed the cost on to the dental offices.
The good news is:
- Cleanings did not go up.
- Some implant services not previously listed and handled as a specialist item at 25% are now listed on the Schedule of Benefits (if done by your primary general dentist).
- Certain denture related items not previously listed are now listed.
- We do not anticipate another adjustment until June of 2017.
We encourage you to visit your members resource center or cut and paste www.MySDP.com into your browser and download the new Schedule of Benefits in PDF format. This PDF is on our secure server and is guaranteed to be virus free.
This is the exact same Schedule of Benefits that your dental office has and by having it handy you will be better able to budget your dental care.
