To Your Health:
Prescription Foods That Can Cure Illness
There are thousands of home remedies and variations of food and other natural products to cure or treat almost any ailment known to man… Many of which actually work. But for particular illnesses, doctors actually prescribe certain foods as a cure or remedy. Honestly, I was surprised to learn how some of the most common illnesses are treated successfully with what most of us would consider a daily snack! See how some of these delicious treats could be helping you!!
- Cherries - One cup of tart cherries or two glasses of juice a day can ease muscle aches! Cherries contain an anti–inflammatory enzyme similar to that found in ibuprofen, only it´s natural and not as harmful over long periods of time!
- Eggs - One a day can keep your mind in focus! Eggs are packed choline, a nutrient that is great for brain health.
- Chicken - 4 oz. daily can get rid of insomnia! Chicken contains an amino acid that helps your body produce melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep.
- Peanuts - ¾ cup daily can keep anxiety at bay! Peanuts contain glutamine, an amino acid which produces gamma-amino butyric acid or (GABA). If your body doesn´t produce enough GABA, anxiety is the result.
- Peppermint - A candy, a cup of peppermint tea or sometimes even smelling peppermint almost immediately soothes an upset stomach!
- Apples - An apple a day will build up weak muscles! Particularly the peel, which contains ursolic acid which aides in producing the two most important hormones needed to build muscle.
- Oranges - One a day or 6 oz. of juice can help keep you looking young! Vitamin C helps you produce collagen, which aids in the elasticity of your skin.
- Bananas - One a day as nature´s own energy bar! Not only are they loaded with potassium, they contain magnesium, a nutrient our bodies need to produce and store energy.
- Green Tea - A glass a day will keep the water retention away! It´s a natural diuretic.
- Brown Rice - A cup a day can help manage depression! Carbohydrates help regulate the production of serotonin, the hormone that controls our mood. Brown rice is packed with complex carbs which help to keep you on an even keel.
So eat, drink, and be healthy!

In the Kitchen With Chef Tommy:
London Broil With Onion And Cucumber Salad
Recipe courtesy of Justin Chapple, (foodnetwork.com)
 |
Ingredients
- One 2–pound piece top round steak for London broil (about 2 inches thick), set at room temperature for 30 minutes
- Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 1½ tablespoons toasted sesame oil
- One 2–inch knob fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated
- 4 cloves garlic, finely grated
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 3 Persian cucumbers
- 1 small red onion
- 3 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 3 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil
- 2½ ounces mixed baby lettuces
|
Position an oven rack or broiler pan about 6 inches from the heat source. Preheat the broiler to high.
Place the steak on a large baking sheet or on the broiler pan. Using a paring knife, cut ⅛-inch–deep slits in a crosshatch pattern on both sides of the steak. Season the meat all over with salt and pepper.
Whisk the soy sauce with the sesame oil, ginger, garlic and sugar together in a small bowl. Spoon half the soy mixture on one side of the steak and rub it into the slits. Flip the steak and rub the remaining soy mixture into the slits on the opposite side.
Broil the steak until nicely browned on one side, about 5 minutes. Flip and broil until browned on the other side and an instant–read thermometer inserted in the thickest part of the steak registers 120 degrees F for rare or 125 degrees F for medium–rare, about 5 minutes more. Transfer the steak to a cutting board and let rest for 5 to 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, thinly slice the cucumbers and transfer them to a large bowl. Very thinly slice the onion crosswise, then separate the slices into rings. Add the onion, vinegar, oil and a generous pinch each of salt and pepper to the bowl; toss well. Fold in the lettuce and season to taste with salt and pepper. Thinly slice the steak against the grain and serve alongside the salad.
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Here´s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
This is a very common question asked by our members:
“I am a new member and I want to go in and get my teeth cleaned. I don't want an exam and x–rays, I just want my teeth cleaned. Every doctor on your plan has refused to clean my teeth without a exam and I don´t understand why.”
Savon’s Answer
Well first of all, your question alone tells us that our providers are doing their job and doing it well. As a new patient in any practice, an exam, x–rays, treatment plan and consulation is standard procedure.
The creation of your record establishes you as a patient and the x–rays not only show the doctor the condition of your mouth, it provides them with a picture of your mouth before they do any work on you.
The treatment plan is a road map to optimum oral health and for the most part it is not carved in stone, which means in most cases you should be able to pick and choose what you want to have done and what you want to pass on.
If your oral health is good and time permits, in most cases a cleaning can be done at the same appointment.
The above answer is provided for your information and is not a medical opinion. Remember: Always discuss your health conditions with your doctor before starting any procedure.

Unaffordable Dental Expenses for the Elderly - An Editorial
A direct reprint of a blog by Corilee Parker at dentaltalk.savondentalplan.com
 |
With our volatile economy, things are bad enough, but it is so much worse for those on limited and fixed incomes, and the real travesty is that there is very little help available for those in need of serious dental care. Medical care can be much easier to obtain.
Dental treatment is fast becoming one of the most costly of all areas in the medical industry. Basic restorative treatment is becoming a thing of the past, with dentists and dental specialists opting for the higher end products and procedures. Root canals, crowns and implants are exorbitantly high priced, as are dentures and prosthetic devices.
Having worked in the dental industry as long as I have, I´m well aware of the cost of materials vs. the mark&ndup. It´s ridiculous, and there is no regulatory agency that can help to even out the cost to make it more affordable. In fact, dental specialists are among the highest priced professionals in the country.
|
The elderly are probably the most affected by this. They are literally forced to spend money they don´t have and are finding that there are limited resources to help with the funding of treatments and procedures, as government based organizations generally will not cover anything other than extractions for adults.
A good Dental Plan can go a long way toward reducing costs for the elderly, but the fact is, sometimes it just isn´t enough.
Consequently, many elderly dental patients will go outside of the country to places such as Mexico, or will simply go without the care they need, thereby affecting their overall health. No doubt we all know of an elderly family member or friend that has had this problem.
So, the question? How long can this continue? When insurance is of little or no help and money is limited, there must be an alternative somewhere. Any ideas anyone?
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
