Stay Healthy While Flying

It‘s that time of the year again.  The holiday season!!

Traveling by plane over the holidays can be notoriously busy and stressful.  Don‘t let all the security scanners, long lines and lost luggage ruin your trip.

Most people don't think too much about it but there is far more to worry about than those minor details.

There is just something about a plane that just screams germs.  The enclosed space, the recycled air and the person who sits next to you that won‘t cover their mouth when they cough.
Luckily there are ways to help prevent getting sick while you are stuck in a small area for the duration of your flight.
  1. Wipe down your seat with antibacterial wipes – Who cares what others think?  As quIckly as they turn these planes over you never know if that seat was wiped down.

  2. If you need to sneeze, do it in the crook of your arm – Sounds gross but at least you are not spreading germs everywhere.  I know everyone does it but don't sneeze into your hands since you will be touching things.

  3. Don‘t trust the water – Planes fill their tanks wherever they are being serviced.  Never drink the tap water from the plane, stick to your bottled water.  As for the bathroom water, use a lot of soap or pull out your antibacterial wipes.

  4. Take Airborne® – Start taking it a Week or so before flying start taking some airborne (helps protect you immune system)

  5. Wear surgical masks – We know this looks ridiculous but this can help protect you from catching or spreading any germs.
Thankfully, planes themselves aren‘t the germ factory that we might think they are.  Aircraft air is filtered through HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters to trap microscopic viruses, similuar to those used in hospitals.  You are more likely to catch something at the airport than on the plane.

Have a safe, healthy and happy Thanksgiving and if you travel try not to catch or spread anything except good cheer!!!

Grandma's Kitchen With Grandma C.:
This month, I thought I would post something special for our furry friends!
Recipe via Pinterest!

Grandma C.

Pumpkin/Sweet Potato Dog Treats

Ingredients

  • ½ cup canned pumpkin or sweet potato (either fresh baked or canned, just be sure it's unsweetened)
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsps. dry milk
  • ¼ tsp. sea salt
  • 2½ cups whEat flour or brown rice flour, your choice
Mix eggs and pumpkin (or sweet potato) with a wire whisk until smooth.  Add dry milk and salt.
Begin adding flour gradually, mixing with a spatula until it becomes stiff, then mix with your hands.  The dough will be dry!

Place dough on a floured surface. Roll it out to a thickness of ¼ to ½.  Smaller thickness would be for a smaller dog…  depending on chewing ability.

Cut dough with cookie cutter and place on an ungreased baking sheet.  Perforate each piece with a fork once before you bake.

Bake 40 minutes at 350 degrees, turning the bIscuit over after the first 20 minutes.  Let them cool completely.

Notes:
  • Pumpkin and Sweet Potatoes are healthy snack options for dogs and are said to have digestive qualities as well.
  • Rice flour will make the biscuits crunchier.
  • You can make these cookies as big or as small as you like with your choice of a cookie cutter in any shape.
  • Holiday cookie cutters can make these a fun gift for the pets of family or friends!
Happy Baking!  And remember, if it looks good, eat it!!  (but not the dog treats)!!

Keeping Fit With Clayton "TR" Parker

Surviving The First Workout

The first work-out is usually the hardest.  I am sure I am not Telling you anything that you do not already know.

It is not so much the workout itself as much as it is how you feel afterward that makes it hard.  You may experience sore legs, sore abs and robot arms.  This is very common, however it does not need to be that extreme.

Here are some tips to getting through your first few workouts without hating it the next day:
  • Pace Yourself:  Easier said than done.  Walking into that gym and seeing the unlimited machines, basketball courts, pool, treadmills and free weights is like a kid in a candy store.  However, you are not going to get buff and ripped overnight.  It is going to take a lot time and effort.  So there is no need to over exert yourself trying.
  • Don‘t Max Out Your Sets:  The desire is there to see how much you can dead lift, bench press, leg press or squat, but you will regret in it in the morning.  At least for the first few workouts, lighten the load on the weights and let your muscles get used it.  After that, you can start adding weight as you go.  Before you know it, you will lifting more then you thought you could.

  • Stop when you are tired out:  You need Build up endurance and strength.  Doing a burn-out set this early your workout plan will not help that.  If you are not conditioned for doing the 5 more burn-out sets then you put yourself at risk for injury.

  • Stretch out before AND after your workout:  Stretching is imperative to injury prevention and conditioning.  I know that almost every one of you know that you are supposed to stretch out before you work-out.  We all learned that in P.E. However, you may not have known that it is just as important to stretch out afterwards.  During your work-out your muscles are strained as they contract and expand.  Stretching them out again will condition them and help bring the back to their natural state and reduce inflammation.
Now, do not get me wrong.  I am not all saying that you will not be sore the next day.  I can almost guarantee that you will be.  However, it will not be as extreme and you will be functional.

Until next, Stay Fit, Stay Healthy and Stay Strong!
