To Your Health With Jourdin Hendershot:
COPD
|
November is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month.
According to the COPD knowledge Center about 12 million Americans may be living with undiagnosed COPD and mistaking their symptoms for asthma. COPD is an umbrella term that is used to describe lung diseases such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis, all of which can cause wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness and coughing that produces a large amount of mucus.
COPD is the third leading cause of death in the United States. The main cause of COPD is smoking. Fortunately for everyone, this disease is treatable.
If you are suffering from any of the symptoms I have mentioned above, you should visit your primary care physician. They may ask you to do a simple in-office test called Spirometry. This test measures how much air you inhale, how much and how fast you exhale. Your test results will then be compared to what is normal for your age, size and sex.
|
If you are diagnosed with COPD there are many treatment options available, such as: Medications (pills or inhaler), lung therapy and in extreme cases surgery.
If you are not into the traditional treatments and are more of a natural treatment person, you may want to consider these herbs:
- Thyme –Studies have found that unique mixtures of essential oils in thyme improve the clearance of mucus from the airway and helps relax the airway for easier breathing.
- Turmeric –This herb helps reduce airway inflammation and helps prevent COPD from turning into lung cancer.
- Red Sage –This herb helps protects the lining of the blood vessels from injury when oxygen is temporarily cut off.
Remember: Always do your research and consult with your primary care physician before starting any natural treatments on your own. It‘s important to discuss any herbal treatment with your doctor because of possible harm from interaction with other medications and the herbs.
If you have questions you would like to discuss with Jourdin, feel free to drop her an email by clicking here.

*Be sure you are using pumpkin puree and not pumpkin pie filling!
**Apple Juice is acceptable as a substitute but Apple Cider is recommended as it has a stronger flavor.
***For the adults in the household, add a TBSP of bourbon to the mixture before cooking to add a nice Holiday twist!
Enjoy! And remember, if it looks and smells good, eat it!!

Rest, Then Rehab = Recovery
|
Being injured is annoying, especially for someone like me that is active. If you are anything like me, you cannot wait to get back up and running by rehabbing the area as quickly as possible.
This is ever so true for me right now. Through a combination of throwing a baseball, doing push-ups and using my exercise bands, I have managed to injure my right elbow. I'm not quite sure what is wrong with it but when I felt the injury occur I would not let it stop me.
Over the next couple of weeks I would down a couple ibuprofen and then go “rehab” it on the exercise bands. It did not work. It gradually got worse and worse, to the point to where it hurt to pick up a cup to take a sip or even squeeze my hand to put my car in reverse.
|
Now, I am the type that would rather attempt to amputate my own arm before I would even consider going to the doctor, so there was no way the doc was going to get a visit over this, at least in his office. It turns out that one of my friends is indeed a doctor so I went to his house, explained what had happened and how I was dealing with it. I explained my extensive rehab plan that would help me recover with ease. He was quick to point out how ineffective my plan has been. He didn‘t write a prescription, instead he gave me a formula. Rest, Then Rehab = Recovery.
Resting is the first step in the recovery process and is the one that is most often overlooked. When an injury occurs, there is trauma to injured area. That area needs to be rested and given time to start the healing process prior to starting any rehab. Then, when you do start the rehab, it needs to be done in short sessions with a period of rest in between.
So for all of us that like to say “tape me up and send me back out”, we have to do that dreaded thing called “hold ourselves back” and let ourselves rest before we rehab and recover.
On a side note, my elbow is getting better, still some soreness but I have better mobility than I did a couple weeks ago. As hard as it is… Rest, Then Rehab = Recovery.
Until next time: Stay Fit, Stay Healthy, Stay Strong!

Dr. Robin C. Sturms
Our second spotlight stays in Bullhead City, Arizona and shines on Dr. Robin C. Sturms
We would also like to welcome Dr. Sturms and staff to our network. Although this is not a large practice, they provide quality care in a residential facility. One of their patients wrote:
“ The waiting room feels like you are in a relatives living room, which is wonderful! The seats are extremely comfortable. The magazine selection is good. The place has natural sunlight. It's far better than a sterile, cold, florescent lit hospital facility type practice. Nobody enjoys trips to the dentist, so all the comfort you can get is very much welcomed. All the staff I encountered were very friendly. The receptionist, assistant, and Dr. Sturms himself.”
The practice is located at 1271 Baseline Rd, Bullhead City, AZ 86442. The phone number is (928)458-7968. They do not have a website.
We invite you to visit either of these two fine dental centers and say thank you for joining the Savon family.

Here’s Your Answer
Questions From Our Members
E. Davidson of Houston, Texas asks:
"When you update the fees the dentists can charge us, do you mail out new Schedule of Benefits to us and if not, why?
Savon’s Answer
The answer is yes and no. Yes, we mail them out when you renew your plan. Other than that, no we don't. The reason that we don't mail them out is it‘s cost prohibitive.
We are able to keep our membership fees low because we monitor our administrative costs very closely. A mass mailing of any sort would mean that we would have to raise our membership fees to offset the cost of the mailings.
All our current fee schedules are available for download in a PDF version on our website. If you don‘t have internet access, please contact our Customer Care Center at 800-809-3494 to have a current one sent to you.

Summer's Gone… Welcome Winter Visitors!
|
Well we've made it through another summer and now enter what most people feel is the best part of the year. Days get shorter and cooler; some will have snow and some will just have pleasant temperatures. With our corporate office in Phoenix, Arizona, we will just have to settle for the pleasant temperatures, but that‘s why we put up with the 115 degrees throughout the summer.
I would like to welcome our winter visitors back and remind them that Phoenix is a big, fast-paced city. Be careful on the highways and keep in mind that some of our local residents don‘t have the patience that they probably should have when driving around the city. Try your best to keep up with the traffic pattern or at least, stay as far to the right as safely possible.
|
The next two months look like they are going to be really exciting. November 8th will determine who will lead our county for the next four to eight years. Although we all have a favorite candidate, the most important thing is your vote. It doesn‘t matter who you vote for, what matters is that you vote.
The metro area here has a lot of people that can use some help over the holidays. Savon supports the efforts of the Salvation Army but there are also a host of other fantastic organizations doing the same work and let‘s not forget the food drives at the local grocery stores. If you find that you have a little extra money or can buy an extra can of food, these charities would greatly appreciate your donation.
From all of us at Savon, have a happy Thanksgiving and enjoy the fine temperatures as we move into the Holiday Season.
