Is Fluoride Really Necessary?

Most of you at some point have received in-office fluoride treatments after your or your child's cleaning.  Although these treatments are not required, they often come highly recommended by both your dentist and your hygienist for their many benefits.

Fluoride is a natural occurring cavity fighting mineral often found in drinking water and most toothpastes.  Fluoride has been used clinically in dental offices since the early 1930's when physicians and dentists discovered that patients who consumed drinking water containing fluoride suffered 75% less cavities than people who did not drink the fluoridated water.  Since then, studies show that the minerals in fluoride help harden the enamel on teeth which in turn helps cut down on the amount of cavities a tooth may be susceptible to.

Fluoride also helps remineralize calcified enamel on teeth and has been used to treat areas of the teeth along the gumline that cause sensitivity due to erosion or recession of the gums, leaving the dentin, or 2nd layer of the tooth under the enamel, exposed to the elements.

While there has been controversy as to the health risks of fluoride, the ADA and the FDA have both concluded that clinical routine fluoride treatments and the trace amounts of fluoride found in toothpastes pose no major health risks to the public if used according to the labels or if applied by a dental health professional.  Should you have questions as to whether or not fluoride is a recommended treatment for you, do not hesitate to consult with your dental care provider.

What Is A Paraffin Wax Treatment?

Paraffin wax treatments are like spa treatments that are intended to soften the skin.  Paraffin wax is usually applied to your hands and feet to help soften those calluses, dry/cracked feet!  Paraffin wax is not like the wax that is for hair removal, this is a type of wax that bonds to your skin.

Paraffin wax is a soft wax, which does not take a long time to melt.  The wax is placed in anything that you can heat and melt it, for an example an old Crockpot.  When the wax is melted the assistant will have you dip your hand /foot in and out of the wax 3-4 times to make sure your hand/foot is covered.  Next they will wrap your hand/feet in plastic, then will put a warm towel around the plastic and let you sit for about a half hour until the wax is cool.

Once the wax is cool the assistant will peel the wax off in one piece!  Your skin is left feeling very soft!  Usually after the assistant will give you a mini massage by your hand/ feet with lotion!

Here are some other benefits of paraffin wax therapy:
  • Arthritis
  • Scar tissue
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Eczema
  • and many more…

Got A Common Cold? Get some Echinacea!

Today, people use echinacea to shorten the duration of the common cold and flu and reduce symptoms.  It‘s also recommend to help boost the immune system and help the body fight infections.

Studies have shown that the herb can make you feel better faster.  Several clinical trials have shown that people who take echinacea as soon as they feel sick reduce the severity of their cold and have fewer symptoms than those who do not take the herb.

Echinacea is a perennial herb native to the midwestern region of North America.  It has tall stems, bears single pink or purple flowers, and has a central cone that is usually purple or brown in color.  The large cone is actually a seed head with sharp spines that resemble a stiff comb.  Named for the prickly scales in its large conical seed head, the herb resembles the spines of an angry hedgehog.

Native Americans may have used echinacea for more than 400 years to treat infections and wounds.  People have used echinacea to treat scarlet fever, syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning, and diphtheria.  Although this herb was popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, its use began to decline in the United States after the introduction of antibiotics.

Echinacea is available in extracts, tinctures, tablets, capsules, and ointments.  It is also available in combination with other immune boosting herbs, vitamins, and minerals.

Which Is Better, Standard Dental Floss Or A Water Pick?

Dr. Alan Carr of the Mayo Clinic says:

“Standard dental floss is the most effective tool for cleaning the tight spaces between the teeth. You can also use dental floss to scrape up and down the sides of each tooth.

A water pick (oral irrigator) is a device that aims a stream of water at your teeth. A water pick can help remove food particles from your teeth and may help reduce bleeding and gum disease–but it isn't generally considered a substitute for brushing and flossing.

If plain dental floss gets stuck in your teeth, use the waxed variety. If you have a hard time handling dental floss, try a floss holder. Other options might include special brushes, picks or sticks designed to clean between the teeth.”

Insurance Insight

An In depth Look at Medical Insurance - Part 5

Every carrier has a pre-conception waiting period when you do buy a plan with maternity so even getting the maternity plan wouldn‘t help.  The average waiting period is six to 12 months.  Maternity adds anywhere from $150 to $250 per month to the premium.  After all, even the healthiest pregnancy will run over $5,000.  Maternity is a benefit that must be taken at the time the application is made –it can never be added later.  Otherwise, people would wait till the week before they delivered to add it – then, after all is said and done, who pays for what the carrier has to pay out?

No carrier will take someone already pregnant (other than employer-provided group) and no carrier will take the husband of a pregnant spouse or the parent of a pregnant dependent (i.e., under age 19 living at home).  Reason: his/her carrier would be responsible for complications of pregnancy even if the spouse or child is not on the policy.  A complication of pregnancy is defined as anything that is life-threatening to the mother and by law, is covered by all carriers, whether a maternity benefit is in place or not.  Complications to the unborn child, on a plan that has no maternity benefit, are not covered because the child is not a covered entity.

If you knew you were going to have a car accident, you would have insurance.  If you think you want to get pregnant, get a plan with maternity.  If you didn‘t plan on it…  it isn‘t the carrier‘s fault.

Help Savon Adopt A Family For The Holidays

$1.00 can make a difference

For the 3rd year in a row Savon will be adopting a family for the holidays.

We are asking every member of the plan to help us in this endeavor by sending us $1.00.  Savon will match the total of the donations and the office personnel will do the holiday shopping.

Once the shopping is complete, an itemized list of how much was taken in and where it was spent will be available on the website.  We hope to be able to start the shopping by November 15th with delivery of both food and presents made by November 24th.

The family that we will adopt will be chosen by The Salvation Army  and the goods will be delivered to the family by them.  Remember:  $1.00 means very little to most of us but with the power of our membership, it can make a BIG difference in the life of a family.

Please send your $1.00 to Savon Dental Plan Charity at PO Box 6055, Glendale, AZ 85312 and let's work together to make a difference!!
