Quote Of The Month:  "Halloween was confusing.  All my life my parents said, "Never take candy from strangers." And then they dressed me up and said, "Go beg for it." I didn‘t know what to do! I‘d knock on people‘s doors and go, "Trick or treat." "No thank you."" - (Rita Rudner - American Comedian 1953 - Present)

Smoking And Exercising

At first glance, smoking and exercising do not seem to go hand in hand.  Generally smokers do not have a great stamina or over all good health.  Inhaling cigarette smoke has many affects on the body and can affect your performance.  Cigarette smoke causes tissue inflammation, narrowing airways and allows less oxygen into the body.  Although smokers put their health in jeopardy by smoking, they can offset some of the health affects just by exercising.

The best type of exercise for a smoker is cardio.

Jogging - This expands your lungs and fills them with oxygen.  Once the oxygen goes to your lungs it is dispersed into your blood cells.  While smoking decreases your lung capacity and produces phlegm that clogs your lungs making you cough all the time, jogging will improve the flow of oxygen and will break up the phlegm.

Weights – The majority of smokers have high blood pressure due to smoking, and doing exercises that increase the heart rate can cause quick fatigue.  Lifting weights is a great way to exercise without pushing yourself.  You can lift slowly and use as much weight as you want.  Depending on the type of weights, you can work multiple areas of the body, free weights for arms/legs and bench weights for the arms/chest.

Crunches – These help to strengthen your core area, and helps eliminate fat around your stomach.  This is low intensity so shortness of breath should be minimal.

If you are out shape a brisk walk would be best recommendation to start with, then work your way to more intense workouts.

Easy Pumpkin Spice Pudding Poke Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 pkg Yellow or White cake mix
  • 2 pkgs Jello Pumpkin Spice pudding and pie filling*
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 4 cups cold milk
  • 1 regular container Cool Whip

Prepare cake mix as the package instructs.  Remove from oven, and immediately while cake is still hot, poke holes all over the cake about 1 inch apart, going all the way down to the pan.  The handle of a wooden spoon (round) works best for this step.

After you've poked the holes in the cake, combine the pudding mix and 1 cup powdered sugar in a mixing bowl.  Adding the milk in slowly, beat with a mixer for approximately1 minute.

Make sure to stop beating while pudding is still thin! It may take a little less than one minute.  (Use care: If you overbeat, it will thicken and you won't be able to pour it over the holes in the cake.)  Then quickly pour about half of the pudding mix right over the warm cake.  Make sure to pour it evenly.  It should easily fill up the holes.

Frosting:

Let the remaining pudding thicken up slightly, then fold in the cool whip and use it to frost the cooled cake.  Chill before serving.  Store the remaining cake in the refrigerator.

*The Pumpkin Spice pudding mix is only put out seasonally by the Kraft company, so it won'tbe on the shelves long!  Get it while you can!

Importance Of Proper Warm-Ups!

Everyone who participates in any sporting event knows that there is a risk for injury.  With school sports now in full swing, it is the goal of every player, coach and parent to see to it their athlete gets through the season without any major injury.  A lot of time is spent teaching the proper fundamentals of the sport to ensure that the mechanics are correct and done safely.

One thing that is often slacked on is the warm ups.  From a coach‘s standpoint it takes away from valuable practice time.  From a player‘s standpoint they hate doing the stretches and calisthenics and would rather be working on their game.  The one thing that is being overlooked is the fact that most of the injuries that sideline a player can be prevented by properly warming up.

So this begs the question.  What effect does warming up have on the body?  Here are some of the direct physical effects that it has:
  • Release of adrenaline

  • Increases cardio enabling oxygen in the blood to travel with greater speed and at a higher volume

  • Increases production of synovial fluid located between the joints to reduce friction

  • Increase of temperature in the muscles

  • Decreased viscosity of blood

  • Increase of muscle metabolism

  • Increase in speed of nerve impulse conduction

  • Removal of lactic acid
Here are some tips for proper warm ups:
  1. Consistency – Perform each warm up activity the same way and same amount of time every time.

  2. Relevance – Perform warm up activities that are relevant to your sporting activity. This will ensure that the proper muscles are bring warmed up.

  3. Stretching – Yes, believe it or not this IS a warm up routine. Be sure to hold each stretch for consistent amount of time and not to hyperextend.

  4. Hydrate – Make sure you drink plenty of fluids while warming up even if you do not feel thirsty.
As always, make sure you refer to your coach or athletic trainer for what warm up activities they would advise to help keep you safe!
