Cohen’s Corner - Straight talk from the Doctor:Cosmetic Veneers
Why do they always have 2 different prices?

Welcome to another article from Cohen’s corner.  Before we get started with today’s topic, I just wanted to say thank-you for all of your wonderful e-mails and letters.  Sometimes I research and write these articles thinking about who is reading them and wondering if they are enjoying them.  From your responses, I know that you are reading and enjoying them and I just wanted to say thank-you!  Keep those e-mails and letters coming and if there is any particular topic you would like covered, please don’t hesitate to send it to me.  I can’t promise that I will cover all of the requests, but the ones that get requested the most number of times will certainly be covered!

Now on to today’s topic of cosmetic veneers:  why do they always have 2 different prices?  Veneers have two different prices because, even though you think you are getting the same product for a bargain basement price, you really aren't.  There are two types of veneers recognized in the field of dentistry today:  the porcelain veneer and the microfill composite veneer.  Each veneer has a different price because each veneer is made completely different as far as material, texture, actual fabrication, stain-resistant ability, and longevity.

The more expensive of the two veneers is made out of porcelain, which is a melted glass material.  This material is the same material that fine porcelain china is made of.  This porcelain veneer has a glaze to it so as to be almost completely stain resistant.  The porcelain veneer is usually fabricated in the indirect method, which most often requires two appointments.  The first appointment is for the preparation and impression of the teeth for the veneers (the impressions are sent off to the dental lab with a prescription from the dentist as to how to fabricate the porcelain veneers) after which a temporary of some sort is placed on the teeth.  The second appointment about 1 ½ to 2 weeks later is for the fitting and placement of the veneers on the teeth.  Again, the porcelain veneer is the more expensive of the two types of veneers and by far the better of the two.  You will find that some dental offices will not do the less expensive veneers because of doctor and patient disappointment of the final product.

The less expensive veneers are made with a microfilled composite material that is usually done in one appointment.  The teeth are prepped for the composite material and then the material is placed on the teeth for contour and shade.  After the material is placed on the teeth, it is polished to a high luster and sealed.  The drawback to this technique, in my opinion, is that there are always microscopic voids in this restoration and that is an opening where stain will get into and give a poor long-term esthetic prognosis for the restoration.  (it will stain in a relativity short period of time)

Again, if you are looking for a good, long-term cosmetic result in the veneer restoration, spend a little extra money and get the porcelain veneer done.  In my 30+ years of dentistry I have not come across any dental indemnity insurance that covers cosmetic veneers or, for that matter, any cosmetic dentistry at all.

Have a wonderful September

Congratulations to Mr. Frank Osborne:  Winner of our August T. V. Drawing

Mr Frank Osborne of Peoria, Arizona was lasts months winner of a 20" flat screen television. We wish to thank everyone that entered the drawing, the response was terrific.

When Mr. Osborne picked up his new T.V., he told us that he really didn't need a T.V., he just enters every contest that he can.  He said that this was the first contest that he had won and would probably give the T. V. to some charity or civic group.

Way to go Frank.

Schools Back in Session

This is the time of year that kids dread and parents look forward to.  SCHOOL IS BACK IN SESSION!!  Please make sure that you are aware of the children walking or riding bikes to and from school and REMEMBER:  THE SPEED LIMIT IN A SCHOOL ZONE IS 15 MPH

Now is also a good time to check out our Student Plan.  This plan is great for the student in college.  The cost is very reasonable and the benefits are the same as the Savon Basic Plan.

Savon Gift Certificates - A great holiday gift

As the year seems to fly by some of us forget about our dental needs.  Most live by the old saying if it isn't broke don't fix it.  In fact, in the long run that could end up costing you more.  It is important to go at least once a year, (every six months would be better) for cleaning and checkups.  It is similar on how we do the oil change in our cars just to keep the running smooth.  We need to maintain our teeth to keep them in good condition.

With the holidays approaching what better gift to give to someone who may need dental work than a Savon Dental gift card.  Purchase one for a friend or family member and as a way of saying “Thank You” for the referral we will add two free months to your account.
