Keeping Fit With Jourdin Hendershot:

Why Rest Is As Important As Exercising

Is it your resolution to become fit?  Do you over exercise then feel guilty because you took a day off?  If you do… DON‘T!!!  The body repairs and strengthens itself between workouts.

Resting is a key factor in exercising.  Rest is physically necessary so the body can strengthen, repair and rebuild.  Setting up resting days into your exercising routine is important because this is the time for your body to restore energy and repair damaged tissues.

It‘s easy to over-train, but it pays to do less.  Constant training can cause a weight-loss plateau, sleeping problems, mood changes, bigger appetite and can often leave you feeling burnt out.

There are two different types of recovery, Long and short term.

Short term - (Also known as “Active recovery”):  This occurs within hours of an intense work out.  Active recovery refers to engaging in low intensity workouts during the cool-down phase.  Within 15 minutes of your workout you will need to replenish your body with carbohydrates such as fruit or juice.

Long term:  This is more for people who may be training for sports.  With this intense type of training your recovery period may include days or weeks.  Again 15 minutes after your workout you will need to replenish your body with carbohydrates such as fruit or juice.

If you are starting to feel tired or burnt out you might be over-training.  Keep a training log to help monitor your workouts.  Listen to your body; it will help you determine your recovery needs.

Low Carb Dream Food-Zucchini Pizza
Easy, easy easy.  And tasty too!

Ingredients

  • 3 medium to large zucchini's
  • Sea salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Garlic powder (to taste)
  • Olive Oil
  • 1 small jar pizza sauce
  • Shredded cheese (I personally like the Italian 4 cheese type)

The rest of the toppings are as per your personal choice.  Everyone likes a different topping on their pizza.  You can use veggies, meats, olives… whatever your taste buds desire!

Slice each Zucchini in half lengthwise.  Lightly carve out the center seed portion with the tip of a spoon.  There isn't much to remove, but I do this because it allows room for a few extra toppings.

*Tip:  I like to take a thin slice off the bottom of the Zucchini so it will sit squarely on the baking sheet.

Dab the top of the Zucchini with a paper towel to dry the surface a little bit.  Brush with olive oil and sprinkle garlic powder, salt and pepper on the Zucchini.  Top with Pizza Sauce, any of your favorite toppings, and cheese.

Place on a baking sheet lined with foil.  Bake in a 375 degree oven for approx. 20-30 minutes.

Ovens vary, so watch, and don't overbake the Zucchini!  Test with a fork after 20 minutes. You want it soft but not mushy.  Recipe serves 2-3 people.

Low carb dieters, enjoy!!!

To Your Health: with Clayton "TR" Parker

Vial Of Life + File Of Life

I recently attended a meeting of health services professionals.  At this meeting a gentleman from Sun Health Services gave a presentation on the advancements in programs that they have going on there.  There was one program in particular that caught my interest.  It is called Vial of Life and File of Life.

The Vial of Life program has been around for quite some time and is rather popular in the elderly community.  However, for someone with an extensive medical history or a chronic illness, regardless of age, the program would be beneficial as well.  The Vial of Life is basically a large prescription bottle that is given to the patient.  This bottle contains documents of the patient‘s advanced plan, medical history, current prescribed medication, power of attorney and any other medical information that would be relevant in the case of an emergency.

The vial is then placed in the refrigerator at the patient‘s home and a decal is placed on the front window of the residence to let the paramedics know that a Vial of Life is present in the house.  The paramedics know that the refrigerator is the location of the vial.  In the event of an emergency, the paramedics would then retrieve the vial and be able to obtain the information needed to administer onsite help and pass the information on to the hospital.

With the advancement of digital technology over the years, Sun Health has now expanded the program to the “File of Life” section.  With this program, all of the necessary documents are placed on a flash dive instead of in the bottle.  This allows the information to become portable.  The patient can put the drive in their purse or luggage, on a necklace or wear it as a bracelet.  This is ideal for someone who is on the go or who travels a lot as well.  All of the information is readily available to the medical professional that would need it.

This program is really simple to enroll in and comes at no cost to you.  They provide all of the medical forms that you need so you can just fill in what would be applicable to you.  Also, if you have any personal medical forms that you already have in your possession they can be placed in the vial or scanned and added to the flash drive as well.

If you think that you or a loved one would benefit from this program, I invite you to check out the Sun Heath website and go over the information.

The above health material is provided as an information service.  It should not be used for diagnostic purposes nor is it intended to take the place of the important relationship between you and your doctor.

News From Inside Your Dental Plan

Dave

Dave Swartz Cancer Fund

Dave Swartz has been a member of the Savon family for the past 11 years.  During that time, we have come to know and love him personally as well as professionally.

As a PGA golf instructor, he has provided our family, friends, Savon members and even Savon providers with many years of expert golf instruction… and to his credit, he has the patience of a saint!

He has worked with the youth in this community to get them involved in the game of golf.  He has participated in and helped us to orchestrate several golf fundraisers over the years for causes that our company supports.

Always willing to lend a hand and get involved in a cause, Dave is a steadfast leader and friend; a person of integrity and character.  Dave is now fighting a battle of his own, against invasive melanoma cancer.

Because he is a self-employed instructor, he has no health insurance.  Dave has been fighting this battle using alternative methods but now, after 2 trips to the hospital and further testing, he has come to the realization that he needs to seek more traditional treatments such as radiation.

Dave needs our help.

We all know how cancer affects so many lives and how expensive the treatment for it is.  If you would like to learn more about Dave‘s plight, send him words of encouragement or even donate a dollar or two, please visit his special webpage.  Those of us who know Dave wish him the best and even if you don‘t know him, words of encouragement can mean almost as much as financial help.

Let‘s help Dave win his fight against cancer.
