Healthy Perks Of Dark Chocolate

Super-foods don‘t just come from your supermarkets produce section.  In fact, those dark chocolate candy bars in the checkout line now qualify!

Can eating dark chocolate really be good for your health?

Studies prove that dark chocolate – sweet, rich and delicious is good for more than curing a broken heart.

These studies have shown that people who eat dark chocoLate have healthier cardiovascular systems, better blood circulation, lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels.  Cardiologists recommend dark chocolate should be included into a life plan that includes exercise, eating healthy foods, getting enough sleep and maintaining a healthy weight. Here are some more health benefits of eating dark chocolate:
  • Weight loss – Dark chocolate is full of MUFAs (monounsaturated Fats); eating a diet high in these healthy fats can rev your metabolism to burn fat and calories.  It also helps by curbing cravings for salty/sweet snacks.  So a nibble of dark chocolate here and there can slow down digestion so you feel full longer and eat less between meals.

  • Stress Relief – Eating one average sized dark chocolate candy bar (1.4 oz) each day reduced the levels of the stress hormone cortisol as well as the “fight- or – flight” hormones known as catecholamines.  Eat half of the candy bar in the morning and the other half in the afternoon.

  • Sun protection – The flavonols in cocoa can protect against sun-induced damage, improve blood flow to the skin and increase skin density and hydration.

  • Higher intelligence – Next time you‘re working on a project for work/school grab a dark chocolate candy bar.  Not only will it help your body ward off the effects of stress but it will boost your brain power.  Researchers found that the flavonols in cocoa boost blood flow to the brain for 2-3 hours, which improves performance and alertness.

Cold Corn Salad

Ingredients

  • 1 firm avocado, diced
  • 2 cans Mexi-Corn
  • 1 lb tiny salad shrimp, cooked and chilled
  • Juice of 1 lime
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

Place corn, avocado and shrimp in a small mixing bowl.  Cut the lime in half and squeeze bOth halves on the corn mixture.  Toss, cover with a tight lid and chill for 1 hour before serving.

I recommend adding the salt and pepper to individual servings.

This is the simplest, easiest salad recipe that is so tasty!  It's perfect for a summer get together or even a light lunch to pack for work.

*Thank you to Dawn Lawler for sharing this amazing recipe!

Until next month…  Remember, if it looks good, eat it!!

Don‘t Throw Calisthenics Away!!

If there has been one consistency through the decades of work-outs and exercising it has calisthenics.

Yes, I mean those jumping jacks, squat thrusts, pushups, sit-ups and jogging in place that we all used to hate being forced to do in P.E. class as a kid.  I remember as a kid participating in a “sit-down” in school to protest these calisthenics in P.E., deeming them as “cruel and unusual punishment”. (By the way, that did not work.  It only succeeded in us having to doing the mile run every class for the next few weeks).

However, those dreaded exercises that were forced upon us before we could go play kickball or whatever activity the P.E. teacher had planned for us served much more of a purpose than we, as kids, may have ever thought.

Which leads to my question for this month. Are calisthenics being tossed aside?

More and more emphasis is being put on bulking up, muscle gain, weight drop or increase and physical strength gain than ever before.  A fitness plan of push-up and sit-up sets are being replaced by vitamin supplements and passes to the weight room as the sports world moves in to the “results NOW” era of fitness and training.  It is working.

No matter what sport you are in, there is a supplement and weight-room plan for you.  Wrestlers who want to lose or gain weight to fight in a different class can now take certain vitamins and make it happen.  However with the quicker results comes more frequent injuries and worse injuries.  Although people are getting more “ripped” or more upper or lower body power, they are lacking endurance.

That‘s where the calisthenics come into play.  Calisthenics are very beneficial to conditioning and staying in shape.  Each activity increases blood flow and oxygen flow to the brain and muscles making them healthier and increasing their durability.  Healthy conditioning of your muscles leads to muscle building and also more endurance.

To put it in perspective, if you want to be a running back that is bigger and stronger but can only run 25 yards at a time and need to take break after every run, then eliminate calisthenics from your warm-up routine.  However, if you want to be a balanced running back who can push through the line, stay healthy, run up and down the field and last a whole game then you need to be conditioned.  You get that conditioning through calisthenics.  Still don‘t believe me?  Look at the pregame routine of the college and proFessional athletes and see how many calisthenics are in their routine.

So now that I have preached to you about the importance caliSthenics, next month I will talk about the benefits of them and which exercises are best for whatever you trying to work on.

Until next month, Stay Healthy, Stay Fit, Stay Strong, and drop down and give me 10!
