Can Hypnosis Work As An Anesthetic?
|
Have you ever been hypnotized? If so, what was your reason? Was it to help reduce stress and anxiety, gain control of past traumas, or just for fun during a renaissance festival act? Whatever the reason was, I hope you were able to benefit from it!
According to a new clinical report published on July 28, 2021, in the Journal of American Dental Association “Hypnosis is a safe, effective, and inexpensive technique that could be used in place of anesthesia during dental procedures.” Is this something you would be willing to try?
The study:
Three women between the ages of 34 and 39 were recruited to have an oral surgery procedure performed using hypnosis and no other form of anesthesia.
Prior to their oral surgery procedure all participants had to complete two assessments which included: “perioperative risk, level of anxiety, hypnotic susceptibility, and capacity to develop complete hypnotic analgesia.”
|
On the day of their surgeries, the participants were told to focus on their bodies and breathing and to also picture themselves laying on a beach.
Next the hypnotist proceeded with the following steps:
- “They suggested they were administering local anesthetic, while repeatedly touching and rubbing the cheek.
- They said local anesthesia caused the sensation on the cheek.
- They said the sensation was a sign that the cheek, teeth, and gums were going numb.
- They suggested the women not pay attention to the operative setting, including the teeth, gum, and skin.”
Within 9 minutes all participants were in the state of hypnosis.
The results:
- “The 34–year–old woman underwent a 15–minute third molar surgery and a 120–minute mucogingival surgery.
- The 47–year–old woman underwent a 15–minute third molar surgery.
- The 49–year–old woman underwent a 45–minute procedure to remove a first molar and place an implant, as well as a 120–minute procedure for maxillary bone augmentation plus two implants.“
You may think hypnosis is a brand new idea that medical and dental professionals are using instead of traditional anesthesia, however this dates back to many centuries ago.
It was around the 17th and 18th century when medical professionals started shunning the use of hypnosis due to political and cultural reasons. However, it has recently started making a comeback!

C. Roberts of Salem, Oregon asks:
“I am in the middle of a treatment plan and I received the new fee schedule for my area. How does this affect my treatment plan?”
Savon’s Answer
Since you began your treatment under the prior fee schedule, all work associated with that treatment plan should be done in accordance with the fee schedule that was in effect at the time you began treatment.
Please keep in mind that even though you are under the old fee schedule for this treatment plan, if additional work that is not on the treatment plan is needed, that work will be charged according to the new fee schedule.

Small Molecules Give Coffee Its Distinct Taste, Feel
A direct reprint from an article at DrBicuspid.com

Aside from cream and sugar, small molecules produce coffee‘s distinctive feeling in the mouth, according to research presented on August 24 at the virtual American Chemical Society (ACS) meeting.
Researchers led by principal investigator Christopher Simons, PhD, explored four coffee attributes experienced in the oral cavity: chalkiness, mouth coating, astringency, and thickness. They found that particular molecules contribute to what they called coffee‘s “mouthfeel” as well as its taste.
Melanoidin compounds produced coffee‘s astringency, while 3– and 4–caffeoylquinic acid produced mouth coating. The findings could help coffee makers better refine processing and roasting conditions, according to a statement from the ACS.
|
“We‘ve known that coffee itself can impact textural sensations, and it was traditionally thought to be because of sugars and lipids,” Simons, an assistant professor of food sciences and technology, said in the statement. “But our team finds that this feeling may actually be driven by small molecules, which is kind of unique.”
Until next time; brush, floss and keep smiling!
