Cohen’s Corner – Straight talk from the Doctor:
Piercings: Not Human Dentition Friendly!
Many of you have written and wondered if lip and tongue piercing are hazardous to human teeth. The answer is a simple and unequivocal yes!
As most of us know, the human body is a miraculous machine. As we get older we understand the concept of “magnificent machine” much more then the younger generation.
For those of us that have gone through the “rebellious stage” of life where we show the past generation (our parents) that we are different, better, and more daring then they were in
their early years, you know what I‘m thinking. For those of you that are going through this stage now; not only don‘t you know what I‘m thinking but even if I told you, you
wouldn‘t agree with me anyway. Being that this is not a philosophy paper I will be skipping the “lecture”.
Back to the question at hand! Let‘s take piercings as they relate to the teeth one at a time.
Tongue Piercing:
Probably the most damaging piercing, as far as the teeth are concerned, is the tongue piercing. Dentists are seeing more and more incidences of tongue piercings chipping,
fracturing, and damaging teeth beyond repair. If this isn‘t a good enough reason to never pierce your tongue, how about these? It is my opinion that you are much more
likely to get infections in your mouth if you have a tongue piercing. Also, depending on where in the tongue the piercing is placed, you can end up with distorted speak
patterns because much of our speech is predicated on where and how the tongue is placed against the teeth.
Lip Piercing:
Lip piercings, although not desirable, probably are better for the teeth then the tongue piercings. Lip piercings I believe, depending on where in the lip they are placed,
can lead to distorted speak patterns and increased infections especially at the corners of the mouth. Fortunately these are the only two piercings that I know of that they have
come up with that affect the teeth. Kids will be kids and everyone over 40 years old knows what I am talking about. We all “rebelled” against our parents; it‘s human nature
to show that you are a “grown individual” but for the ones of us who have already “been there, done that” it is this man‘s opinion that we need to guide the young. Someone once
said, “what a shame that youth is wasted on the young”. I say with a little loving guidance, we can get the youth through that time of life when they think they have to destroy
their body to show the previous generation that they are different, tough, and grown up.
Again thanks to all who send in questions about their oral health, it is my pleasure to answer them. Have a fantastic September and, in case you haven‘t noticed, I think the summer is coming to an end.

Who Owns my Dental Records, Me Or The Dentist?
It is a common misunderstanding that once you pay for x-rays, they become your property, as well as your dental records. In all actuality, your records do belong to the dentist. They are required by law to keep your records on file for a specified period of time. When you are x-rayed and evaluated by a dentist, you are paying for that service, not the records themselves.
You may obtain a copy of your records for a small fee. If you intend to take your records to a new dentist, there is a risk that they may not be able to read the copies of the x-rays, in which case, you might be better off establishing new dental records.

To your health:
Many people avoid going to the dentist because of the expense. The only one that suffers in the long run is you, by avoiding necessary dental treatment. Going to the dentist can be expensive.
Here's the good news. Many dental offices are offering monthly payment plans. Most of these monthly plans are provided by the dental office through an outside health care financing company.
The process is usually very easy, consisting of simply filling out a short credit application. After a quick credit check, you can usually receive an answer right in the dental office.
Savon give you discounted fees and financing plans through your dentist can be a great way to afford the dental treatment that you need by allowing you to make monthly payments. Some of the payment plans can go up to five years. There are even interest free options available through some financing plans.
If you have been putting off dental treatment because of the cost, talk to the dental office and see if they offer any financing plans.
