Cohen’s Corner – Straight talk from the Doctor:
Why do I need a Periodontal Examination?
One of the biggest questions we get asked from our members is what is a periodontal examination and why do I need it? Periodontal disease is the dental term for bone loss around the tooth structure that holds the tooth in place as you chew. When bone loss around the tooth reaches a critical point, the tooth starts moving as you chew. This movement for the most part leads to a continual breakdown of the supporting bone structure around the tooth. Unchecked, this bone loss process can lead to the eventual loss of the tooth.
A periodontal examination is done by the dentist, or hygienist, in the following manner. First radiographs (x-rays) are taken of the teeth and supporting bone structure. Next a probing is done in the mouth in which the practioner takes six (6) measurements around each tooth. These probing measurements are the distance between the top of the gingiva (gums) and the top of the bone that holds the tooth in place. A normal healthy distance, which is measured in millimeters, is 2-3 millimeters. Anything greater than 3 millimeters can indicate gingivitis; this is an inflammation of the gingival (gum) tissue, all the way to full blown periodontal disease, which is bone loss around the tooth to the point at which the tooth needs to be extracted.
Being that periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent diseases known to man, the standard of care in the dental office is to always evaluate the periodontal(supporting structures around the teeth) health of the patient before any dental reconstructive work is done. br>
To summarize, if you have any dental work done except for emergency procedures, before treating a periodontal problem, you could be wasting your time and money.
