A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions
EndodonticsEndodontics, commonly known as root canal treatment, is the science of preserving the human dentition (teeth) so as not to be artificially replaced when the pulp (nerve) of the tooth degenerates (dies).
When the ‘live’ part of a tooth ‘dies’ most people think that the tooth has to be extracted (removed). With today’s modern dentistry, this is most often not the case. Endodontics (root canal treatment) saves tens of thousands of teeth yearly. Done with the care of a microsurgeon, ‘root canal treatment’ is one of the most successful procedures done today in dentistry. The irreversibly damaged part of the tooth inside the root (pulp) is carefully removed and the void is filled with a filling material so as to allow healing to occur in the tooth and the structures around it. Once the ‘root canal treatment’ is done, this tooth still functions as an important part of the chewing process for the individual. |
