A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions
ImplantsImplantology is the science of placing an artificial device in the maxilla (upper) and/or mandible (lower) jaw bone to support the replacement of missing aspects of the human dentition (missing teeth).
Implants in the oral cavity (mouth) are one of the newer sciences in the restoration of the human dentition (teeth). Basically implants are devices, usually made out of a titanium alloy, that are placed into the supporting structures (jaw bone) of the teeth to be used as a foundation upon which an appliance is placed to replace missing dentition (teeth). The replacement appliance that is placed on the implant can range from a single replacement tooth (crown) to a complete set of teeth (complete denture). |
