A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions

Alloplastic

Alloplastic refers to man-made materials that are sometimes used for tissue augmentation. The dentist uses tissue augmentation to build up an area in the mouth for several reasons. One reason the dentist would augment a mandibular (lower) ridge is to help stabilize a lower denture.

Acid Etch
-
A procedure where a weak acid smeared on your teeth to ready your teeth for brackets. The acid etch helps your brackets stay on better.

A plastic used to false teeth, retainers, and other dental products. Dental acrylic has been tested and thought to be perfectly safe.

Anomaly

Appliance

An appliance is a device that performs a service or function

Arch Wire
-
A metal wire which is attached to your brackets to move your teeth.

Arch; dental
-
refers to the upper or lower intraoral part of the jaw

Archform
-
The shape of the dental arch.

Armamentarium
-
A general term for the dental chairs, lights and equipment used by your dentist or orthodontist.

Articulator
-
A special holder for models of your teeth

Aspiration
-
Removal of fluids from your mouth with an aspirator

Aspirator
-
A tube like a straw which the dentist puts in your mouth to suck up all the saliva.

Atom
-
An atom is one of the smaller building blocks of all things

Attrition
-
Attrition is the loss of tooth structure by mechanical forces from opposing teeth.

Augmentation
-
Augmentation means to build up

Autogenous
-
Autogenous taken from one part and placed in another part of the same object

Avulsion
-
Avulsion means the forcible removal of a body part by trauma or surgery
