A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions

Amalgam

An amalgam is a mixture or combination. An amalgam in dentistry is what the silver filings are called. This is because an amalgam is a mixture of many metals such as silver, copper, mercury, and other metals. The amalgam has been used in dentistry for many years but with the advent of newer and better materials, the old silver filling of yesteryear is rapidly being replaced with the newer tooth colored filling material; the composite.
