A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions

Cement

Cement is a mixture that holds things together. In dentistry there are basically two kinds of cement; 'permanent' and temporary. Although permanent means, according to court interpretation, lasting forever cements in dentistry are still referred to as 'permanent' and temporary. 'Permanent dental cement is use to place crowns and bridges on teeth so that they will stay in the mouth for a very long time. Temporary cements in dentistry are used to keep things in the mouth together for a few weeks, or until the dentist can place a more 'permanent' type appliance.
