A Complete Glossary of Dental Definitions

Tempromandibular Joint

The ‘TMJ’ is the functioning part of the oral dentition where the mandible (the lower jaw) hinges with the cranium (skull bone). The Tempromandibular joint is unique in the human body for several reasons but the main reason is that it has a right and left side component that must function in unison (together) with a certain degree of accuracy. If this joint doesn’t function with both sides in a uniform manner, the results can be devastating. Because of a tearing and/or stretching of the muscles and ligaments which make up the TMJ apparatus, symptoms of TMJ disorders have indirectly led to suicide. Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning TMJ can range from grinding and broken teeth to severe headaches, neckaches, and earaches, although the gambit of symptoms is wide ranging. Tinnitis, or a ringing in the ears, and even hearing loss has also been associated with a Tempromandibular joint dysfunction.
